Kid Pix Deluxe 3Welcome to Kid Pix Deluxe 3! Since its first release in 1991, Kid Pixhas won over 45 awards and is the number-one bestselling artsoftware for children. Kid Pix has inspired children to express theirnatural creativity with innovative, fun, and wacky art tools.Kid Pix Deluxe 3 has two parts: The Paint Zone lets you create pictures with drawing and paintingtools. SlideShow lets you put pictures into a presentation with visualtransitions and sounds.Choose Kid Pix Deluxe 3 from the Start menu. If this is your firsttime using Kid Pix Deluxe 3, type your name in the box that saysEnter your name here. From now on, your name will be in the listand you can click it or type it again to start. Click Go to start Kid Pix.The Kid Pix Paint ZoneWhen you start Kid Pix Deluxe 3, you see the Paint Zone:4

Using the MenusKid Pix Deluxe 3 has menus you can display and use.To display the menus:1. Move your mouse to the very top of the screen.2. When you see a triangle outlined in white, press the mouse buttonand hold it down.3. Drag the mouse to a menu to display it, and then drag down to thecommand you want.Getting HelpIn the Paint Zone or the SlideShow, you can find out about anythingon the screen. A Help window appears and a voice reads theinformation.To get on-the-spot help:1. Click the question mark.2. Click the item you want help with.3. Read and listen to the help message.4. To hear the message again, click Replay.5. To close the help window, click OK.Using the Art ToolsUsing Drawing ToolsUse Kid Pix Drawing Tools to draw different kinds of lines. There arefour drawing tools: Pencil, Chalk, Crayon, and Marker. You can drawfreehand, straight, or curved lines, rectangles, ovals, or polygons.To draw:1. Click the Drawing Tools button.5

2. Pick a tool from the left side of the tray.3. Choose a size for your line.4. Choose a shape.5. Click in the drawing area and hold down the mousebutton. Move the mouse around to draw.For rectangles, ovals, and polygons, you can draw either a filled or anempty shape. Empty shapes let the background show through. To draw a curve, click the Curve shape and hold down the mousebutton while you draw a line. Release the mouse button, and thenbend the line to the curve you want. To draw a polygon, click the Polygon shape. Draw the sides, clickingafter each one. Finish by clicking the starting point.Using Painting ToolsUse Kid Pix Painting Tools for a dazzling array of realistic and out-ofthis-world painting effects. Choose from Paintbrushes, Sound Art, andSpray Cans. Each tool has two modes.6

To paint:1. Click the Painting Tools button.2. Click the Paintbrush, Sound Art, or Spray Can tool. Look on thenext few pages for more information about each kind of tool.3. Choose a size (not all tools have sizes).4. Choose a painting mode. When you pick a mode, the optionschange.5. Choose a painting option.6. Click in the drawing area and hold down the mouse button. Move themouse around to paint.PaintbrushesClick the Paintbrush and choose a brush size and painting mode.Realistic mode paints like a real brush.Sound ArtTo use Sound Art, talk, sing, or play music into a microphone attachedto your computer. Mousemove lets you direct the painting with yourmouse.7

Spray Cans3D Shapes mode sprays three-dimensional balloons, candy, shapes, orbugs.Moving Paint mode sprays balloons, bubbles, and creatures thatdance, fly, hop, or wiggle.Using Fill BucketsFill buckets let you fill up an area of your picture. There are three FillBuckets. Solid fills an area with one solid color or a single-colorpattern. Blend fills an area with a blend of colors. Pattern fills an areawith a multi-color pattern.To fill an area:1. Click the Fill Bucket button to see the FillBuckets tray. The tray looks different,depending on the tool and mode you pick.The Solid Fill Bucket uses the current colorin the Color Picker. Choose solid or a single colorpattern.The Blend Fill Bucket doesn’t use the current color inthe Color Picker.8

The Pattern Fill Bucket doesn’t use the current colorin the Color Picker. You can pick a multi-coloredpattern.2. Pick a bucket from the left side of the tray.3. Choose a fill from the right side of the tray.4. Click inside the area to fill.Using Electric MixersElectric mixers mix up your picture. You can mix up the whole paintingwith a mega-mixer, or just parts of the painting with a mini-mixer.To mix things up:1. Click the Mixer button to see the Mixers tray.2. Pick the mega-mixer or the mini-mixer from theleft side of the tray. The mega-mixer mixes up thewhole picture with one click; the mini-mixer mixeswhere you drag the mouse.3. For the mini-mixer, choose the mixer size.4. Choose a mixing option from the right side of thetray.5. Click your picture with the mega-mixer or drag themouse with the mini-mixer to mix areas on yourpicture.9

Using Rubber StampsUse the Rubber Stamp tool to stamp animals and other shapes ontoyour picture.To use Rubber Stamps:1. Click the Rubber Stamp button to see theRubber Stamps tray.2. Choose a folder.3. Scroll through the stamp choices.4. Click the size for your Rubber Stamp.5. Click a Rubber Stamp, then click your picture.Editing Rubber StampsYou can edit Rubber Stamps and create your own.To edit rubber stamps:1. Click the Rubber Stamp button to see theRubber Stamps tray.2. Click the stamp you want to edit.3. Click the Stamp Editor (pencil) to see theRubber Stamp Editor.Use these tools to change your stamp: Use the Pencil to draw on the stamp.10

Pick a color in the Rubber Stamp Color Picker anduse the Fill Bucket to recolor the stamp. Click Undo to reverse your last change, or clickRestore Original to go back to the original stamp. Use the Firecracker to erase the whole picture soyou can start from scratch. Click Flip to turn your stamp over from left to right. Click Rotate to turn your stamp 90 degrees eachtime you click.4. Click OK when you’re finished.Using Paper TextureYou can change the background texture of your Kid Pix picture. Then,when you draw with the Crayon, Marker, or Chalk, a pattern willshow through under your drawing.To change the paper texture:1. Click the Paper Texture button at the bottomright corner of your drawing page. The PaperTexture tray opens.2. Scroll through the paper textures in the tray.3. Click the texture you want. You can see the textureyou selected next to the Paper Texture button.4. Draw with the Crayon, Marker, or Chalk to seethe texture.Using the Color Picker and Eye Dropper11

To pick a color in the Color Picker:1. Move your mouse toward the color splotch.The Color Picker pops up.2. Click a color on the Color Picker. Choose a regularcolor, a shade of gray, or a skin color. As soon asyou click a color, the color splotch changes to showyour new choice. Move the mouse off the ColorPicker to close it and begin painting or drawing.To pick up a color with the Eye Dropper:1. Open the Color Picker by moving your mouse nearit.2. Click the Eye Dropper.3. Move the Eye Dropper over your picture. As yourmouse moves, the color splotch changes to show thecolor that the Eye Dropper can pick up.4. Click when the color you want appears on the colorsplotch. The Color Picker closes. The color youclicked becomes the new color for drawing andpainting.Using ErasersThe Big Eraser erases your whole picture.Any paper texture or sound you added to yourpicture is still there. You can also click theFirecracker to erase your whole picture. The LittleEraser erases where you drag with the mouse,leaving white space.You can’t erase stickers, animations, movies, or textboxes. (To erase these, select them and then pressthe Delete key.)12

To erase your whole picture:1. Click the Eraser button. The Erasers tray appears.2. Click the Big Eraser.3. Click your picture.To erase part of your picture:1. Click the Eraser button. The Erasers tray appears.2. Click the Little Eraser.3. Click a size for the eraser.4. Pick one of these: To erase with a round outline, click the circlesetting. To erase with a square outline, click the squaresetting.5. Pick an eraser option.6. Drag where you want to erase.Using the Undo GuyClick the Undo Guy whenever you do something toyour picture that you don’t want to keep. Click againto redo what you just undid.13

All About TextDrawing Text BoxesWhen text is in a text box, you can check its spelling and make yourcomputer read it out loud.To add text:1. Click the Text button. The Text tray appears.2. Click your picture where you want the text.3. Start typing. The text box grows as you fill it up.Text in Small Kids ModeIn Small Kids Mode, adding text is like using a rubber stamp. Lettersbecome part of the background. You can’t check spelling, change thetext appearance, or make your computer read the text out loud, butKid Pix says the letters’ names when you click them in the Text tray.1. Click the Text button. The Text tray appears.2. Click any letter in the tray to hear its name. To seemore letters and numbers, click the scrolling arrowson the Text tray.3. Click a letter to add it.ABC Text ToolABC Text becomes part of the background. You can’t change it afteryou add it to your picture.To use the ABC Text tool:1. Click the Toolbox menu. (Refer to page 5, “Usingthe Menus.”)2. Click Edit ABC Text.3. In the ABC Text dialog box, type the text.4. Click OK.14

5. Click the Paint button.PaintBrush6. Click the Paint Brush.7. Choose Wacky mode and scroll through theoptions.8. Click the ABC Text brush, and start painting tosee the text.Working with Text BoxesYou can resize a text box, move it, or delete it. Start by selecting thetext box in Grab mode.To change a text box:1. Click the Grab button. The Grab tray appears.2. Click the Hand.3. Click the text box to see its edit frame.4. Do any of these things: To move a text box, click the box at the top of itsframe and drag it. To change the size or shape of a text box, drag itshandles. The text wraps around inside the newshape. To delete selected text, press the Delete key onyour keyboard.15

To flatten text so it’s part of the background, clickthe Toolbox menu and choose Flatten Text.Reading Text Out LoudYou can play the picture to hear all the text boxes, top to bottom andleft to right. You can’t hear rubber- stamp text, except when you clickthe letters in the Text tray.To hear one text box read aloud:1. Click the text box you want to hear.2. Click the Controls menu and click Turn Text-ToSpeech On. If the menu says “Turn Text-To-SpeechOff,” don’t click it—it’s already on. (See page 5 forhow to access the Menu.)3. Click the Read Text button in the Text tray.To hear all text boxes read aloud:1. Click the Controls menu and click Turn Text-ToSpeech On.2. Click the Play button at the top right of the screen.Teaching Kid Pix to PronounceKid Pix might not know how to say people’s names, or other specialwords.To change the pronunciation:1. From the Toolbox menu, choose Say It This Way.2. In the Original Word box, type the word that Kid Pix ispronouncing incorrectly.3. In the Pronounce As box, type the phonetic spelling of theword. For example, the letters “ph” sound like “f,” so thephonetic spelling of “Stephan” would be “Stefan.”4. Click Pronounce to hear the new pronunciation.5. When the word sounds right, click Enter.Using Library ToolsIn Kid Pix libraries, you can look in the trays for interesting things toadd to your picture. At the top left of the screen are four oval buttons.Each one opens a Kid Pix library.16

A background in your picture is like the scenery in a play.It goes behind everything else you draw. Click abackground to select it and drag it onto your page.A sticker floats above your picture like a balloon at aparade. You can make it a different size, flip it, or move itto a different place.When you “play” your page, the animations movearound like cartoons. You can drag them anyplace in yourpicture.Each page can have one sound. Pick from a library orrecord own.Playing Your PictureWhen you play your picture, each object on the page plays over andover.To play your picture:1. Click the Play button. The button changes to a Stopbutton.2. Click the Stop button to stop playing.Printing Your PictureYou can print a Kid Pix picture at regular size or as a poster. Kid Pixprints the frames of movies and animations that are showing at themoment that you print.Small Kids Mode Users: Kid Pix doesn’t print in Small Kids Mode.Turn Small Kids Mode off to print.To print your picture:1. Click the Print button.17

2. Choose Full Page or Poster. When you print as aposter, Kid Pix prints a piece of your picture on each sheetof paper, and then you tape the sheets of paper togetherto make the poster.3. If you chose Poster, pick 2X2 or 3X3. The 2X2 choiceprints your picture on four pieces of paper. The 3X3 choiceprints your picture on nine pieces of paper.4. Click OK to print the picture.Starting a New PictureYou can start with a blank page, or use the Idea Machine like anelectronic coloring book.To start with a blank page:1. Click the New button. If you didn’t save the picturethat’s already open, Kid Pix asks if you want to save it.2. Click Yes. The Save dialog box appears.3. Type a name for your picture and click Save to saveyour picture and start a new one.To use the Idea Machine:1. From the Toolbox menu, choose Idea Machine.2. Click the picture starter you want to use.3. Click Open. If you didn’t save the picture that’s alreadyopen, Kid Pix asks if you want to save it.4. Click Yes. The Save dialog box appears.5. Type a name for your picture and click Save to saveyour picture and start a new one. The picture’s soundplays when you open it.Saving a PictureKid Pix saves your pictures in the My Pictures folder, so they’re easyto find and open again.To save your picture:1. Click the Save button.2. Type a name for your picture. Kid Pix always asks if sureyou want to save over an already-saved picture.3. Click Save.18

Opening a PictureYou can open any picture you created and saved.To open a picture you saved earlier:1. Click the File menu.2. Click Open. If you didn’t save the picture that’s already open,Kid Pix asks if you want to save it.3. Click Yes. The Save dialog box appears.4. Type a name for the picture and click Save.5. Click the picture to open and click Open.Exporting a PictureYou can export a copy of your Kid Pix picture, so someone without KidPix can play it, or so you can open it in a different program. Forexample, if you save your Kid Pix picture in the JPEG format, you canadd it to a Web page. None of the export formats support Text toSpeech. Some of them don’t support animation, movies, or sounds.To export a picture:1. Click the File menu.2. Click Export.3. Navigate to where you want to save your exported picture.4. Type a name for the exported picture.5. Choose an export format. JPEG, PICT, or BMPEverything in the picture is flattened. If you plan to attachthe picture to an email message, use the JPEG option.JPEG and PICT pictures can be opened on a Macintoshcomputer; JPEG and BMP pictures can be opened on aWindows computer. FlashYour animations and sounds will play. Flash requires abrowser with a Flash player plug-in. To download the plugin, point your browser to www.macromedia.com. Stand-aloneThe exported picture runs without any other software. Ifyour picture has a movie in it, the QuickTime file flattensthe movie to a single frame. Page as QuickTime MovieThe exported file can be played on any kind of computer,but the person playing it needs a QuickTime plug-in orplayer. Use the QuickTime plug-in to open and play theexported file.6. Click Save.19

Creating and Opening SlideShowsYou can make a SlideShow with your pictures. Load pictures into yourSlideShow and put them in order. Add transition and slide advanceoptions. Then save, play, print, or export your SlideShow.Going to SlideShowYou can go back and forth between the Paint Zone and SlideShow.To go to SlideShow: Click the SlideShow button in the Paint Zone or chooseGo to SlideShow from the Controls menu.Starting a SlideShowYou can create a brand new SlideShow or open an existing one.To create a new SlideShow:1. Click the New SlideShow button in the SlideShow trayat the bottom of the screen.2. Type a name for your SlideShow. The name of yourSlideShow appears at the top of the screen and a newSlideShow icon appears in the SlideShow tray.To open a SlideShow: Double-click the icon for the SlideShow you want in theSlideShow tray at the bottom of the screen.The SlideShow tray shows SlideShows in you’re mySlideShows folder. To open a SlideShow in a differentfolder, use Open on the File menu.Loading Pictures20

Each slideholder in the SlideShow can contain a Kid Pix picture. Onceyou load the pictures, you can move them into any order you like. Ifyou leave spaces blank, the SlideShow will skip those spaces when youplay your SlideShow.To load a picture:1. Click the Load button for the slideholder where you wantthe picture to appear. Hold the mouse over a slideholder tosee the Load button below it.2. Click the picture to load.3. Click Open.Playing Your SlideShowYou can play a SlideShow to see all your effects.To play your SlideShow:1. Click the Play button.2. If your slide advance options are set to wait for a mouseclick or a keyboard key, click or type a key to advance theslides.3. To stop playing before the SlideShow ends, press theEscape key.Saving Your SlideShowSlideShows are saved in your My SlideShows folder (inside the MyPictures folder).To save your SlideShow:1. Click the Save button.2. Type a name for your SlideShow.3. Click Save.Exporting Your SlideShow21

You can export a copy of your SlideShow to play without Kid Pix, or toplay on another computer with Kid Pix. Exported SlideShows don’tinclude the Text-to-Speech feature. For information on Text-toSpeech, see “Reading Text Out Loud” on page 37.To export your SlideShow:1. Click the File menu.2. Click Export.3. Navigate to where you want to save your exportedSlideShow.4. Type a name for the exported SlideShow.5. Choose an export format. SlideShow to Go Creates a folder with everything youneed to run your SlideShow on a different computer withKid Pix. Copy the resulting folder to the other computer,then use the Open command on the File menu to openthe SlideShow file in that computer’s version of Kid Pix.Kid Pix will find all the files it needs to show yourslideshow. QuickTime can be played on any kind of computer. Onlytiming advance options are supported. Transitions are notincluded. To play the resulting file, use the QuickTimeplug-in to open and play your exported file.6. Click Save.The Kid Pix 3 User Guide was modified to develop this module.
