IC50Staying upNow in its 22nd year, andafter yet another 12 monthsin a world of uncertainty, the IC50 ranking of theworld’s largest crane-owningcompanies has done well toonce again maintain healthygrowth. ICST reportsAmore modest but still healthy risethat characterises the 2017 IC50 was, perhaps, to be expected this year. Itfits with the fact that most of the major cranemanufacturers have had a poor couple ofyears in terms of new crane sales and thisis now reflected in the IC50. The total fleetcapability (IC Index) for this year’s top 100companies is up by 6.1 per cent. While this isjust over half the 11.1 % increase seen lastyear, which was very close to the 11.8 % of theyear before, it is still a healthy and positivegrowth figure. Also up this year among the top 100companies is the number of depots, by4 %, to 1,516 from 1457 in 2016. All the othernumbers are down, however, starting withthe number of employees, down 5 % from238,455 to 226,514 in the top 100. The numberNettle Crane Hire from India is one of17 new entries this yearAustrian specialist contractorFelbermayr moves up oneplace to 30 this yearof wheeled mobile cranes is down nearly 3 %from 25,652 to 24,910. Lattice boom cranesin the top 100 are down 1.9 % from 6,761to 6,635.Fewer wheeled mobile cranes in the top100 has been a trend for the last few years butagainst that there has usually been an increasein the number of crawler cranes. As the overallcapability of the top 100 is still up this meansthat there is a trend towards fewer but largercranes, probably both of wheeled mobile andlattice cranes, rather than just lattice cranesgetting bigger as in previous years.Who is whereSo, to the results: Mammoet is at numberone for the 22nd time. Some changes standout this year. Mammoet has increased its ICIndex but has fewer cranes: in each category,by 19 %; wheeled mobiles from 1,204 unitsto 975; and lattice cranes, from 341 to 275.Mammoet said it has invested steadily in alarger proportion of high capacity cranes.Spokesperson Theo Kroese commented, “Thisis a result of our investment and innovationpolicy, which takes long term trends intoaccount – such as a continuously growingglobal demand for higher capacity cranes – aswell as mid-term market conditions.”While Sarens, Lampson, Sanghvi and AllErection retain the same places as last yearin the middle of the top ten, there has beensignificant change elsewhere in the top 10.Maxim moves up one place to 4th in the tableINTERNATIONAL CRANES AND SPECIALIZED TRANSPORT JUNE 2017»13

IC50Tara Chand is anothernew entry from Indiathis year, in at 111as a result of major acquisition activity (seebelow). It displaces ALE from third place. The UK-based super heavy lift and transportspecialist has maintained the same fleet sizefor the last few years. Making a significantleap into the top ten at 8 is Bigge Crane &Rigging which moves up four places from12. Anyone who has tracked the number oforders and handovers of new equipment atthe last Bauma and ConExpo shows will beunsurprised by this increase.Bigge displaces Tat Hong from Singaporedown one at 9th with an IC Index 11.4 % lowerthan 2016. The knock-on effect of Bigge’sentry into the top ten is that Weldex movesdown one to tenth. Moving out of the topten to 13th is Deep South Crane & Riggingwhich, despite increasing its Index, addedless capacity than Buckner or Prangl aboveit. Buckner has made a huge leap, up to 11from 25, increasing its fleet capability by 73 %from 245,557 to 425,677. While it added fivewheeled cranes, the real increase was latticecranes up from 84 to 131 units. Prangl alsoincreased its capability by a significant 13 %.Another major mover was Al Faris in theMiddle East which boosted its fleet capabilityby 51 % from 252,741 to 381,968. Others wellon the up included BMS in Denmark, SOP&Gin Russia, Integrated Logistics in Kuwait, andAertssen Kranen in Belgium.New lookNow some data on the table overall this year. While we focus on the top companies therewere 196 entries in total. It was good to see 17new entries, six of them in the top 100.The highest two of the new entries were asTHE BASKET OF 10Our basket of 10 companies sample thatwe have been running since 2009 hasbeen seriously upset this year in that threeof the companies in it, Maxim, AmQuipand Essex, have become one, reducingthe sample to eight companies. Almosteverything that we usually measure isdown, including the number of depots, thenumber of employees, both crane typesand the total capacity of the largest cranes. One remaining figure, however, is up: thetotal IC Index of those ten companies is upby just over 3 %. Next year we plan to starta new sample.a result of one company, Nordic Crane Group, splitting into two in July 2016. The 50:50owners, Kynningsrud AS and StangelandGruppen AS, established Nordic Crane Groupin 2008 and doubled the Group’s turnoverbut they said that despite strong growth, synergies were not the way they wanted andgeographical distance contributed to the factthat Nordic Crane Group did not make thebest use of resources. IC50Other ownership changes since last yearhave had further impact on the table. Mostnotable is Maxim’s acquisition of major UScrane-owning companies ERC (Essex Craneand Coast Crane) from position 20 andAmquip, at 43, in last year’s table. Maximbought the Essex crawler crane fleet inSeptember 2016, followed by Coast Crane inApril 2017.In 2016 Maxim’s owner, investment groupBKL inGermany, at113 in the table, also has alarge fleet oftower cranesPlatinum Equity, sold it to Apollo Capitalwhich also acquired AmQuip and merged thetwo companies as Maxim. Back in 2009 bothAmQuip and Essex were up in the top 10 of theIC50 ranking. In the 2016 IC50 Maxim’s 2015 acquisitionof Crane Rental Corporation boosted its ICIndex but insufficiently to change its positionin the table. This year, however, the latestacquisitions, including the large fleet of highcapacity crawler cranes from Essex, accountsfor Maxim’s one place gain in the table.UK-based Hewden, at position 110 inthe 2016 table, has disappeared this yearfollowing its closure and fleet sell-off earlierin 2017. Way back in June 1995 HewdenStuart Crane Hire, as it was called then, appeared in the very first IC50 ranking, in10th place.Other than Hewden and the companiesmentioned above that have been acquired, another 25 companies from last year weredropped, almost all of them outside the top 100, because of insufficient data.NOTES FOR IC50Companies are ranked by their IC Index, calculated as the total maximum load momentrating, in tonne-metres, of all cranes in a fleet. All companies in the list, plus otherprospective ones, have the opportunity to supply fleet information and other data for inclusionin the ranking. Where companies supply the full data the figure used is calculated by them.In some cases, where little data is submitted, or is incomplete, we have based a company’sequipment fleet figure on ICST estimates. In cases of insolvency, acquisition, or a consistentlack of information, companies are withdrawn from the table. While we make great effort to ensure the accuracy of information provided, it cannot beguaranteed and IC accepts no liability for inaccuracies or omissions. The IC50 Index will next be updated in the first quarter of 2018. If you think your companyshould be included please contact ICST for an application form. Note that tower cranes arenot in the main IC50 table here as they will appear separately in the special IC Tower Indexin the September issue of IC. Similarly, specialized transport equipment is also in a separateranking, the IC Transport50, in the August issue of the magazine.WHY DOES A ‘REMOVE AND REPLACE JOB’MEAN LESS OUTAGE DOWNTIME?We know that downtime is the bane of plant management’sexistence.
