vailable. The installation and the flowdirection can be chosen freely; mostof the KITO detonation arrestersare also bidirectional, i.e. protectionis proven against a detonation fromboth sides. The flame arresterelement are optimised for lowestpressure drop while using a modularsystem of housings. For commonly liquid filled pipesthere is a special line of detonationarresters built as liquid seals (fig. 8).Non return valves are mainly usedin suction lines (fig. 9) with liquids.Dry types of detonation arresterscan also act as endurance burningflame arresters. For this purpose apipe of a predetermined length, dependant on the nominal diameterof the pipe, has to be connected tothe outlet flange of the arrester. Thisinstallation replaces the ventilationhood (fig. 2).Where there are special conditionsappertaining to the nature of thesystem, e.g. installation in torchlines or thermal incineration plants, the incorporation of one or morethermal sensors on the flamearrester element is mandatory foridentifying an outbreak of fire. Aappropriate switch circuit thattriggersemergencymeasuresagainst a potential endurance firemust be connected.fig 7 KITO detonation arrester for unstable detonations with hydrogenfig 8 KITO liquid seal detonation arresterfig 6 KITO detonation arrester at workfig 9 KITO non return valve, detonationprooffig 10 KITO detonation arrester, also forhigher pressure

Deflagration proof KITO armaturesIf explosive gases ignite in a pipethen the reaction initially starts asdeflagration (explosion) characterised by relatively low pressuresand flame speeds.fig 11 KITO deflagration arresterKITO deflagration arresters areinstalled to prevent a continuation ofthe reaction into other parts of theconnected system. In contrast todetonation arresters, there arelimitations on the length of pipe onwhich the deflagration arrester maybe installed. These limitations aregoverned by the distance of thepotential ignition source from thearrester.Where there are special conditionsappertaining to the nature of thesystem, e.g. installation in torchlines or thermal incineration plants, the incorporation of one or morethermal sensors on the flamearrester element is mandatory foridentifying an outbreak of fire. It is available as a PRV,a PVRV, or combination with a gascompensation coupling (fig. 14).Also devices without flame arresterelement (fig. 15) as well as specialconstruction for corrosive media arewithin the range of supply.fig 14 KITO railway tank wagon valvefig 15 KITO railway tank wagon valveKITO also manufacture specialflamearresterdevicesforinstallation in tank containers androad tankers (fig. 16).These devices comply with theactual requirements on tanksaccording to ADR and RID.fig 16 KITO vacuum valve on tank containers

Construction of the KITO flame arrester elementKITO devices as explosion-, detonation- or endurance-burn proof flamearrester are standardized inthe European Standard EN12874. They all havepassed the EC-typeexamination tests andcome with the CE mark. Therefore they are inaccordance with theEuropean Directive 94/9/EC(ATEX 100).The Guidelines to the European Directive 99/92/EG(ATEX 137) as well as German national technicalrules are clearlydemanding the use offlame arrester in differentsituations. We have developed the KITO flamearrester element, based on theprinciple of the Davy screen and itsderivation, the “gravel pot”.Although the Davy screen andgravel pot no longer conform to thelatest requirements, the KITO flamearresterelementmeetstherequirements of all regulations andspecifications.A KITO flame arrester elementconsists of two stainless steel stripsof 0.2 or 0.15 mm thickness; thewidth varies depending on theconstruction. One flat and one corrugated stripare wound tightly together, forminga circular element with varyingdiameters dependent on the lengthof the wound strips.Flame arrester element during manufacturing processThe forms a gap between thesmooth and the corrugated stripwith a triangular section. The widthof the gap is determined by theheight of the corrugation. The gapwidth used in a specific flamearrester is in conjunction with theMESG of the mixture but is notequivalent with it.Special widths for gas/air or vapourmixtures with abnormal flashbackcharacteristics can be determined incooperation with test institute likePTB;BAMorIBExUandmanufactured by us. Also in thiscases the device can be CE markedthrough a unitverification procedure.

Other KITO armaturesSupplementary to our flame arresterarmatures we manufacture a varietyof versions from inline valves toend-of-line valves with particularlylow settings.Special features and specialversions such as e.g. heating withelectricity, water or steam, inductiveproximity switches etc. can bemanufactured according to theclient's specification. Our armatures are of course alsoavailable in special materials e.g.plastics or highly corrosion resistantsteel and special designs.fig 17 KITO PV-valve for inline usefig 18 KITO vacuum breather relief valvewith electrical trace heatingfig 19 KITO PV-valve for inline use madeof plasticsMaintenance of KITO armaturesOne of the special features of allKITO flame arrester armatures istheminimalmaintenancerequirement. Being an approvedmanufacturerandregisteredmaintenance company we will bepleased to give our advice aboutcontrol checks as well as othermaintenance and adjustment workand how to do this safely. We also offer training for your staffin means of how to maintain ourarmatures, in our house or on yoursite, whichever is more comfortablefor you.OlderarmatureswithoutCEmarking are not allowed to bereplaced completely with spareparts. If necessary please ask forour advice in these cases. You can order spare parts for ourKITO armatures at short notice bystating the type and factory number. This and other information is to betaken from the nameplate whichidentifies each fitting.Presented by :Schmalbachstraße 2A . The KITO flame arrester element simultaneously provides constant and reliable protection against any flashback into the container. Using a basic design we produce KITO ventilation hoods (fig. 3). If the KITO flame arrester is able to stop the flame for an undefined time this ful
