introductionWho is Sunrise 10 for?Sunrise is specifically written to meet the needs ofsecondary classes in Kurdistan. The material: Is clear and easy to follow. Is motivating and enjoyable. Has clear aims and provides regular revision andtesting. Contains projects to encourage students to worktogether. Is culturally appropriate for Kurdish teenagers andcontains relevant social, cultural and historicalinformation. Can be used for mixed ability teaching. TheTeacher’s Book provides optional activities to helpthe teacher adapt to different teaching situationsand the Activity Book provides extra practicewhere needed.Sunrise 10 consolidates and extends work done inearlier grades, now that students have reached thestart of the senior secondary stage. It brings togetherlanguage that was taught separately in earlier gradesand develops it to a higher level of complexity andcontrast. Vocabulary is also consolidated and extendedwith the the use of new techniques of acquisition andorganisation. Building on these linguistic elements, students’ listening, speaking, reading and writingskills are also now greatly boosted. What are the components of Sunrise 10? Student’s Book Activity Book Teacher’s Book CDStudent’s BookThe Student’s Book begins with a welcome unit tohelp students find their way around their new books, get to know each other and also rapidly revise basiclanguage met at earlier levels. Use these activities asyou think best. You may think that some activities arenot necessary for your students, while others are. Pickand choose the exercises you think your students willneed. Some groups will have to do all the activities, while other schools may decide to drop the welcomeunit entirely.Following the welcome unit, there are ten units inthe book. There are seven main teaching units: Units1, 2 and 3, Units 5 and 6, and Units 8 and 9. Theseunits are based on topics which are interesting, important and useful for the students, such as healthy49780230727540.Text.indd 4living, sports, emergencies, etc. Units 4, 7 and 10are revision units which focus on the grammar andvocabulary items of the previous units. The continuing storyline concerns a Canadian boy,Ben, who is travelling to visit his father who worksin Dohuk, and Haval, a Kurdish-American boy, whois travelling to meet his aunt, uncle and cousins inSilemani. Ben and Haval become friends on thejourney and Ben later goes to visit Haval in Silemani. The revision units describe episodes of their visit toKurdistan. Other units sometimes touch on thesecharacters’ lives, but generally deal with topics ofwider interest to students. The core of every main teaching unit consists of sixlessons. Each double page contains two lessons. Asfar as possible, there is a page per lesson, and eachlesson is complete in itself. After Lesson 6, there is atwo-page Language Focus section, followed by a twopage episode of the Literary Reader.Lessons 1 and 2 introduce some of the main grammarand vocabulary of the unit mainly through listeningand speaking activities. These lessons also bringtogether and add to the known vocabulary toassemble useful word fields.Lessons 3 and 4 introduce further grammar andvocabulary in a longer piece of reading. Vocabularyis systemically developed through the Activity Bookby introducing word groupings through grammaticaland semantic relationships.Lessons 5 and 6 recycle the grammar and vocabularyof the first four lessons in the process of developinglistening, speaking and writing skills. The poems inUnits 3 and 9 add a literary dimension to the skillswork. These lessons always end with the Unit Task,a written or spoken transfer task that is personalisedwherever possible. The Language Focus sections summarise the maingrammar points and lists the unit vocabulary. TheTo Help You Study section gives students usefultechniques for improving their learning. (See below:What’s new in Sunrise 10?)The Literary Reader (Around the World in EightyDays by Jules Verne) is intended to increase students’reading skills and introduce them to the habit ofextensive reading for pleasure. (See below: What’snew in Sunrise 10?) Revision Units 4, 7 and 10 focuson the grammar and vocabulary items of the previousunits and include an episode of the Literary Reader.Introduction25/6/09 14:42:59

Activity BookNormally, a double page of lessons in the Student’sBook is supported by two pages of grammar andvocabulary exercises in the Activity Book. They aredesigned to be suitable for use for homework in almostall cases. But it is for you, the teacher, to decidewhether to use it like this or to work with some of itin class. If you set material for homework, you shouldallow some time for preparation and for regularfeedback. You may want to use marks given for thiswork as part of your ongoing assessment of students.Lessons 5 and 6 in the main teaching units aredifferent. They support the Student’s Book skillswork, and students move between the two booksto complete many of the tasks. These Activity Bookpages will therefore be used largely in class. At theend of the Activity Book there are recommendedactivities to go with the Literary Reader. You shoulduse some or all of this material to help your studentsget the greatest benefit from the Reader.Teacher’s BookThe Teacher’s Book contains brief, easy-to-followlesson plans for every lesson in Sunrise 10. It also givesyou ideas for starting your lessons and suggestions forextension work and alternative activities. It containsthe answers for every activity in the Student’s Book,as well as the Activity Book answers, a Grammarsummary and a Word list. The Teacher’s Book alsocontains the CD script for every listening activity. The lessons in the Student’s Book are designed to betaught as they stand. All you need is the Student’s Book, the CD and the Activity Book. If you look at the lessonnotes before you begin a class you should be able totailor your lessons to suit your particular class. The CDThe CD contains all the recorded listening materialsand pronunciation activities. What’s new in Sunrise 10?1 The Language Focus pagesThis part of the Student’s Book summarises the maingrammar points and vocabulary of the unit. Thismaterial is not strictly for the classroom, but you cantake advantage of it during the unit or as a separaterevision of the main parts of the unit together withthe practice exercises in the Activity Book.Language Focus provides detailed grammar notesand covers areas of grammar comprehensively andcontrastively. The vocabulary list includes phoneticIntroduction9780230727540.Text.indd 5transcriptions to help with pronunciation. (Thephonetic transcriptions should not be used to teachphonetics to the students) Note that the ActivityBook contains extra language practice activities forstudents to do at home. The To Help You Study section gives students usefultips on how to improve their learning, as well asvarious methods to help them acquire and organisenew vocabulary on the road to learner independence.2 The Literary ReaderThe Literary Reader is an adaptation of Jules Verne’sAround the World in Eighty Days (you can find moreinformation about it on page 111 of the Student’sBook). The reader is intended to increase students’extensive reading skills and introduce them to thehabit of reading for pleasure. There are recommendedactivities at the end of the Activity Book (pp72–79),which students can use independently or as partof class work. These activities regularly encouragestudents to work out meanings from context, and inthis way to increase learner independence. Do not usethis text to teach vocabulary and grammar.3 The Did You Know? notesStudents are familiar with this feature from previouslevels of Sunrise. It provides factual information tohelp increase students’ general knowledge. In Sunrise 10 the information is related to theLiterary Reader and it can be found after the episodeof the story in each unit. The aim of this part ofthe book is not to teach grammar or vocabulary, but to encourage students to learn about the worldaround them. It also gives students an opportunity toresearch and find out more if they are interested.4 The www.school.org project pagesThis is a series of projects – one for each teaching unit– which goes through the course and helps studentsuse the language and vocabulary of each main unit ina meaningful way. They are optional materials, relatedto the topic covered in the unit, that can be used afterthe relevant teaching unit or at any time later in theyear as a means of revision and practice. It would be a good idea to contact the IT teacher ofyour class and get him or her to help set up the group’swebsite. If your school does not have a website yet, trytalking to the headmaster of the school and get his/hersupport for the project. Explain to him/her that itwould be very useful for the school and the students tobe able to communicate with other students both inand beyond Kurdistan. You can also ask your studentsif they have computers and internet access at home,so that the information on the website can go ‘live’.525/6/09 14:42:59

5 The Reference SectionEarlier levels provide a grammar summary, apronunciation guide and a unit-by-unit word list, butSunrise 10 goes much further. First, students see the grammar in ‘action’ and then get theexplanation of the formation rules and usage. Asstudents’ level of English at this stage might vary, theLanguage Focus section helps stronger students tolearn ahead and weaker students to reinforce theirunderstanding of the grammar. Grammar is regularlyrecycled, the reading and listening passages are verycarefully written to keep students exposed to grammarthey learnt in earlier units and levels of Sunrise.69780230727540.Text.indd 6How is vocabulary taught in Sunrise 10?There is strong emphasis on the active (productive)vocabulary – words and phrases we want students tolearn. There is a unit wordlist in the Language Focussection. Vocabulary is regularly practised, revised andrecycled in the Activity Book, the revision units, andthe Language Focus sections.Functional English is also a key element in the book. This is language that will help students when usingEnglish in everyday situations. It is frequently pickedout from Student’s Book dialogues and practised inthe Activity Book. There is some extra lexis in the book – in the twopoems, the Literary Reader and occasionally in theDid You Know? notes – which students do not needto learn and should not be tested on. Students areoften able to understand these words in context forthemselves. However, necessary support for thepoems is specified in the Teacher’s Book and supportfor the reader is offered in the Activity book. The To Help You Study sections suggest a number ofways students may generally increase their vocabularyand learn words more easily. What about phonetic transcription in Sunrise 10?The phonetic symbols are introduced in thevocabulary lists and To Help You Study sections andthere is a phonetic alphabet in the Student’s Book. Bythis stage, students should be able to use a dictionaryindependently, and learning how to pronounce thewords in the dictionary is a great help in becoming anautonomous learner. What about reading aloud in Sunrise 10?There are some conversations and dialogues wewould like students to practise saying aloud. Theseaim at practising pronunciation and intonation. Asthe reading passages in Lesson 3 are usually quitelong, we suggest that these texts are used only forinformation and not for reading aloud. How long does it take to cover a unit in Sunrise 10?This, of course, depends on the level of the studentsand a lot of other factors. We generally suggest thatyou spend about the following amount of time: Lessons 1 and 2 in the Student’s Book requiretwo contact hours, although some homeworktime will also be needed to complete the ActivityBook tasks. Lessons 3 and 4 in the Student’s Bookalso require two contact hours, although somehomework time will also be needed to completethe Activity Book tasks. Lessons 5 and 6 integrate the Activity Book for thewriting skills tasks and can be completed in twocontact hours (depending on how much time youspend on the Unit Task), although some homeworktime will also be needed to complete the ActivityBook tasks.Introduction25/6/09 14:42:59

The Language Focus pages in the Student’s Book arefor reference during the unit, while the activitiesin the Activity Book can be used as homework orin-class progress assessment, and they take aboutone hour to complete. The Language Focusexercises can be used for assessment of students’progress. Let them work on these at home, or ifthey do them in class, let them work in pairs andsmall groups. You can turn these activities intocompetitions to keep students more motivated. The project activities should be done mostlyindependently or in groups out of class, but youwill need to spend about one hour setting up andgetting feedback on every stage of the project. The Literary Reader can also be done in manyways. If you do it after the end of the lesson, it willneed about one contact hour.So if you do everything in the Student’s Book andspend time assigning and checking the Activity Bookwork, you will spend approximately ten contact hourson every main teaching unit. What Activity Book material do I cover in class inSunrise 10?The Activity Book material can be done mainly ashomework, as it would be very time consuming to do inclass. Try to look at the Activity Book exercises beforeeach lesson, and if you think some of the activities areespecially relevant, important or interesting, you canspend a little time doing them in class. But, as a rule, wesuggest that you do not spend more than 15 minutesa lesson working on Activity Book tasks. If you assignActivity Book exercises for homework, allow sometime to check them in the
