INSTALLATION AND OPERATION MANUALISM-4081 INTEGRATED SHUTDOWN MODULESYSTEM CONCEPTWhen not transferring fuel, the pressure in theunderground piping system for gasoline distribution may fall due to thermal contraction of thefuel within the line. This condition may createproblems during dispensing operations. TheISM-4081 Integrated Shutdown Module ensuresline pressure by periodically starting the submersible pump (turbine) to repressurize the line. The ISM-4081 includes the following features: Automatic fuel line repressurization Line leak monitoring Sequence turbine control for manifold applications Pressure failure alarm detection Sump sensor monitoring (optional) Sump sensor alarm detection Full shutdown of pump activity when pressure alarm condition is detected Optional full shutdown of pump activitywhen sump alarm condition is detected Pump contactor control in response to anauthorization signal Ability to disable the repressure cycle basedon time-of-day to allow tank testing Ability to disable the repressure cycle basedon an AC input signal Ability to disable the repressure cycle basedon a DC input signal2.A two-line by 16-charcter display is locatedon the ISM’s front panel. Programming andsystem status information is presented onthis display. Information regarding thesemessages is presented later in this manual.3.The timers operate synchronously with respect to a dispensing authorization signal. This means that the repressure sequence willbe interrupted by the initiation of a fuel dispensing request. When the authorizationsignal is turned off, the repressure cycle isreinitiated in the monitoring state.4.Authorization signals will be ignored andpump operation will be terminated if a pressure alarm is detected. Full shutdown mayalso be enabled for sump alarm detection.Pump control will be restored when thealarm condition is corrected and the RESETpush-button is cycled.5.Operation of the pump may be disabledduring periods of tank integrity testing. Anactive dispensing process will not beinterrupted by the disable signal.6.The monitoring of a mechanical leak detector provided by Vaporless Manufacturing isrequired for operation of the ISM. Themonitoring of a sump sensor is optional.7.With power applied, the ISM is active. Thepump timer is the first to operate followingthe application of power. The pump will remain active until proper line pressure isachieved. Following the completion of therepressure cycle, the ISM enters the monitoring state looking for loss of line pressure.8.While the ISM-4080 can operate in a standalone mode, it also can be connected in aserial mode to enable sequenced operationof staged turbines. This is particularly usefulwhere the outputs of several turbines are fedinto a common distribution manifold. Afterreceiving an authorization signal andcompleting a leak test, the contacts of theREADY relay are used to signal the nextcontroller in the sequence.BASIC SYSTEM CHARACTERISTICSThe microcomputer based ISM controls thesequencing of two timers. The first determinesthe pump running time. The second determinesthe delay time following the detection of low linepressure. The following statements outline thebasic operation of the ISM-4081.1.The four push-button switches located onthe ISM’s front panel are used to programthe time-of-day, the pump duration time, thedelay time, the disable interval, and the shutdown response. Information regarding thesefunctions is presented later in this manual.ISM-4081 Integrated Shutdown ModuleInstallation and Operation Manual Rev 10-30-07Vaporless Manufacturing1800-367-0185

ELECTRICAL CONNECTIONSCONTROLLER LABELINGThe following information is provided on theISM’s label. The installer should be familiar withthis information. Figure 1 illustrates the power connections for a115 Vac mains circuit. Figure 2 illustrates thepower connection for a 230 Vac mains circuits.Controller name, model and serial numberVoltage, current and load specificationsNotice of application informationManufacture’s name and telephone numberAUTHORIZATION SIGNAL INPUTThe operation of the submersible pump is underthe control of the ISM-4081. This means thatpump operation due to both the repressure cycleand authorization requests is controlled by theISM. In retrofit situations, the authorizationsignal needs to be relocated from the contactor tothe control module.ENCLOSURE AND MOUNTINGThe ISM is packaged in a standard DIN-railmountable enclosure. It is designed for operationin a non-hazardous environment such as anequipment room. It is recommended that themodule be located in the vicinity of the pumpcontactor with which it is associated.Figure 3 illustrates a typical installation prior toincorporation of the module. Figure 4 illustratesa typical configuration for the authorization signal following the incorporation of the ISM.A section of DIN-rail mounting strip is providedwith the ISM. Secure this strip to a panel boardusing screws whose head does not project abovethe mounting surface of the rail. Following thesecure mounting of the rail, snap the moduleonto the rail.If the ISM-4081 is used in a stage sequenceconfiguration, Figure 4 illustrates the wiring forthe authorization signal to the first controller inthe sequence.Figure 1 — 115 Vac Mains ConnectionFigure 3 — Typical Original InstallationFigure 2 — 230 Vac Mains ConnectionFigure 4 —Authorize Circuit with ISMISM-4081 Integrated Shutdown ModuleInstallation and Operation Manual Rev 10-30-07Vaporless Manufacturing2800-367-0185

When pump operation is interrupted or preventeddue to alarm detection, normal operation of thepump may be restored by correcting the alarmcondition followed by operation of the RESETpush-button.CONTACTOR OUTPUTThe operation of the submersible pump is underthe control of the ISM-4081. This means thatpump operation due to both the repressure cycleand authorization requests is controlled from theISM. In retrofit situations, the system wiringmust be changed so that the contactor is drivenby the module. Two connection configurations are available.Figure 6 illustrates the connection of the requiredleak detector piston monitor switch. Figure 7illustrates the connection of the piston switchand the optional normally closed sump sensor.Figure 3 illustrates a typical installation prior toincorporation of the ISM. Figure 5 illustrates atypical configuration for the contactor outputfollowing the incorporation of the ISM.Note that the voltage and currents supplied fromthe ISM to these remote switches is intrinsicallysafe. While the controller is packaged for a nonhazardous environment, the monitoring switchesmay be located in a hazardous environment. Careshould be taken to comply with local regulationsregarding the transition of the barrier betweennon-hazardous and hazardous locations.Note that the sump sensor switch is closed whennot activated, and open circuit when activated. The piston switch is a closed when the leakdetector is fully open, and otherwise measures10,000 ohms.Figure 5 — Contactor Circuit with ModulePRESSURE SWITCH AND SUMP SENSORThe ISM-4081 monitors the performance of theLD-2000 or LD-3000 mechanical leak detectorsprovided by Vaporless Manufacturing. If adequate line pressure is not developed either duringthe repressure cycle or a dispensing operation, the pump operation is terminated and a pressurealarm is indicatedFigure 6 — Piston Switch Only CircuitTo provide this capability, a proprietary switchassembly, which is provided with the controlmodule, is screwed into the top of the leak detector. The connection of this feature is requiredfor operation of the system. The ISM-4081 also features the ability to monitor a sump liquid level sensor. When the sumpsensor is activated, pump operation may be terminated. In all cases a sump alarm is indicated. The connection of this feature is optional.ISM-4081 Integrated Shutdown ModuleInstallation a
