Welcome to AOCMFAOCMF is a multispecialty community, established in 1974, consisting of a worldwidenetwork of clinicians from the fields of oral and maxillofacial surgery, plastic surgery,ENT, head and neck surgery, ophthalmology, and neurosurgery. Our key activities at a glanceAlongside its strong focus on education, AOCMF key activities lie in the areas of community development, research and development, and the TK (Technical Commission) system.CommunityEducationResearch & DevelopmentInnovationsThe history of AOCMFPrior to 1958, there was no systematic investigation of the biology of bone healing or fracture repair, and knowledge in the field was sparse. Meanwhile, casting was the mainstay in fracture treatment, andserious long-bone fractures routinely resulted in permanent disability.1959198420122016A research laboratory isopened in Davos, Switzerland, and the AO Principles areestablished with the missionto transform surgery andchange lives. The first CMF course is held outside of Davos, on Amelia Island, Florida (US).Plate fixation is taught for mandible and lateral midface fractures, and the course hostsfaculty members from all specialties: plastic, ENT, and oral surgery, which proves tobe a novel sensation. The specialties did not work together up until this time. The manual “Principles ofInternal Fixation of theCraniomaxillofacial skeleton”is published and fast becomesa must have staple on thebookshelf of every CMF surgeon. The AOCMF Facebook page getsover 2000 likes within the first 2 months.Fellowships are established in Basel, Switzerland, for surgeons from around the worldlonging for first-class surgical training. The open access journal CMTR Openis launched.Small plates and screws are designed and developed for midface factures.19581974A group of surgeonsform to study bone healingin Biel, Switzerland.A first course, Fractures ofthe Mandible, is organized in Davos,Switzerland, under the leadershipof Professor Bernd Spiessl andProfessor Joachim Prein.19862013Professor Spiessl publishesa book on Mandible fractures.A Classification systemto the fractures ofthe skull is introduced.Joachim Prein teaches CMF and stablefixation in Latin America and Asia.1987Today, AOCMF providesmore than 50 prominentfellowships each year.AOCMF offers 130 courseseach year around the globeto over 7000 surgeons.A Classification system concerningmandible fractures is introduced.1990s1960The course programexpands and becomesmore comprehensive.First AO courseis held in Davos.22017197419841990s2008CMF is recognized by AO surgeons to bea specialty area. At this time, AOCMF is not a clinicaldivision, but an AOTrauma supported initiative. The AO Foundation is establishedas an official organization.AOCMF distinguishes itselfas a separate clinical divisionwithin the AO Foundation.AOCMF is officially establishedas a clinical division of the AO.

Community & MembershipThe universal spirit of the AOCMF community transcends borders and specialties, benefiting both patients and healthcare providers across the globe. The AOCMF member community enjoys a broad recognition, with over 3,000 members coming together asan active forum that: O ffers access to a dynamic global network of experts and peers who share common interests andenthusiasm in the field of CMF trauma, orthoganthics and reconstruction. CurriculaA framework for educational planningAOCMF’s high quality approach to educational offerings contributes significantly tothe AO’s goal of improving patient care. In order to achieve the highest quality, andto have the greatest educational impact, AOCMF is in the process of designing andimplementing curricula to ensure we deliver competency-based educational activities.AOCMF education applies a structured planning processto developing curricula.Curriculum Development EducationTaskforce (CDET)The CDET is responsible for developing a new curriculum, which means building new competency based course contentfor a specific target audience. The CDET consists of fourinternational program editors, AOCMF surgeons from aroundthe world mandated by the AOCMF international board. Thechairperson of each AOCMF region acts as a regional programcontributor and subsequently reviews the CDET’s work toensure the curriculum can also be implemented in their region.Curriculum ImplementationAfter approval by the AOCMF international board, all resourcesrequired to implement the new program have to be definedor developed. Course and faculty support material are essentialfor launching the new curriculum. This may include: A specific course package for faculty and organizer with:implementation guide for course chairs, program templates, list of practical exercises, case library to run small groupdiscussions, standardized lecture on the AO’s History, AOCMFand AOCMF membership, faculty guides and checklists. Learning resources for participants: AO Surgery Reference, prerecorded webinars, webcasts, online videos, booksand book chapters.Specific faculty training programs can support a smoothimplementation of the new curriculum. All parties involvedin the organization of an educational event have to beinformed and briefed, as their work may also be impactedby the new curriculum. How is a new standardized program for aneducational event developed?1 atient problems and a target audience arePidentified, and the competencies developed.2L earning objectives are defined, appropriateto the intended level of outcomes.3 ppropriate educational methodsA(lectures, case discussions, practical exercises)are defined.4 Modules are built and timings proposed.5T he newly established program and supportdocuments are finalized by the internationalprogram editors for review and feedback.6T he CDET reviews existing resources andmakes a recommendation for new educationalresources (e.g. a new teaching video).7T he AOCMF international board approvesthe new program and decides on neweducational resources.8The new curriculum is piloted and thenimplemented in all regions.7

InnovationsWe are always looking ahead, spotting new and evolving medical technologies before theybecome common practice. How can tomorrow’s technologies help us to improve patientcare today? This question guides our approach in all innovation initiatives we engage in.Virtual surgical simulation —a visionof the AOApps for cognitive teaching— learningby doingHigh-tech simulation tools that are used to trainpilots and ensure appropriate knowledge and skillsto be truly safe, are now driving innovation insurgery and medical education.New technological advances offer learning outside ofthe traditional setting. Following the surgical mantra“the decision comes before the incision” AOCMF hasparticipated in the development of an app that takescognitive teaching of surgical skills to the next level. This surgery simulation app, called “Touch Surgery”,enables users to practice surgery anytime, anywhere. In the app’s training mode, surgeons can learnoperations in a step-by-step manner with 3D graphicssimulating realistic surgical environments. In testmode, users can track their results and measure theirprogress, which can also be shared with classmatesand work colleagues.AOCMF has taken a lead in assessing virtual surgicalsimulation as a means of helping junior surgeonsto learn complex medical procedures before theyundertake them on real life patients. AOCMF iscollaboratively developing cognitive and high-fidelitysurgical planning and simulator technologies. The focus lies on Multipurpose virtual reality simulationsfor training Metrics development (wizard) Transferring simulations to various platformsINSIGHTS CMF—a new way of gettingcustomized informationSince its launch in September 2015, INSIGHTS CMF has fast become the go-to medicalknowledge platform for CMF surgeons.
