UNIT 22Session 1Use Week of:Parable of the Sower1Matthew 13:1-9,18-23MAIN POINT: Not everyone who hears the gospel believes it.KEY PASSAGE: Mark 6:34BIG PICTURE QUESTION: Why did Jesus tell parables? Jesus told parables toteach people about God and His kingdom.BIBLE PASSAGE:SMALL GROUP OPENINGLARGE GROUP BIBLE STUDY SMALL GROUP ACTIVITIES(10–15 MINUTES)(25–30 MINUTES)(25–30 MINUTES)PAGE 10PAGE 12PAGE 18Leader BIBLE STUDYThe Gospels record dozens of Jesus’ parables. A parable isa story Jesus told to help people understand the kingdomof God. Each parable taught a lesson and revealed secretsof God’s kingdom for those who would understand.(See Matt. 13:10-13.)The parable of the sower would have resonated with thoselistening because they would have been familiar with thepractice of sowing or planting seed. But the parable had adeeper meaning. It contained a lesson about God’s Wordand the responses of those who hear it.In the parable, a sower’s seeds fell in four different places.6Older Kids Leader GuideUnit 22 Session 1 2016 LIfeWay

Some of the seeds fell along the path, where they were eatenby birds. Other seeds fell on rocky ground. Those seedshad no roots, so they withered in the sun. Other seeds fellamong thorns, and they were choked out. Other seeds fellon good soil, and they produced a crop—a hundred, sixty,or thirty times what was planted.1After Jesus told the parable, He explained it to His disciples. The soil represents people’s hearts, and the seed is the wordabout God’s kingdom. The person whose heart is like thehard soil hears the good news about God, but he does notunderstand it or he rejects it. The person whose heart is likethe rocky soil is quick to receive the truth, but when lifegets hard, he falls away. The person whose heart is like thethorny soil cares more about the things of the world thanthe good news about God, and the seed cannot grow. Theperson whose heart is like the good soil hears the good newsabout God and receives it. He bears fruit, more than whatwas planted. In the life of a believer, the fruit of the Spirit(Gal. 5:22-23) is evident.Still today, people respond to the gospel in various ways. Asyou prepare to teach the parable of the sower, pray for thekids you lead. Pray that God will give them receptive heartsso that they will hear, understand, and be changed by thegood news about Jesus.Additional resources for each session are available atgospelproject.com. In each place, He preached the good news aboutthe kingdom of God. Crowds of people came to listen toJesus’ teaching. One day, Jesus was sitting by the sea. Somany people came to hear Him that Jesus got into a boatand sat down to teach. The crowds stood on the shore tolisten.Jesus said, “A sower went out to plant seeds. As he wasplanting, some seeds fell along the path. Soon, the birdscame and ate up the seeds from the path. Other seeds fellon rocky ground where there wasn’t much soil. The seedssprouted quickly, but they did not have any roots becausethe soil was shallow. When the sun came up, the plantswithered. Other seeds fell among thorns. The thornsgrew, and they stopped the seeds from growing. Butsome of the seeds fell on good ground. Those seeds grewand produced a crop, more than what was planted!”Then Jesus explained the parable to His disciples. Hesaid, “Some people hear the truth about God’s kingdom, but they don’t understand it. The Evil One comes andtakes away what was planted in their hearts. Those peopleare like the seeds that fell on the path.“Some people hear the truth about God’s kingdom, and they are happy to accept it. But when hard timescome, they give up. [Remove backpack and retrieve the Bible.]Big picture question (1 minute) The Bible contains stories that tell us about God’splan to send Jesus to save people from sin. Did youknow that it also tells stories about stories? That’sright. Some of these Bible stories are about storiesJesus told. Jesus’ stories are called parables. As we hear them, let’s see if we can figure out theanswer to our big picture question: Why did Jesustell parables?LEADERGiant timeline (1 minute)Point to the giant timeline or big story circle.LEADER Check out the stories on our timeline. In Jesus’ story, when the man scattered the seedsin the field, they fell on four different types of soils. Can you name the four types? [Call on volunteers toanswer.] (the path, rocky ground, ground among thorns, good ground)Now, Jesus wasn’t giving the people a lesson infarming. It might have seemed that way, but Jesusused the stories He told to teach people what is trueabout God and His kingdom. The seed is like thetruth about God. Jesus explained that the seeds thatfell along the path are like people who hear the truthand do not understand it.If you tell them about Jesus, they might say, “Thatdoesn’t make any sense!”The seeds that fell on the rocky ground are likepeople who hear the truth and believe it right away, but when life gets hard, they stop believing. If you tell them about Jesus, they might like whatthey hear until something hard happens in their life, like pain or suffering. Then they might say, “I can’tbelieve in a God who would let this happen to me.”The seeds that fell among the thorns are likepeople who hear the truth, but they have a hard timebelieving because they worry about life instead oftrusting God.But the seeds that fell on the good soil are likepeople who hear the truth and believe it.If you tell them about Jesus, they might say,“What good news! I believe that Jesus is my Lordand Savior.” The truth changes their hearts, and theygrow to know and love Jesus.LEADER14Older Kids Leader GuideUnit 22 Session 1 2016 LIfeWay

Christ connection Jesus is the Sower who shared the truth aboutGod’s kingdom. People who hear the good newsabout Jesus respond in different ways. Not everyonewho hears the gospel believes it. Some reject Jesus, and some trust in Him. Jesus’ followers continue toshare the truth today, and those who understand andbelieve the gospel become more like Jesus.Did you know that everyone is born a sinner? Ourhearts are like hard, rocky, weed-infested soil. Godsoftens our hearts and breaks up the soil to make itfertile and open to the gospel. Then when we hearthe good news about Him, we are happy to believe itand trust in Jesus.LEADERTip: Use Scriptureand the guideprovided to explainhow to become aChristian. The Gospel: God’s Plan for MeAsk kids if they have ever heard the word gospel. Clarify that the word gospelmeans “good news.” It is the message about Christ, the kingdom of God,and salvation. Use the following guide to share the gospel with kids.God rules. Explain to kids that the Bible tells us God createdeverything, and He is in charge of everything. Invite a volunteer to readGenesis 1:1 from the Bible. Read Revelation 4:11 or Colossians 1:16-17 aloudand explain what these verses mean.We sinned. Tell kids that since the time of Adam and Eve, everyone haschosen to disobey God. (Romans 3:23) The Bible calls this sin. Because God isholy, God cannot be around sin. Sin separates us from God and deserves God’spunishment of death. (Romans 6:23)God provided. Choose a child to read John 3:16 aloud. Say that Godsent His Son, Jesus, the perfect solution to our sin problem, to rescue us fromthe punishment we deserve. It’s something we, as sinners, could never earn onour own. Jesus alone saves us. Read and explain Ephesians 2:8-9.Jesus gives. Share with kids that Jesus lived a perfect life, died on thecross for our sins, and rose again. Because Jesus gave up His life for us, we canbe welcomed into God’s family for eternity. This is the best gift ever! ReadRomans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:21; or 1 Peter 3:18.We respond. Tell kids that they can respond to Jesus. ReadRomans 10:9-10,13. Review these aspects of our response: Believe in your heartthat Jesus alone saves you through what He’s already done on the cross. Repent, turning from self and sin to Jesus. Tell God and others that your faith is in Jesus.Offer to talk with any child who is interested in responding to Jesus.Tip: Provide I’m a Christian Now for new Christians to take home andcomplete with their families.Jesus the Storyteller 2016 LIfeWay17

These divisions provide a handy-dandy way for us to trace what happens in the novel. We meet Lauren Olamina when she's growing up in Robledo, a fictional town in southern California.
