From thestart, Ray jumped into his role as transitionalminister and helped to lead us in thecompletion of a successful mission study. P ASTORS’CORNERChange is in the airat Starmount Church. TheSession has called theRev. John Muse as thebridge Interim SeniorPastor following myretirement April 30th. Hewill serve until a newPastor is called later on by the congregation.John is a friend with whom I know you willenjoy serving. The Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC)is busy considering candidates for thecongregation to consider as the next installedSenior Pastor. Due to the nature of their work,PNC deliberations and activities areconfidential. They may share with youperiodic updates, but who they areconsidering and how far along they are intheir search cannot be shared. From myexperiences in ministry and watching thecomings and goings of pastors in othercongregations, I am convinced that Godknows well ahead who will be called to aparticular congregation. This truth becomesmost apparent when we are able to lookback and realize how God has moved in ourlives to bring about something special. I haveno doubt that God has already chosen andcalled the minister who will serve at Starmount.Your charge is to be patient and to allowGod to act in God’s good time.In my time with you, we have sharedlaughter and tears, hopes and disappointments, worship and ministry. My life has been enrichedby serving alongside you. In the future when Ilook back on my 14 months as your SeniorPastor, I will be filled with good memoires andmuch gratitude for the warm and caringrelationships we have shared. StarmountChurch has been richly blessed with membersand friends who are very gifted and arededicated at doing ministry in Christ’s name.Newcomers in the community have witnessedthe warmth and commitment of this2 Starmount Presbyterian Churchcongregation and have come to servealongside you. God has used this congregationin marvelous ways to share the love of Christto those near and far.As you prepare for the arrival of JohnMuse, I pray that you will step out in joy towelcome him and that you will commit toshare of yourself generously in ministry withhim. I believe that Starmount has a brightand promising future. Thank you for yourlove and care. You will always have aspecial place in my heart and in my prayers.Grace and peace to you from our Lord andSavior Jesus Christ! RayWhat a difference a year makes! Atthis time last year, myletter was wishing youthe best as I embarkedon my three-monthsabbatical, marching myway toward completingmy Doctor of Ministrydegree. Twelve months later, I write this letterprior to my final trip to Michigan as a studentof Western Theological Seminary. On May 8,I will participate in graduation with sevenother Doctor of Ministry candidates – thelargest class at the seminary in a generation. One year ago, our church family wassettling in to a time within our transition withPastor Ray at the helm. As we wish himGod’s Blessings in his retirement, wecontinue in a different sort of transitionaltime. The Transition Team continues to workhard for another transitional pastor to be inplace. The Pastoral Nominating Committeecontinues to do their hard work. Bothcommittees continue to need our prayers asthey discern the work of the Holy Spirit andwho God is calling Starmount PresbyterianChurch to be in the community and the world.

Comparing notes from last year to thisyear, while so much seems different, I amconfident that much is the same: Starmount’smembers continue to be a welcomingcongregation, providing hospitality to allwho enter the church’s doors. The Holy Spiritcontinues to be present and active inworship. The staff continues to work hard, utilizing the gifts God continues to provideeach and every day. The session continuesto work and serve as the spiritual leaders ofthis congregation, making sure all is in order. The more things change, the more they staythe same.Confidently knowing that All Will Be Well,Pastor Kathrynat WorshipMay 7th: Reverend Jordan (Buck) Davis, ourformer seminary student, will be preachingas Pastor Kathryn attends graduationactivities for the weekend. What Does theEvangelism &MembershipCommittee Do?As our committee name implies, our missionis two-fold: to attract visitors/potential newmembers to become active participants inthe life of the church (Evangelism) and tosupport the current membership byencouraging involvement and participation(Membership). The process of inviting guests, welcoming guests and suggesting membershipis both evangelism and membership. Wehear repeatedly from visitors and newmembers how welcoming and friendly weare! So, thank you for your (perhapssubconscious) support of our committee’swork! You’re making our job much easier. The area of Communications also falls underour committee and supports our mission byutilizing internal and external communicationschannels to share information and engagewith members, regular attendees, visitorsand the community at large.programming to connect and servemembers such as Just Lunch, Connections,Yoga and the Bus Ministry.Current members are Carol Carpenter,Jennifer Dowler, April Hamilton, JennyOverman, and the pastors and Director ofCommunications as staff liaisons. BalanceMost yoga students statethat improving their balanceis one of the primary reasonsthey come to a yoga class.Generally they mean thatthey want their physicalbalance to improve. One of the iconicrepresentations of yoga is the silhouette of ayogi standing perfectly balanced in treepose with one knee bent to the side and thefoot on the opposite thigh with the handsserenely in prayer in front of the heart orreaching overhead. And improving physicalbalance is certainly one of the benefits oflearning yoga. But yoga also addresses mental andemotional balance. When a yoga studentcomes into class, the outer world is leftbehind and the focus narrows to the room, the yoga mat, and the practice. Breathingslows and movement becomessynchronized with the teacher and otherstudents in the class. Breathing and movingtogether through the poses of yoga calmsboth the mind and the body and invites thespirit to blend into one effort without spacefor the worries of the world.that balance of body, mind and spirit is agoal that takes a lifetime of practice. LibraryRevolutionary Mothers, Women in theStruggle for America’s Independenceby Carol Berkin “The AmericanRevolution was a home-front war thatbrought scarcity, bloodshed, anddanger into the life of every Americanincluding women. The author shows us thatwomen played a vital role throughout thestruggle: Women boycotting British goods in theyears before independence, writing propagandathat radicalized their neighbors, raising funds forthe army, and helping finance the fledglinggovernment. We see how they managed farms, plantations, and businesses while their men wentinto battle, and how they served as nurses andcooks in the army camps, risked their livesseeking personal freedom from slavery, andserved as spies, saboteurs, and warriors.Women gathered firewood, cooked, cleaned forthe troops, nursed the wounded, and risked theirlives carrying intelligence and participating inreconnaissance missions. Here, too, are AbigailAdams, Deborah Franklin, Lucy Knox, andMartha Washington, who lived with the dailyknowledge that their husbands would be hangedas traitors if the revolution did not succeed.
