2018211922STAGE FIVE Belting upThe solution is similar to the way in which wepreviously fixed the cloth to the ceiling, but thistime we’re using another tag. From the ClothildeTags menu, apply a Belt tag to the cloak. In point mode, select some points either side of the cloak’s shoulder area.Only a few points will be needed along the front, and perhapsa couple more from the second row.23048 3D WORLD February 20062425

Cloth simulation TUTORIALSSTAGE FIVE (Continued) Belting upiEXPERT TIPDo-it-all fabric powerAfter applying settings, go back into the Cloth tagand make sure Self Collision is ticked under theExpert tab, then recalculate. Select the Cloak objectin the Object Manager, hold down [Alt] and, from the Moccamenu, add a Cloth NURBS object. The cloak is now a child ofthe NURBS object.26Select the Cloth NURBS object and set the thicknessto 1.5. This goes some way towards smoothing themesh and will add thickness, but the cloak could stillbenefit from more smoothing, so add a HyperNURBS object, too. Now, the thickened edge is rounded, along with the restof the cloak.27With its sophisticated dynamicsand collision detection, you canuse Clothilde in the simulation of anumber of other real-world objects. For example, a ‘cloth’ car crashinginto a ‘collider’ wall, fronds of kelpmoving in the currents of the sea, orthe wings of a butterfly flapping. Asingle piece of ‘cloth’ can also havea number of different propertiesacross its surface with the use ofvertex weight maps. For example, fora dress that is tightly fitting aroundthe torso and flared around thelegs, you might use a weight map tocontrol how much each area can flow.In the Dresser tab, relax the cloth a couple of stepsand click the ‘Init State – Set’ button. The cloak’sdefault position is now set, and the Cloth engine canbe switched off for the sake of our still render scene. Dropthe cloak hierarchy into the Main Figures hierarchy and Copyand Paste into the scene file; position as required.28Just for fun, let’s go back a couple of steps in ourprevious cloak document, reactivate the clothengine, and see the effect of adding wind forces tothe cloak. In the Forces tab, make the Wind Direction X 1m,and the Z -1m. Make the wind strength 5. Ensure thatthe Hyper and Cloth NURBS are deactivated and click onCalculate Cache.29In the main scene file, arrange your newly createdcloth elements to your individual requirements. We decided to add a gold, silky edge to our cloakwith a Texture Selection tag (both textures are in the scenefile). Sometimes, you may find that, despite all the clothsimulations, you’re still not entirely happy with the look ofthe object’s shape, yet there’s nothing to stop you using the30Brush tool (or whatever you prefer to use) to sculptthe mesh even further towards your desired form. Wedid exactly that in this instance (see above), reducingthe stiffness and ‘inflation’ of the hood. This isn’t acomprehensive exploration of all of Clothilde’s manyfeatures by any means, but we’ve hopefully whettedyour appetite for more! February 2006 3D WORLD 049
