Display cases:Introduction-Who is interested in 66?This display case opens the exhibit by displayingthe publications and materials of groups interestedin Route 66 today. These include: newsletters andperiodicals from organizations and agencies likethe Canadian Route 66 Association; Historic Route66 Association of Arizona and the U.S. NationalPark Service. In addition, there are emblems andmaterials representative of international groupslike the Arizona-France Route 66 Association;Corvette Club of France, Irish Route 66-ers andothers. Images include Andy Payne running in the“Bunyon Derby” near Flagstaff in 1928, BottleTrees of Barstow, California 66 highway markers,and the Bagdad café.Seligman Diorama:Built by Philip Scandura of Flagstaff, thisdiorama represents Seligman Arizona from themiddle 1950s. The diorama features 23buildings, two alignments of Route 66, periodcorrect vehicles and Santa Fe freight train. Scaleof the diorama is 1:160. Eastern Arizona Destinations from Route 66:This case demonstrates the wide array of travelerdestinations (or distractions?) ranging from National Parksand Monuments to kitschy roadside trading posts, curioshops, traditional and historic motels and hotels. There arepostcards of local motels and hotels; images of theJackrabbit Trading Post in Joseph City, AZ., and some of itsmore recent visitors, along with regional Route 66-relatedmemorabilia. Note the jackrabbit silhouette reproduced ontop of the case.Trading Posts, Native Cultures, Railroads and 66Arizona’s portion of Route 66 passes by or through a numberof Native American reservations and cultural centers.Represented are historic images of those cultures andmemorabilia and imagery of the Trading Post system thatserved them. Also depicted are books, images and materialthat illustrate the interplay between the railroad and Route66.This display case helps to illustrate the richness of life alongRoute 66, and the deep history of the places it passedthrough. Monographs include: Inventing the Southwest : TheFred Harvey Company and Native American Art and TheSouthwestern Indian Detours : The Story of the Fred HarveySanta

Flagstaff and Route 66Flagstaff, like many northern Arizona towns lives onRoute 66. For many years all of the traffic heading westand east on 66 passed through Flagstaff. As a result, themain corridor through town became the focal point oftraveler-related business. Depicted are memorabiliafrom local motels, businesses, and historic images ofthe events held on 66 including years of the annual PowWow parades.Western Arizona Destinations from Route 66:Western Arizona has a few destinations of its own (GrandCanyon, Lake Havasu City, the longest stretch of old 66,and the entrance to California across the Colorado River).Included in this case are contemporary and historic imagesof Williams, Ash Fork, Seligman and more. The HistoricRoute 66 Association of Arizona is introduced in this casewith material from its annual “Fun Run” that runs fromSeligman to Golden Shores each year. Books include theimportant works of Wallis, Dedek and Krim (see thebibliography for the exhibit) which elevate concepts aroundRoute 66 beyond popular imagery. The vintage highwaymileage marker comes from Route 66 in western Arizona.

Preservation and Route 66:There are many groups and individuals who are interestedin the preservation of Route 66. Depicted here are groupsand individuals who work to preserve Route 66 from avariety of perspectives. Also included are images of thesubjects of the Route 66 Oral History Project conducted bythe staff of Special Collections and Archives, ClineLibrary Northern Arizona University. Individualsrepresented include: Jim Conkle, Angel Delgadillo, EdieDeSoto, Lorrie Fleming, George Game, The Hermannfamily and Mary Trask (their oral histories are availablefor listening/viewing on the library’s Digital Archivessite). Groups represented include: Historic Route 66Association of Arizona, and the Canadian Route 66Association. Publications include Dr. David Dunaway’s“Across the Tracks: A Route 66 Story, and CDs from theNPR series of the same title.Maps and 66:The last display case includes a variety of map representations of Route 66 inArizona, as well as images of the southwest prior to the creation of Route 66.Also depicted are popular images of Route 66 and Arizona in pamphlets andpostcards.

Miscellanea:Depicted at left (top) is a piece ofRoute 66 from along the CrooktonRoad that demonstrates thehighway’s “geology” by showingthe depth and relative “fineness” ofasphalt used in paving 66 over theyears. In the background is anenlarged portion of an ArizonaHighway Department map from1953 that shows the course ofRoute 66 across Arizona in its finalpre-Interstate 40 form.Left (below) is a prototype signcreated by the Arizona Highwaydepartment to designate stretchesof historic Route 66 still in use inArizona. The sign design wasadopted, but the final sign productlooks quite different (see the signvisible in the Preservation displaycase).
