Middle GradesPlacement Testfor students new tothe Saxon programThe ObjectiveThis test can be used to helpteachers find the best initialplacement for students who are newto the Saxon math program. This testincludes selected content from Math 54,Math 65, Math 76, Math 87, andAlgebra 1/2. Please note that this placementtest is not infallible. It is simply one indicatorthat teachers may use to place new students. The best placement for most new students is tostart the year in the textbook designed forstudents at that grade level (Math 54 for 4th,Math 65 for 5th, Math 76 for 6th, Math 87 for7th, and Algebra 1/2 for 8th). Students with gapsin their learning may be better served beginningone textbook level lower. Caution should beexercised in placing new students outside of thetitle indications of these books (e.g., Math 76 for6th and 7th grade students). However exceptionalstudents at either end of the spectrum can bewell served by these texts when they are placedat levels consistent with their competencies. This test is not intended for use with currentSaxon students. Those students who have usedthe Saxon mathematics program are best placedby the recommendation of their prior teachers. The Rules1. Allow the student to work untilhe/she cannot work any more problems.2. The student may not use acalculator during the test.3. The student should workindependently without coachingor other assistance.4. The student should show all ofhis/her work. Look over thestudent’s work carefully as you grade the test.5. Use the placement guide provided along withsound judgement to help you place the studentin the most appropriate book.Copyright 1999 by Saxon Publishers, Inc.The Score Four or fewer correct from Questions 1–10 andthe student is an average-to-accelerated fourthgrader: Student may begin Math 54.
