COURSE DESCRIPTIONThis comprehensive 1.5 day continuing medical education (CME) program in functionalneurosurgery features an outstanding faculty from the Departments of Neurosurgery,Neurology, and Psychiatry at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Thepurpose of the course is to provide an update on the multidisciplinary management ofpsychiatric disease, epilepsy, and movement disorders. There will be specific emphasison the FDA-approved indications of deep brain stimulation (DBS) as well as emergingindications for DBS, such as depression and epilepsy. Alternative treatments, includingperipheral nerve stimulation and noninvasive modulation with transcranial magneticstimulation (TMS) will also be discussed. The final didactic segment of the course willbriefly review the development of novel neural interfaces for therapeutic interventions. To conclude, we are happy to offer a hands-on component of the course during whichattendees will be able to practice DBS programming skills and try to control a cursorusing an actual brain-computer interface device.TARGET AUDIENCENeurosurgeons, Neurologists (general and movement disorder), Psychiatrists,Psychologists, Allied-health professionals, Neurosurgical residents and fellows.COURSE OBJECTIVESAt the conclusion of this activity, participants should be better able to:1. Understand indications, outcomes, and risks of deep brain stimulation formovements disorders2. Understand the postoperative management of patients with deep brainstimulators3. Review emerging indications for deep brain stimulation, including epilepsyand psychiatric indications4. Appreciate the multidisciplinary approach to the management ofneuropsychiatric diseaseACCREDITATIONThe Office of Continuing Medical Education, David Geffen School of Medicine atUCLA is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education toprovide continuing medical education for physicians. The Office of Continuing Medical Education, David Geffen School of Medicine atUCLA designates this educational activity for a maximum of 10 AMA PRA Category1 CreditsTM. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of theirparticipation in the activity. This CME activity meets the requirements, under California Assembly Bill 1195,continuing education and cultural and linguistic competency.DisclosureThe FDA has issued a concept paper which classifies commercial support of scientific andeducational programs as promotional unless it can be affirmed that the program is ”truly independent” and free ofcommercial influence.
