Southern Illinois University Edwardsville SBP Self-StudyBACKGROUND and EXECUTIVE SUMMARYSouthern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE), located in southern Illinois, just 25 miles from St. Louis, MO, wasfounded in 1957. The university was established by a group of concerned parents and citizens to provide publichigher education for citizens living in the Metro-east area of greater St. Louis. Today, the SIUE campus is home to adiverse student body of 14,000. The Public Health program is housed in the Department of Applied Health in theSchool of Education, Health & Human Behavior at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, is part of the Illinois public university system. Southern Illinois Universityis a premier Metropolitan University, offering a broad choice of degrees and programs ranging from liberal arts toprofessional studies. Undergraduate and graduate degrees are offered in the arts and sciences, business,education, engineering, and nursing. Professional degrees are available in dental medicine and pharmacy.Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is a student-centered educational community dedicated tocommunicating, expanding and integrating knowledge. In a spirit of collaboration enriched by diverse ideas, ourcomprehensive and unique array of undergraduate and graduate programs develops professionals, scholars andleaders who shape a changing world.Since submission of our application, several changes have occurred with the department and the program. In theinterim, we added a new program, Speech Pathology and Audiology, to the department. This was the result ofrealignment in another department within the School of Education, Health & Human Behavior. To better reflectthe programs now in the department, the department name has been changed from Kinesiology and HealthEducation (KHE) to Applied Health (AH). Our department is now the Department of Applied Health to betterencompass all programs in the department at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including Public Health,Exercise Science, Speech Pathology and Audiology, Exercise and Sports Psychology, Nutrition, and PhysicalEducation and Coaching Pedagogy. We currently have about 500 students enrolled in these programs.More recently, the Health Education program name change was approved. The program is now Public Health. Wewill start admitting majors under the new name in Fall 2016. Along with the program name change, theabbreviation for courses has changed as well. Under the Health Education program course titles started with theabbreviation HED. This has now changed to PBHE under the new Public Health Program.The Public Health Program (the Program) has been established for more than 20 years. It started as a healtheducation program with both school health and community health. A few years ago, the Program transitioned to acommunity health only program with a high emphasis on public health to meet the increasing demand for publichealth professionals in the community and the state. The Program has a diverse group of faculty and students. Itnow offers both a major and a minor in public health. Enrollment has continued to grow every semester: morethan 20% growth since 2015.Since our initial application, we have experienced some faculty changes. We lost one of our tenure track facultymembers, Dr. Dayna Henry, who took a position at another institution. And we lost a full time instructor whodecided to return to practice. We are current searching to fill two tenure track faculty positions that will teachsolely in the public health program. These two tenure track positions will better allow us to meet the demands ofa growing public health program. Both positions are scheduled to start Fall 2017.One of the newest changes is that we submitted the application to start a new Master of Public Health Program.Dean Lox of the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior, as well as other Deans across the university,have enthusiastically supported the application. The application is currently with the Provost of the GraduateSchool and the Graduate Curriculum Council for approval. Once approved, the application will be sent to theChancellor for approval and then to the Illinois Board for Higher Education. It is expected that the first cohortwould be admitted in Fall 2018.Page d
