It links us with our HolyFather in Rome and to pilgrims in Christ strugglingin third world countries and people of the SouthWest. The lovely liturgy starts with an invitation then abeautiful hymn, followed by psalms, scripturereadings, antiphons and intercessions. They are allwonderfully co-ordinated in the liturgical themes ofthe year following a four-week cycle of psalms withscripture readings from the Old Testamentprophecies to the birth of Christ. Here we can follow his ministry of teachings andmiracles through to the pascal mystery of hisDeath, Resurrection, Ascension to Heaven and thecoming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and specialdays like Corpus Christi. Our Lady and our wonderful saints and mentorsfrom the past.A FORETASTE OF HEAVENLY GLORYThe Trinity features well in the liturgy, ‘Glory be tothe Father, Son and Holy Spirit’ ending almostevery psalm. Every Hour has intercessions askingChrist for worldwide salvation or for our ownpersonal prayers to Our Lord and Father. The mystery of the Eucharist permeates andtransfigures each day in the liturgy of the Hours. They are a foretaste of the heavenly gloryextending through the day and sanctifying it,fortifying us with spiritual energy. If you don't have a Roman Breviary, just downloadthe app or click onto Universalis.com and you caneasily choose the Prayers for the Day, MorningPrayer, Small Hours or Evening Prayer. Pray inyour own private space at home, or in your ‘innercloister’ on the bus to work or at lunchtime!Join a church group for Morning and EveningPrayer (Vespers) or, perhaps, make a new groupwith friends or pray with a family member. It’s lovelyto have a prayer partner with whom to say theresponses. There are also other versions of theBreviary, like Celtic prayers which empathise withthe Trinity.DAILY PRAYER IN HONOUR OF MARYFor example, The Syon Breviary is very beautifuland one of the most ancient. It is ‘The Daily Officeof Our Lady’ and is a simple weekly cycle of dailyprayer in honour of Mary, the Holy Mother of God.This unique breviary has been approved for ourprivate use by our Bishop Mark O’Toole and all hispredecessors. Particularly because it has been thedaily office for over 600 years of the BridgettineSisters of Syon Abbey who settled near SouthBrent in this diocese. Now published in English forthe first time, it is available from the BuckfastAbbey bookshop or online. On St Patrick’s Day, March 17th, there will be aspecial opportunity to find out more of the history ofSyon Abbey and to sing parts of the Syon Vespersat St Mary’s Church, Dartington. Details on theSyon Breviary website at www.syonbreviary.co.ukSo as St Paul encourages us in 1 Thess. 5:16-18:“Rejoice and pray continuously, give thanks in allcircumstances, for this is the will of God in ChristJesus for you.”Don’t delay take up your breviary this Lent!Joy Hanson, Student, School of the Annunciation,Buckfast Abbey.Lunch for Parishionersin FalmouthThe Office is punctuated with the feasts of the year,Solemnities of Our Lord and those associated withA lunch was held recently for those within theParish who are living on their own. To be happy is to stop feeling like avictim and become your destiny's author. It is tocross deserts, yet to be able to find an oasis in thedepths of our soul. It is to thank God for everymorning, for the miracle of life. Being happy is notbeing afraid of your own feelings. It's to be able totalk about you. It is having the courage to hear a"no". It is confidence in the face of criticism, evenwhen unjustified. It is to kiss your children, pamperyour parents, to live poetic moments with friends, even when they hurt us.To be happy is to let live the creature that lives ineach of us, free, joyful and simple. It is to havematurity to be able to say: "I made mistakes". It isto have the courage to say, "I am sorry". It is tohave the sensitivity to say, "I need you". It is tohave the ability to say, "I love you". May your lifebecome a garden of opportunities for happiness. That in spring may it be a lover of joy. In winter, alover of wisdom. And when you make a mistake, start all over again. For only then will you be inlove with life. You will find that to be happy is notto have a perfect life. But use the tears to irrigatetolerance. Use your losses to train patience. Useyour mistakes to sculptor serenity. Use pain toplaster pleasure. Use obstacles to open windowsof intelligence. Never give up. Never give up onpeople who love you. Never give up on happiness, for life is an incredible show. This was thefulfilment of a promise they made justover a year ago when they bothcame here to commission me ashead teacher.“St Edward’s has always had achapel, but the existing one doesn’taccommodate a whole class, so wedecided to convert a classroom intoa chapel.“On Wednesday, the new chapelspent its last day as a modern foreignlanguages room. People have beenworking hard to install the Christiansymbols which will mark it out as aplace of prayer.“This original will become a chapel oflegacy and foundation, to rememberall those students who epitomisewhat St Edwards is about. The Rt Revd Nicholas Holtam,Bishop of Salisbury, said:“It is a particular delight that BishopMark and I are blessing the newchapel in this week, as St Edward’sis an ecumenical school in everysense.“St Edward’s embraces not onlydifferent Christian traditions, but as acomprehensive, it teaches children ofall abilities, maintaining academicexcellence in doing so.”The Rt Revd Mark O’Toole, Bishop ofPlymouth, added:“As we recall the prayer of Jesus thatall his disciples be one, I amdelighted to be here at St Edward’sSchool during this Week of Prayer forChristian Unity.“It is good to be able to celebrate theJoint Service with Bishop Nicholasand to bless the new chapel. StEdward’s rightly has a strongreputation for academic excellenceand it is good to see that its deepChristian spirit pervades the wholeschool.”

PROFILES 8 - Catholic South WestMarch 2018A fascinating insight into the role of:Diocesan Archivist ALTHOUGH MANY OF us may be unaware of it,each diocese in this country houses an excitingcollection of records, artefacts, photographs andvarious memorabilia from its parishes. I wasprivileged to be given an in-depth tour of thePlymouth Diocesan Archives by Sister BenignusO’Brien. In her role for over ten years, sheexplained her day-to-day routine and work in thisremarkable place SOMETHING NEWTaking over from Father Chris Smith over a decadeago, Sister Benignus was faced with the enormousand absorbing task of categorising, sorting, cleaning and archiving the thousands ofdocuments, icons and religious artefacts from thePlymouth Diocese. Originally located, albeittemporarily, at Buckfast Abbey, the archives werethen moved on a permanent basis to NewmanHouse in Exeter where a number of rooms –formerly offices – are now used to house the entirediocesan collection.Sister Benignus, who represents the Bishop at theArchives, explained that although some of the workcan be repetitive, the thrill of the job lies in thehistorical value of some of the precious items –some dating from as early as the 1300’s – and thefact that there ‘is something new every day.’ In fact, she states that unlike most of us, she can’t wait toget back to work each Monday morning! Her dayto-daywork mainly consists of renovating,TThe LeavenCarmelite Secular Institutecataloguing and archiving documents under theappropriate headings and answering worldwideongoing enquiries by email and phone frominterested parties.TOURThe tour – which lasted approximately two hours –began with an examination of artefacts. The mostvaluable of these, the seal of Queen Elizabeth lwith her condemnation of Saint Cuthbert Maynewas accompanied by the saints own Bible, circa1500’s and a further array of historical treasuressuch as beautiful reliquaries, (containing relicsfrom various saints), a Bishop’s Mitre, engravedtrowels and mallets used when opening churchesand priories, a travelling priest’s missal (circa 1626)and an Ordo for administering the Sacraments, areto name but a few. The next five rooms werebursting at the seams with an incredible collectionof historical ecclesiastical documents. Bishops’records including photographs, Catholic Bishopsconference of England and Wales and seminariesand formation were contained in the first room, withrare books and sacramental records from parishesfilling the shelves of the second room. Roomsthree, four and five contained legal administration, diocesan resources, diocesan commissions andpastoral issues, religious orders and schools, colleges and chaplaincy records. It would bedifficult to envisage a better organised yet vastselection of ecclesiastical documents.Don'tmiss outonAdvertisingCALLING ALLSingle and widowed womenSeeking to dedicate their life to GodThrough vows in secular societyContact: The Secretary, The Leaven,c/o The Friars, Aylesford ME20 7BXTel: 01883 742488Email: kinman@ouvip.comWebsite: www.theleaven.org.ukBook youradvert nowPlease note thedeadline foradvertising is the 10th ofeach monthTelephone01440 730399BREATH-TAKINGFinally, we came to the last two rooms which SisterBenignus willingly admitted were her own personalfavourites. These contained some of the mostbreath-takingly beautiful clerical vestments thatcould be imagined – and all remarkably wellpreserved. Some of these fantastic garments dateas far back as the 17th century with – incredibly –an orphrey (a large material cross, beautifullyembroidered and decorated, which embellishesthe back of a chasuble, a priests liturgicalvestment), which has a provenance of 1335. It’salso worth mentioning that some of these garmentsowe their present magnificent condition to theministrations of Sister Benignus, a talentedneedlewoman! After this fascinating morning at the DiocesanArchives I was left to ponder on what I had seenand heard. The Archives has been described as ‘asacred museum’ and I feel this description is apt. Ican only be thankful that such a vast amount of ourCatholic Church history has been retained andthank God for the work and talents of ourarchivists.Julia Beacroft

BLOWING IN THE WINDMarch 2018IN COMMON WITH many young children, I had avivid and expressive imagination which especiallycame to the fore during play times.
