VRV 25 YearsSHAPING THE AIR TO YOUR NEEDVRV air conditioning, pioneered by Daikin Industries in Japanin 1982, was introduced to Europe by Daikin Europe in 1987.Already widely known in Japan for some 5 years, the systemnevertheless, revolutionised European air conditioning andrapidly achieved a position of dominance within the industry.Since then, Daikin has developed the VRV ’s operationalscope and performance to a point where it is now recognised throughout the industry as the ‘benchmark’ in commercialair conditioning. The first great leap forward in system development cameKeeps temperature stablein 1990 when Daikin incorporated inverter control intoSmallertemperaturedifference its heat pump VRV , the advent of inverter capacity controlincreasing system flexibility and efficiency ‘at a stroke’ byLarge temperaturedifferenceenabling compressor output to be modulated to match thecooling or heating demand of the conditioned space.Start-up time reducedby about 1/3Set pointNon inverter ACatsRepeA further development came in 1991 with the introductionof the first heat recovery VRV , extended the following yearndhot acoldscycleInverter ACby the Hi-VRV system, which also incorporated fresh airsupply and computerised system management.Air ConditioningIn the late ‘90s, the need to phase out HCFC refrigerantR-22 refrigerant began to concern the market and afterconsiderable research and component redesign, Daikin introduced its fully optimised, HFC R-407C system, a heatHRVrecovery model appearing in 2001. Perceived by DaikinDAIKINNETWORKSOLUTIONVentilationControl & Managementsolely as an interim solution to the refrigerant problem, theR-407C VRV nevertheless, represented a valuable mediumterm step towards an eventual move away from HCFCs.Commercial air conditioning technology advanced yet againin 2003 with the introduction of VRV II – the world’s firstHFC R-410A operated system of this type. Available in bothheat pump and heat recovery formats and loaded with newfeatures, VRV II represented a considerable advance overearlier systems126

In 2004, the mini VRV III-S was launched. Operating onsingle-phase electricity supply, the system quickly becamea firm favourite for application to smaller commercial andlarge residential apartment projects.Until 2005, all VRV systems had been air-cooled but theStacked configuration ispossible.Ceiling height3,200mmor higherintroduction of the water-cooled VRV -WII extended theVRV ’s application potential by leaps and bounds. Designedfor use in new and existing high rise commercial buildingsor projects lacking roof or external space for outdoor units,Floor level100300mmthe system is also ideal for use where over stringent noiseregulations apply.Even the advent of the water-cooled version however, does not bring the story up to date. At the end of 2006,Daikin introduced the third generation VRV III. Availablein heat pump, cooling only and heat recovery variants, thesystem incorporates all the best features of VRV II plus anumber of innovative design, installation and maintenancerefinements.Further developments in 2007 and 2008 saw the introductionof a special ‘high ambient’ VRV for use in Middle Eastmarkets and also a ‘cold region’ VRV designed to suit thecolder climates of Northern Europe.Clearly, the latest advanced VRV system has come far sinceits early days and can now rightfully claim to be the mostenergy efficient, economic to run, user friendly, reliable andflexible air conditioning system of its type on the markettoday.127

REYQ8-48P8Y1BVRV III Heat RecoveryzzzzzzzzzzzzIts operation range for example 8hp to 48hp in2hp increment steps (21 system combinations), iswider than any of its contemporaries. Its ability to run no less than 64 indoor unitsin heat recovery format cannot at present bematched by other comparable systems.Increased EER/COPContinuous heating (resulting in a higherintegrated heating capacity).Easy installation thanks to automatic refrigerantcharging operation, automatic test operationIncreased piping flexibility: maximum piping length:165m, increased total piping length: 1,000mThe ability to control each conditioned zonekeeps VRV III system running costs to an absoluteminimum.Only those areas calling for air conditioning needto be cooled or heated and the system can beshut down completely in unoccupied rooms.Quick cool/heat change over.Improved refrigerant containment checkExtra low noise during night time operation (step1: 50 dBA; step 2: 45 dBA).Possibility to extend the operation range in coolingdown to -20 Q16P810REYQ46-48P8Y1B12141618242628Not 6P8Number of outdoor units1REYQ-P83011Not 14P8REYQ16P84011122224214411212464812333Not EMQ16P8Number of outdoor 323
