IntroductionTracer VV550 and Tracer VV551 variableair volume (VAV) controllers providesingle-duct digital control for VAV boxes. They support the following VAV controlsequences: Space temperature control Flow tracking Ventilation flow controlThe Tracer VV550 VAV controller isavailable factory-installed on TraneVariTrane VAV boxes (Figure 1). TheTracer VV551 VAV controller is availablefor field installation for a variety of VAVapplications (Figure 2).Figure 1. Tracer VV550 controllerBecause the Tracer VV550 and TracerVV551 VAV controllers use the samelogic controller, both offer the samewide range of application and controlflexibility. The Tracer VV551 VAVcontroller includes additional laborsaving packaging features for fieldinstalled applications.Tracer VV550/551 VAV controllers canoperate as part of a Trane IntegratedComfort system (ICS), as part of abuilding management system fromanother manufacturer, or as astandalone device. When it is part of a Trane ICS, a TracerVV550/551 VAV controller enables thebuilding automation system (BAS) toperform functions such as scheduling, trending, alarming, remotecommunications, and VAV air system(VAS) coordination. The controllercommunicates with a Tracer SummitBAS over the LonTalk communicationslink. The controller can alsocommunicate with other building controlsystems that are compliant with theLonMark Space Comfort Controller(SCC) profile.Tracer VV550/551 VAV controllers can beconfigured using the Rover servicetool. They have the following inputs andoutputs (Figure 3 on page 6):Figure 2. Features and benefitsAutomatic calibrationTracer VV550/551 VAV controllersautomatically calibrate the flowtransducer each time the box transitionsto the unoccupied state. This eliminatesthe need to initiate/schedule calibrationfor most installations. The exception is24/7 sites, in which case the TracerSummit building automation system canbe used to initiate/schedule calibration.Ventilation flexibilityTracer VV550/551 VAV controllers canmanage ventilation in the followingways: Fixed occupancy ventilation setpoint Scheduled (or otherwise calculated)ventilation setpoint Occupancy sensor to switch betweennormal and reduced ventilation CO2 sensor for demand-controlledventilationThis flexibility gives owners and facilitymanagers an option to simply select oneof several effective solutions formanaging ventilation.Flow trackingTracer VV550/551 VAV controllers caneasily be applied in flow trackingapplications. In a flow trackingapplication, supply and exhaust boxesare paired together for the purpose ofmaintaining either positive or negativespace static pressure. This featureallows the installer to quickly define therelationship of the supply and exhaustair boxes without the need for customprogramming.Ventilation flow controlwith temperingTracer VV550/551 VAV controllers havebeen designed for ventilation flowcontrol applications. These applicationspair a fresh air unit or self-contained unitwith ventilation boxes to provide fresh(tempered) air to a floor/area. With thisfeature, the installer can quicklyconfigure the flow control boxes and setup the system without the need forcustom programming.4Local versus remote reheatflexibilityTracer VV550/551 VAV controllers can beconfigured to have local and/or remoteheat. This configuration flexibilityenables the controllers to be appliedacross a broad range of VAVapplications.Occupied and unoccupiedoperationThe occupancy input on a Tracer VV550/551 VAV controller works with a motion(occupancy) sensor or a time clock todetermine the occupancy mode. Anoccupancy request can also becommunicated from a buildingautomation system to determine themode of the controller. Whether standalone or combined with acommunicated occupancy request, aTracer VV550/551 controller can be usedwith an occupancy sensor to saveenergy whenever a space is vacant.Timed overrideThe timed override function for afterhours operation allows users to requestunit operation by the touch of a buttonon the unit zone sensor. Additionally, users can press the CANCEL button atany time to place the unit back intounoccupied mode. This occupancyfeature minimizes energy use by runningthe system only as scheduled or asdemanded after hours.Service pin from the Tranezone sensorCertain installation scenarios requireaccess to the SERVICE button on thecontroller. Access to this button typicallyrequires a ladder or a lift. The TracerVV550/551 VAV controller allows atechnician to replicate pressing theSERVICE button by pressing the zonesensor ON button. This featureeliminates the need for accessing theSERVICE button, saving the techniciantime and energy.CNT-PRC003-EN, 09 Aug 2010

Auto-commissioningsequenceTrane controllercompatibilityTracer VV550/551 VAV controllersprovide an automatic commissioningsequence. With a discharge airtemperature sensor installed, thisfeature exercises the air valve, fan, andheat in the box and records thedischarge air temperature before andafter the action. This allows the installerto easily checkout the operation of thebox and commission by exception. Thedata from this test is retained in thecontroller for immediate reports orretrieval at a later date (for comparisonpurposes).Tracer VV550/551 VAV controllers arecompatible with the latest generation ofTrane control products. The controllerscommunicate over a LonTalk communications link. This allows TracerVV550/551 VAV controllers to exist onthe same communication wire as otherTrane controllers and to share data withthem as required.Manual test functionA Tracer VV550/551 VAV controllerincludes a manual test button, whichenables a technician to easily exercisethe outputs of the controller. Onconsecutive button presses, thecontroller steps through a predefinedsequence that exercises all of thecontroller outputs.InteroperabilityTracer VV550/551 VAV controllers aredesigned with LonWorks technologyand are LonMark certified. They followthe guidelines of the LonMark SpaceComfort Controller (SCC) profile. Assuch, the Tracer VV550/551 controllersenable control system integrationflexibility.Wiring diagramSee Figure 3 on page 6.Wiring diagram 2Drive minimum andmaximum from zone sensorWhen applied with a Trane zone sensormodule that includes a thumbwheelsetpoint, a Tracer VAV VV550/551controller can easily be overridden tominimum and maximum flow. By simplyturning the thumbwheel to , thecontroller drives the air valve to theminimum cooling flow setpoint.Similarly, turning the thumbwheel to drives the air valve to the maximumcooling flow setpoint. This simpleoverride feature is most useful duringthe checkout and balancing phases of aproject.CNT-PRC003-EN, 09 Aug 20105
