Vice Chancellor’s MessageIndia is endowed with 12 Major and 200 Non-Major Ports situatedalong its 7500 km long coastline and a vast network of navigable waterways.The maritime sector plays a crucial role in the overall trade and growth, with95% of the country’s trade volume and 65% of the trade value beingundertaken through sea transport. During the year 2020 the NITI Aayog ofIndia unveiled “Blue Economy” initiatives to harness the full potential ofMaritime / Ocean resources.Blue Economy offers a high potential for next phase of growth,resources and job creation but with commensurate challenges. The BlueEconomy policy advances a framework for participation of private sector andcoastal communities, enhancing the application of science-based tools toocean management, sustainable uses of oceans & coastal areas, and settingpriorities.Indian maritime sector plays a crucial role in the socio-economicgrowth. Globally, India ranks 2nd in ship recycling, 21st in ship building and5th in supplying trained manpower to this sector. Maritime India Vision 2030(MIV 2030), a blueprint for the coordinated and accelerated growth of Indianmaritime sector, has been formulated by the Ministry of Port, Shipping andWaterways, Government of India with an objective of propelling India to theforefront of global maritime sector in the next decade. MIV 2030 outlines ten2

key themes, ranging from development of world class port infrastructurewith well-co-ordinated multimodal transport chain to enhancement ofmaritime education, research and training, which are essential foroverhauling Indian maritime sector and place India in a global maritimeleadership position.These new prospects open up opportunities for young minds ofIndia - like never before in the recent past - in myriad sub-domains ofmaritime sector. 1.IntroductionThe Indian Maritime University (IMU) was established on 14th November2008 as a teaching-cum-affiliating university under the aegis of theMinistry of Shipping, Government of India, with Chennai as headquarters.It was set up to promote maritime studies, training, research and extensionwith focus on emerging areas like oceanography, maritime history,maritime laws, maritime security, search and rescue, transportation ofdangerous cargo, environmental studies and other related fields, and toachieve excellence in these areas.There were 7 renowned legacy teaching or research institutes under theMinistry of Shipping, and these were subsumed under the Indian MaritimeUniversity in November 2008. The institute Training Ship Chanakya whichwas situated in Navi Mumbai became Navi Mumbai Campus while the LalBahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies & Research and theMarine Engineering Research Institute became the Mumbai Port Campus ofIndian Maritime University. Similarly, Marine Engineering ResearchInstitute and Indian Institute of Port Management became the KolkataCampus of the University. The National Ship Design and Research Centrein Visakhapatnam and the National Maritime Academy in Chennai becamethe Visakhapatnam and Chennai Campuses respectively. Post-November2008, Kochi Campus was set up in 2009. The University also has 18Affiliated Institutes.IMU is the apex institution in the field of Maritime Education in India. Theuniversity’s significance can be viewed from the axial role it is playing byimparting best Maritime Education and tapping best talents for theMaritime sector.IMU conducts a Common Entrance Test (IMU-CET) every year onAll India basis for admissions to its courses for IMU campusesand Affiliated Institutes.5
