Product Data Sheet00813-0100-4119, Rev BAMay 2012Rosemount AIS SensorsINTRODUCTIONMultipoint Temperature Profiling Sensors measurethe temperature at different points along its length. These sensors are frequently used in chemical andpetrochemical industries because they provide anexcellent temperature profile for chemical reactors, catalytic crackers and fractionation towers. For theseapplications, Multipoint Temperature ProfilingSensors are the most efficient cost, maintenance anddata acquisition solution. Multipoint TemperatureProfiling Sensors allow, with a single pipepenetration, the reading of up to 60 points that canbe evaluated to provide a complete temperatureprofile of the column, tank or reactor.TYPICAL APPLICATIONSReactorsMultipoint Temperature Profiling Sensors improvemonitoring and control of the reaction process withinchemical reactors. A prime example of howMultipoint Temperature Profiling Sensors are used isin the production of organic acid. Many organic acidsare produced through an exothermic oxidationprocess. This chemical reaction takes place inmultiple tubes filled with catalysts. The reactioncomponents flow into the tubes, form reactions dueto the catalyst, then flow out as an acid. These tubesare cooled by running a coolant around the tubes. Acritical process parameter is the control of theoperating temperature. A Multipoint TemperatureProfiling Sensor can measure the temperature profileinside a reaction tube. Through monitoring thetemperature profile, the flow of reaction componentsand coolant can be controlled to maximize theprocess output and reaction efficiency. A high localresolution of the temperature profile is required toensure that the hot-spot (maximum measuredtemperature) does not reach the maximum allowableprocess temperature.Figure 1. Reactor3

Product Data SheetRosemount AIS SensorsDistillation Columns/FractionatorsIn crude oil distillation processes, crude oil is heatedand run into a distillation column or fractionators, where a significant temperature gradient is observed- high temperatures at the bottom, cooler at the top.Inside the column, crude oil is separated intocomponents or fractions according to weight andboiling point. As these component vapors travel up,they condense to liquid form. These condensedcomponents are captured by strategically mountedtrays or “decks,” located at a height where thecolumn temperature matches a specific component’scondensation point. The tray locations, or cut-points,are where products are then drawn from the column.Multipoint Temperature Profiling Sensors can beused to monitor the temperature at these cut-pointsand therefore control the temperature profile of thedistillation column.400813-0100-4119, Rev BAMay 2012Figure 2. .Distillation Column/Fractionator

Product Data Sheet00813-0100-4119, Rev BAMay 2012Rosemount AIS SensorsRosemount 1080F Thermocouple Multipoint Sensor –Contacting Fixture DesignThe Rosemount 1080F Multipoint Sensor is versatile, robust, and designed for exceptional reliability with along life expectancy. The individual measurementelements are ungrounded single thermocouples andthe number of measurement points is limited to 20.These sensors are to be used for measurement oftemperature profiles where a high local resolution isnot required. The Rosemount 1080F can be orderedwith or without a thermowell and is available in threedifferent sensor configurations: Individual GuideTube design, Radial Spring design, and LaminatedSpring design.Individual Guide Tube DesignThe individual guide tube design offers theadvantage of replaceable individual elements(see Figure 5). Mineral insulated thermocoupleelements are inserted into each guide tube andguided to the specified measurement point. Whenordered with spring loaded fittings, good thermalcontact (fast response time) is achieved, but theinside of the thermowell is not sealed from theatmosphere. When ordered with compressionfittings, the thermowell is sealed from theatmosphere but the thermal contact isn’t as good. The guide tube design, with or without a thermowell, cannot be coiled– which should be considered whenshipping.Laminated Spring DesignThis design provides good thermal contact betweenthe thermocouple and the thermowell, facilitating afast-time response. The laminated spring presses thethermocouple against the inner wall of thethermowell (see Figure 5) and is appropriate if themounting flange is angled to the thermowell. Theadvantage of this design is the flexibility of the insert, which is similar to the flexibility of an oil dipstick. Thisdesign allows the sensor to follow the contour of thethermowell. If the laminated spring multipoint sensoris ordered without thermowell, it will be shipped as acoil. The individual thermocouples cannot bereplaced.ThermowellEvery Rosemount 1080F requires a thermowell foroperation. When the Rosemount 1080F is orderedwithout thermowell, check the inner diameter of theexisting thermowell (see Table 5). The inner wall ofthe thermowell must be smooth, especially at thewelding joints, to insure that the multipoint sensor willnot be damaged during insertion.Radial Spring DesignThis design provides good thermal contact betweenthe thermocouple and thermowell. In this design, aradial spring presses the thermocouple against theinner wall of the thermowell. The flattened MI cablehas full thermal contact with the thermowell. Thisdesign ensures the best possible response time. Ifordered without a thermowell, it will be shipped as acoil. The individual thermocouples cannotbe replaced.11

Product Data Sheet00813-0100-4119, Rev BAMay 2012Rosemount AIS SensorsRosemount 1082R RTD Multipoint Sensor–Contacting Fixture DesignThe Rosemount 1082R Multipoint Sensor is a robustsensor with a long life expectancy. The individualmeasurement elements are resistance elements. The standard is a 4-wire RTD. The number ofmeasurement points is restricted to 12. TheRosemount 1082R is used when a high localresolution is not required. These multipoint sensorscan be ordered with or without thermowells. The Rosemount 1082R is the best solution whendata acquisition equipment requires an RTD outputsignal. However, a thermocouple multipoint sensor(such as the Rosemount 1080F) may be the optimalsolution if transmitters are used (higher temperaturerange, more measurement points, same output). TheRosemount 1082R offers two different elementfixation methods: the Radial Spring design and theSpacer Design.SPECIFICATIONSFunctionalNumber of Measurement Points2 to 12Temperature Limits-40 to 450 C (-40 to 842 F)PhysicalPhysical DimensionsTable 8. A radial springpresses the RTD element against the inner wall ofthe thermowell ensuring the best possible responsetime (see Figure 6). If ordered without a thermowell,it will be shipped as a coil. The individual RTDelements cannot be replaced.Spacer Design:This design (see Figure 6) uses spacer disks toguide the resistance elements into position. Theindividual RTD elements are not replaceable. Forshipping purposes, the spacer design, with or withouta thermowell, cannot be coiled.ThermowellEvery Rosemount 1082R requires a thermowell foroperation. Accuracy in Accordance to DIN EN 60751ClassAB“t” is the temperature in C. (0.15K 0.0020* t ) (0.30K 0.0050* t )EnclosuresThe enclosures are described in “Enclosures with mountinghardware” on page 27.Individual Sensor Identification DataBy default, sensor 1 is closest to the flange. Remaining points arenumbered incrementally. Use the C1 option and the CDS if adifferent numbering system is desired.18

— The Medusa Thermocouple multipoint; multiple free-hanging sensors from a single process connection can be routed to exactly where they are needed within the vessel. — The Medusa RTD multipoint; is the same principle as the thermocouple design but usin

The previous equations define the RTD resistance as a function of its temperature, R. RTD (t). However, to implement an RTD sensor interfacing circuit, the RTD temperature must be deter-mined, instead, as a function of its resistance, T. RTD (r). This may be less straightforward, given the

The RTD Series Precision RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector) Simulator provides a very broad-range of absolute resistance values that replace RTD’s,thermocouples. Thermocouples present a re-sistance that depends on the temperature. The RTD simulator effectively replaces an RTD to test, analy
