F0RWARDThe day to day health care activities highly depend on medical instruments. Health facilitiesranging from rural health clinic to large specialized hospitals are in need of medical instrumentsfrom a simple scissors to a more complex and advanced medical devices. Yet, most of them lackknowledge about medical instruments that are appropriate for their need. This is particularly truein developing countries where health care technology assessments are rare.The Pharmaceutical Fund and Supply Agency (PFSA) was established by a proclamation No.553/2007 to ensure continuous supply of quality and affordable pharmaceuticals in the publichealth facilities.To realize the objective it would be necessary to categorize medical instruments which would behelpful in procurement. Having been the first of its type in Ethiopia, this First Edition of Medicalinstrument is designed to assist health facilities in the procurement of medical instruments. Thepictures shown do not suggest or endorse a specific company or brand, but are selected to aidpersonnel in the selection and procurement of medical instruments.I hope that the medical instrument catalogue will serve as useful guide for procurement ofmedical instruments in the country.Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to all those who have directly or indirectlyparticipated in the preparation and printing of this catalogue. INTRODUCTIONProcurement agencies and health facilities are required to prepare appropriate technicalspecifications and descriptions of medical instruments or equipment whenever they conducttenders or prepare purchase orders. In order to accomplish this task effectively, knowledge of thetype, nature and specific characteristics of the instruments/equipment is essential.The main purpose of this catalogue is, therefore, to provide technical guidance for procurementof medical instruments/equipment by procurement agencies and health facilities. It is also hopedthat this catalogue can serve as a useful teaching aid for health personnel training institutions.The catalogue is divided in to thirteen sections based on the areas of use of theinstruments/equipment or departments. Attempt has been made to illustrate eachinstrument/equipment in picture followed by a catalogue number, specification/description anduse (where ever it is relevant). Some sections (e.g. diagnostics) are incomplete in terms ofcoverage and will be treated separately in the future. At the end, an index is included for ease ofreference.The catalogue has a general nature and focuses on commonly usedinstruments/equipment; it can be used by any level of health facility or procurement agency byextracting information pertinent to its level.As it is the first attempt of its kind, the catalogue needs improvement and updating from time totime.
