Dear FamilyYour child is working on writing numbers in order. Usethe activities on pages 2–11 to help your child write numbers.Use the following numbers as a guide for how the numbersyour child writes should look.Here are some other daily activities to try with your child: Use dotted lines to write the numbers 0–9 on a sheetof paper. Tell your child that the lines are a railroad track andthe pencil is the train. Have your child try to keep the trainon the track while tracing each number. Leave blanks for missing numbers as you write thenumbers 0–9 in order on a sheet of paper. Have your childwrite the missing numbers. Use paint, markers, chalk, or crayons to makepracticing writing numbers more fun. You might also let yourchild write the numbers in shaving cream, sand, or pudding! Have your child make a number chart on a large pieceof paper. Have your child decorate the chart. Hang it in aplace where it can be seen (on the refrigerator door, or onyour child’s bedroom door). Make a set of number cards 0–9 out of index cards.Show your child a number, and have your child write thenumber that comes before and the number that comes afterthat number. Read books with your child about numbers. Activity 3I Am Thinking of . . .What You’ll Need: My Number Chart on page 13Use the number chart on page 13. Have your child readthe numbers as you point to them in order. Then pointto out-of-order numbers, and have your child readthose numbers.Next, tell your child that you are going to think of a numberand give them clues about it. Tell your child numbers thatcome before and after the number you are thinking of.For example, say, “I am thinking of a number that comesafter 4 but before 10.” Ask your child to guess whatnumber you are thinking of. Give clues until your childguesses the correct number.3

Activity 4Dot-to-Dot Under the SeaOn page 5, have your child put a pencil on the dotnext to the number 1 and draw a line from that dotto the dot next to the number 2. Have your childmove from dot-to-dot in numerical order, tocomplete the picture. Count aloud together from1–20 as your child completes the picture. Haveyour child color the picture when finishedconnecting the dots.4

Activity 6Let’s Write Numbers 0–9On page 9, have your child trace the first numberseveral times. Make sure that your child is tracingin the correct direction. After your child can tracethe number, ask your child to copy the numberon the blank lines.Then have your child practice writing the numbersfrom memory on lined paper.8
