Non-Contact Position Sensing TechnologyBaker Hughes SVI II AP (Smart Valve Interface, Advanced Performance) is a 32 bit microprocessor digital valvepositioner with a local interface that controls a pneumatic actuator using a two-wire 4-20mA control signal. Theinstrument offers bi-directional communication using the HART protocol. Its universal design offers ease of retrofit inplace of existing analog positioners on Masoneilan or non-Masoneilan pneumatic actuators, either single-acting ordouble-acting.ControlDynamic PerformanceNon-Contact Position FeedbackAccuracyThe field-proven, non-contact sensor has nomechanical moving parts, resulting in a potentiallylong life-cycle and simplifying the mountingprocedure. The design is compliant up to SIL2per IEC61508.Designed to SurviveWith no moving parts, encapsulated electronics, stainless steel wetted components, positivelypressured compartments, and a metal housing, the field-proven Baker Hughes SVI II AP positioner iscapable of handling tough environments and resistingthe effects of vibration, temperature, and corrosion.2The high resolution non-contact sensor, capable ofmeasuring movements of 0.00015 percent, combinedwith the proven control algorithm, offers positioningperformance yielding extreme flow control.ResponsivenessThe two-stage pneumatic system has a largeflow capacity (Cv) for fast filling and purging ofthe actuator. This technology, combined with theadvanced positioning algorithm, offers fast andaccurate positioning to small or large setpointchanges in order to enhance process control.

Easy, Simple, AccurateUser FriendlinessVersatileSimplified MaintenanceOne Design Fits Many ApplicationsIncrease Safetyinventory cost to support the processing plant.Baker Hughes has configured the SVI II AP positionerwith modularity in mind to simplify the task of replacingcomponents. The circuit board, LCD, I/P, and pneumaticrelay can be replaced in minutes. The SVI II AP positioner is capable of remote access usingthe HART protocol or with the use of the MasoneilanVECTOR, a wireless HART adaptor. But in the case wherelocal intervention is necessary, the external explosionresistant display allows for calibration and diagnosingoperations without exposing wires to a potentiallyexplosive environment.Quick & Accurate CommissioningThe built-in auto-stop function accurately andrepetitively sets the zero and span of the control valvewhile the built-in auto-tuning function sets the valvepositioning parameters. The result is systematic andenhanced dynamic performance on any control valve.Local Display with PushbuttonsThe optional explosion-resistant display is a user friendlyinterface for SVI II AP positioner setup and calibrationand monitoring operations and alarms. The LCDassembly can be retrofitted in the field. The instrument is capable of handling linear and rotaryapplications, either valve mounted or remotely mounted. In addition, the product’s label encompasses explosionresistant and intrinsically safe applications with FM, CSA,ATEX, and IEC approvals. The net effect is a reduction inIntegratedBaker Hughes SVI II AP positioner supports eDDL, DTM,and system specific technology for integration with mostasset management software programs and controlsystems. Such integration offers ease of commissioningand equipment diagnosis before impacting processcontrol. As a result, the plant can be operational in lesstime with greater availability.Low VoltageThe patented loop-powered circuitry requires 9 Vdc at20 mA allowing compatibility with existing controllersand existing electrical barriers. Such low voltagerequirements allow the plant to improve its existinginfrastructure when migrating to digital valve positioners.Position TransmitterThe loop-powered position transmitter is built-in with theuse of solid state electronics without requiring externalaccessories or HART to analog converters.Discrete OutputsBaker Hughes SVI II AP positioner is equipped with twoconfigurable solid state switches capable of handling 24Vdc up to 1 A. These switches are low-maintenance andreduce the need for external accessories.3

Proven TechnologyHousingBaker Hughes SVI II AP positioner housing is offeredin aluminum or stainless steel. The aluminumversion is chromated and has less than 0.5 percentcopper content to resist harsh environments whilethe stainless steel version is made of solid 316Lmaterial for corrosive atmospheres. Furthermore, the electronic compartment is positivelypressured to reduce external moisture ingress andcondensation. The installation is accomplishedvia four external bolt holes. The design supportsmounting and dismantling without exposing thewiring compartment to the atmosphere.Magnetic Interference ProtectionThe housing has a built-in feature that protectsthe magnet array against debris. In addition, thisprotective feature shields the magnetic field fromelectromagnetic interferences.I/PLCD and PushbuttonsThe heavy-duty I/P with stainless steel wettedparts has a static coil surrounding the nozzle. Asit receives an electrical signal from the electroniccircuit, the static coil magnetizes the nozzleattracting the flapper towards the nozzle resulting ina pneumatic signal that actuates the relay. The I/P isbuilt with a flow regulator to sustain a steady outputagainst air supply disturbances. The optional cover with external LCD andpushbuttons is explosion resistant for accessibilityto the buttons in a hazardous area without the needfor a hot work permit. Sophisticated circuitry detectsthe mechanical activation of a button, providingprotection against false inputs.4

Pneumatic Volume Amplifieror RelayThe pneumatic relay consists of a floatingpoppet valve assembly that modulates using thepneumatic signal from the built-in I/P. The poppetvalve allows the incoming air supply to feed theactuator chamber or to vent the actuator chamberto the atmosphere. The large air flow passagesoffer fast response and operate against airbornecontaminants without possible Joules-Thomsoneffect (ice formation).Magnetic CouplingCircuit BoardThe position of the valve is sensed with the use oftwo rare earth (permanent) magnets diametricallyopposing each other. This type of magnet canmaintain its strength and keeps its magneticproperties for many decades. The orientation of thestrong magnetic field is detected through the wallof the housing by a Hall effect sensor located onthe circuit board. This technology combined witha protective feature for the magnetic field and themagnets on the housing offers accurate positioning. The electronic circuit of Baker Hughes SVI II APpositioner is encapsulated in a silicone-basedmaterial and covered with anti-fungal coatingto help survive in harsh environments. A series ofheavy-duty, spring-loaded connectors offer wiringtermination. Such military and aerospace connectortechnology resists the effects of cold flow (thermalcontraction and expansion of the wire), vibration, and corrosion, resulting in a sustainable electricalconnection.Pressure SensorsFive pressure sensors are built-in for online positioner and control valve diagnostics. These pressure sensors are factory calibrated and low-maintenance.5

DiagnosticsBaker Hughes SVI II AP positioner offers three types ofdiagnostics — continuous, offline, and online. The continuous diagnostics include self-monitoring ofSVI II AP positioner operation, number of valve cycles, anddistance traveled, hours of operation divided in threecategories (time closed, near closed, and open) and amultitude of valve performance-related alarms. The offline diagnostics allow for bench testing of thepositioner and the control valve using a variety of testsbuilt into the firmware and within ValVue software. Suchtests do override the incoming control signal and are tobe performed on the bench or with the valve bypassed.A useful test is the high resolution Extended ActuatorSignature because it quantifies the friction, the springinitial and final, and the seating profile. The online diagnostics are performed during normaloperation while the positioner is under control. Suchdiagnostics are non-intrusive for the operation of thecontrol valve and offer a wealth of information as to theperformance of the SVI II AP positioner and the controlvalve. The SVI II AP firmware continuously monitors keyperformance indicators and can provide alarms usingHART or the built-in solid-state switches. When combinedwith Valve Aware, the SVI II AP positioner offers a morecomprehensive set of key performance indicators (KPIs)during normal operation.Continuous Diagnostics Cycles (valve reversals) Positioner and valve alerts Travel (distance traveled) Hours of operation- Time closed- Time near closed- Time openOffline Diagnostics Single or multiple-step response (position vs. time) Positioner signature (position vs. command signal) Valve / Actuator signature (actuator pressure vs. travel)Online Diagnostics V alve position, input signal, supply pressure, actuator pressure, I/P pressure Pneumatic system performance Circuit board health Device temperature (actual, high, low) Valve performance—requires Valve Aware(online valve diagnostics) Friction (requires Valve Aware)Valve SignaturesONLINE Valve SignaturesWhen coupled with Valve Aware, valve performancemonitoring becomes possible while the process isrunning.
