COURSE DESCRIPTIONThis course provides an introduction to computer concepts and anoverview of microcomputer applications including variations of Microsoft Windows (operating system),Microsoft Office (productivity suite),Microsoft Word (word processor; part of Office),Microsoft Excel (spreadsheet processor; part of Office),possibly Microsoft Access (database system; part of Office), andMicrosoft PowerPoint (presentation system; part of Office). We will use Microsoft Office 2016 for this course. The course iscompatible with Microsoft Windows 7Windows 8.1Windows 10Microsoft Office 365.The first few chapters of the text explain computers, operating systemsand use of the Internet. There are 4 major applications in the course: Word, Excel, Access, andPowerPoint.SOFTWAREPage3When you buy a PC Windows computer today for personal use, it willbe pre-installed with the Windows 10 operating system. However, many companies or industries today are using the older MicrosoftWindows 7 or 8.1. For information on Windows 10, see the book NewPerspectives Microsoft Windows 10 by Ruffolo, ISBN 139781305579402.3

Many commercial systems running on networks are using MicrosoftOffice 365. The text is designed to be compatible with Microsoft Office365. For information on Office 365, see the Appendix at the end ofthe first text. Office 365 is sold by subscription and is guaranteed toprovide the latest version of the Office programs (currently Office2016). Office 365 is a set of software and files that is managedautomatically by Microsoft in a cloud. The cloud is a group ofcomputers used by Microsoft that the individual user cannotmanipulate. The applications in Office 365 are upgraded automaticallyby Microsoft. While companies often subscribe to Office 365, you arelikely to use Office 2016 directly under Windows 10 at home. Youneed not obtain Office 365.Many computers in industry today use Microsoft Office 2013 or Office2016. The differences between these versions of Office are minimal, and you can use either Office 2013 or 2016 to do the Projects in thecourse, although Office 2016 is strongly preferred. Some features inOffice 2016 do not exist in Office 2013 (such as some colors andthemes). In the assignments, you may use a reasonable substitute inOffice 2013 for a feature that appears only in Office 2016.Together with the books used for Readings, you will use the SAM(Skills Assessment Manager) web-based system for Training,Projects and Exams. You will obtain a combination of thetextbooks and the SAM program. The tables below indicate thereadings assigned from the books and the dates thatassignments are available and due. Locate an Assignment usingthe Calendar Activity View or the Activity List View within SAM.Readings. These are Optional and Ungraded. Any part ofthe textbooks can be read at any time. We suggest that aModule of the book be read before the correspondingtraining, and that the steps discussed be done on acomputer as you are reading. Training. These are Optional, but can be used to receiveExtra Credit on your final exam grade, gain skills inMicrosoft applications, and prepare for exams. Once atraining assignment has been made available according tothe SAM calendar, it remains available through Wednesday,January 23. The following table shows the training dates foreach module.4Page 4There are 4 types of assignments, which you access via SAM:
