WHEN YOU SEE THIS SYMBOL, HEED ITSWARNING.WARNING: The Engine Exhaust from this product contains chemicals known to theState of California to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.DANGER: Your lawn mower was built to be operated according to the rules for safe operation in thismanual. As with any type of power equipment, carelessness or error on the part of the operator canresult in serious injury. This lawn mower is capable of amputating hands and feet and throwing objects.Failure to observe the following safety instructions could result in serious injury or death.1.GENERAL OPERATION Read, understand, and follow all instructions in theoperator’s manual and on the machine beforestarting. Keep this manual in a safe place for futureand regular reference and for ordering replacementparts. Never leave a running machine unattended. Alwaysturn off blade(s), place transmission in neutral, setpark brake, stop engine and remove key beforedismounting. Only allow responsible individuals familiar with theinstructions to operate the machine. Know controlsand how to stop the machine quickly. Stop engine and wait until blade(s) comes to acomplete stop before (a) removing grass catcher orunclogging chute, or (b) making any repairs, adjusting or removing any grass or debris. Turn off blade(s) when not mowing. Do not put hands or feet under cutting deck or nearrotating parts. Mow only in daylight or good artificial light. Clear the area of objects such as rocks, toys, wire, etc., which could be picked up and thrown by theblade. A small object may have been overlooked andcould be accidentally thrown by the mower in anydirection and cause injury to you or a bystander. Tohelp avoid a thrown objects injury, keep children, bystanders and helpers at least 75 feet from themower while it is in operation. Always wear safetyglasses or safety goggles during operation or whileperforming an adjustment or repair, to protect eyesfrom foreign objects. Stop the blade(s) whencrossing gravel drives, walks or roads. Do not operate the machine while under theinfluence of alcohol or drugs. Be sure the area is clear of other people beforemowing. Stop machine if anyone enters the area. Never make a cutting height adjustment while engineis running if operator must dismount to do so. Never carry passengers. Wear sturdy, rough-soled work shoes and closefitting slacks and shirts. Do not wear loose fittingclothes or jewelry. They can be caught in movingparts. Never operate a unit in bare feet, sandals, orsneakers. Watch for traffic when operating near or crossingroadways. Use extra care when loading or unloading themachine into a trailer or truck. This unit should not bedriven up or down a ramp onto a trailer or truckunder power, because the unit could tip over, causing serious personal injury. The unit must bepushed manually on a ramp to load or unloadproperly. Disengage blade(s) before shifting into reverse andbacking up. Always look down and behind beforeand while backing. Be aware of the mower and attachment dischargedirection and do not point it at anyone. Do notoperate the mower without either the entire grasscatcher or the chute guard in place. Check overhead clearance carefully before drivingunder power lines, wires, bridges or low hanging treebranches, before entering or leaving buildings, or inany other situation where the operator may be struckor pulled from the unit, which could result in seriousinjury. Slow down before turning. Operate the machinesmoothly. Avoid erratic operation and excessivespeed. Disengage all attachment clutches, thoroughlydepress the brake pedal, and shift into neutral beforeattempting to start engine.2

3. CHILDREN Your mower is designed to cut normal residentialgrass of a height no more than 10". Do not attempt tomow through unusually tall, dry grass (e.g., pasture)or piles of dry leaves. Debris may build up on themower deck or contact the engine exhaustpresenting a potential fire hazard.Tragic accidents can occur if the operator is not alert to thepresence of children. Children are often attracted to themachine and the mowing activity. Never assume that childrenwill remain where you last saw them. Keep children out of the mowing area and in watchfulcare of an adult other than the operator.2. SLOPE OPERATION Be alert and turn machine off if children enter thearea.Slopes are a major factor related to loss of control and tipover accidents which can result in severe injury or death. Allslopes require extra caution. If you cannot back up the slopeor if you feel uneasy on it, do not mow it.For your safety, use the slope gauge included as part of thismanual to measure slopes before operating this unit on asloped or hilly area. If the slope is greater than 15 as shownon the slope gauge, do not operate this unit on that area orserious injury could result. Before and when backing, look behind and down forsmall children. Never carry children, even with the blades off. Theymay fall off and be seriously injured or interfere withthe safe machine operation. Never allow children under 14 years old to operatethe machine. Children 14 years and over should onlyoperate machine under close parental supervisionand proper instruction.DO: Remove obstacles such as rocks, limbs, etc. Use extra care when approaching blind corners, shrubs, trees or other objects that may obscure yourvision of a child or other hazard. Watch for holes, ruts or bumps. Uneven terrain couldoverturn the machine. Tall grass can hide obstacles. Remove key when machine is unattended to preventunauthorized operation. Mow up and down slopes, not across. Use slow speed. Choose a low enough gear so thatyou will not have to stop or shift while on the slope.Always keep machine in gear when going downslopes to take advantage of engine braking action.4. SERVICE Use extreme care in handling gasoline and otherfuels. They are extremely flammable and the vaporsare explosive. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations forwheel weights or counterweights to improve stability. Use only an approved container. Use extra care with grass catchers or otherattachments. These can change the stability of themachine. Never remove fuel cap or add fuel with the enginerunning. Allow engine to cool at least two minutesbefore refueling. Keep all movement on the slopes slow and gradual.Do not make sudden changes in speed or direction.Rapid engagement or braking could cause the frontof the machine to lift and rapidly flip over backwardswhich could cause serious injury. Replace fuel cap securely and wipe off any spilledfuel before starting the engine as it may cause a fireor explosion. Avoid starting or stopping on a slope. If tires losetraction, disengage the blade(s) and proceed slowlystraight down the slope. Never refuel the machine indoors because fuelvapors will accumulate in the area. Extinguish all cigarettes, cigars, pipes and othersources of ignition. Never store the fuel container or machine insidewhere there is an open flame or spark, such as a gashot water heater, space heater or furnace.DO NOT: Never run a machine inside a closed area. Do not turn on slopes unless necessary; then, turnslowly and gradually downhill, if possible. To reduce fire hazard, keep the machine free ofgrass, leaves or other debris build-up. Clean up oil orfuel spillage. Allow machine to cool at least 5minutes before storing. Do not mow near drop-offs, ditches or embankments. The mower could suddenly turn over if a wheel isover the edge of a cliff or ditch, or if an edge caves in. Before cleaning, repairing or inspecting, makecertain the blade and all moving parts have stopped.Disconnect the spark plug wire, and keep the wireaway from the spark plug to prevent accidentalstarting. Do not mow on wet grass. Reduced traction couldcause sliding. Do not try to stabilize the machine by putting yourfoot on the ground. Do not use grass catcher on steep slopes.3

Muffler, engine and belt guards become hot duringoperation and can cause a burn. Allow to cooldown before touching. Check the blade and engine mounting bolts atfrequent intervals for proper tightness. Also, visually inspect blade for damage (e.g., excessivewear, bent, cracked). Replace with blade whichmeets original equipment specifications. Do not change the engine governor settings oroverspeed the engine. Excessive engine speedsare dangerous. Keep all nuts, bolts and screws tight to be sure theequipment is in safe working condition. Observe proper disposal laws and regulations.Improper disposal of fluids and materials can harmthe environment and the ecology. Never tamper with safety devices. Check theirproper operation regularly. Use all guards asinstructed in this manual. Prior to disposal, determine the proper method todispose of waste from your local EnvironmentalProtection Agency. Recycling centers areestablished to properly dispose of materials in anenvironmentally safe fashion. After striking a foreign object, stop the engine, remove the wire from the spark plug andthoroughly inspect the mower for any damage.Repair the damage before restarting and operatingthe mower. Use proper containers when draining fluids. Do notuse food or beverage containers that may misleadsomeone into drinking from them. Properly disposeof the containers immediately following thedraining of fluids. Grass catcher components are subject to wear, damage and deterioration, which could exposemoving parts or allow objects to be thrown. Foryoursafetyprotection, frequentlycheckcomponents and replace with manufacturer’srecommended parts when necessary. DO NOT pour oil or other fluids into the ground, down a drain or into a stream, pond, lake or otherbody of water. Observe Environmental ProtectionAgency regulations when disposing of oil, fuel, coolant, brake fluid, filters, batteries, tires andother harmful waste. Mower blades are sharp and can cut.
