IC50 2018Right trackIn its 23rd year the IC50ranking of the world’s largestA Mammoet Liebherr LR13000 crawler cranebeing prepared to lift a725 TE reactor on a GulfCoast job site. Tailingwas by a Demag CC 2800crawler crancrane-owning companiesis still showing positivedevelopment. ICST reportsAgain, the growth in the IC50 was by asmaller percentage than the previousyear (in 2017 it was 6.1 per cent) but2018’s table is still holding up well, showinga healthy increase of 5.48 % in the Top 100companies’ IC Index value.Almost everything else was also up inthe totals for the top 100 companies, otherthan the number of depots and employees.Last year the number of depots was up 4 %whereas this year it was down, albeit by just-0.46 %, or seven fewer depots. More of asurprise and a much bigger drop was a-14.4 % fall in the number of employees, from226,514 in 2017 to 193,826.In terms of the numbers of cranes in thetop 100, it was a turnaround for both typesfrom last year. Wheeled mobile cranes thisyear were up by 4.6 %, or 1,146 units on 2017when they were down -2.9 % or 742 units,on 2016. Similarly lattice boom cranes thisyear were up 1.9 %, or 128 units, on 2017,compared to a decline of 1.9 % or 126 units, the year before.Numbers of units in the ten largest fleetsof mobile cranes compared with 2017 werealso up. For wheeled cranes the total numberwas 10,431 units, up an impressive 8.6 %on the 9,608 total in 2017. For lattice boomcranes, the increase was smaller, up 0.5 %,from 3,297 to 3,314 units.Looking at the top 20 companies rankedby their IC Index, everything was up from lastyear. Wheeled mobile cranes were up 8.2 %or by an impressive 828 units, and latticecranes were up by 2.2 % or 85 units. Another1,071 employees were added to the top 20companies’ workforces, an increase of 3.5 %on 2017. Just two more depots were added bythe top 20 companies. That was a 0.4 % risecompared with 1.6 and 5.6 % increases in theprevious couple of years.Fewer wheeled mobile cranes in the top100 was a trend for several years while thenumber of lattice cranes was increasing. It isencouraging to see an increase in the numberof units for both types this year, in the top 100,in the top 20, in the top ten largest fleets andalso in the Basket of Ten (now Eight – see boxstory) sample.Where are they?In terms of position, from the top, Mammoetretains its number 1 slot where it has beenINTERNATIONAL CRANES AND SPECIALIZED TRANSPORT JUNE 2018»15

IC50 2018THE BASKET OF EIGHTFelbermayr subsidiary Bau-Trans used a pair of mobile cranes lifting in tandem to return the historicship MS Osterreich, built in 1928 and weighing 160 tonnes, to a slipway on an Austrian inlandwaterway. The 55 metre vessel was decommissioned in 2009 and almost scrappedevery year since the beginning. Sarens retainssecond place and has increased its capabilityby . Other non-movers in the top ten areLampson, Sanghvi Movers, All Erection, Bigge, and Weldex, in 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 10thplaces, respectively.Movers are UK-based ALE, up one placeto third, swapping again with Maxim, downone to 4th. Having kept its fleet the same forseveral years, ALE has suddenly increasedits capability by a whopping 40 %, now it hasfurther developed the range of AL.SK seriessuper heavy lifters. Buckner Heavy Lift Cranesis up two places into the top ten at 9th. Itdisplaces and changes position with Tat Hong, down to 11th, which has reduced its fleetcapability by 16 % in the last three years.Looking further down the table, notablemovers include Al Faris, up three placeshaving increased its capability by more thanLast year upset was caused to thelong-running Basket of Ten sample ofcompanies. It was due to one of them,Maxim, acquiring AmQuip and Essex, making it now the Basket of Eight. Thegroup was formed using the top tencompanies in the 2009 IC50 and has beenrunning ever since, tracking the changes.Last year it was planned to create anew group but now we will retain the eightand see how it pans out. The companiesare: Mammoet, Sarens, Lampson, SanghviMovers, All Erection, Tat Hong, Al Jaberand, of course, Maxim, now including Essexand AmQuip, following their acquisition inSeptember 2016 and April 2017.As it happens, all but two of thecompared totals are up from last year. There are 693 more employees, 736 morewheeled cranes and 10 more lattice cranes. The total IC Index is up 1.3 % from last yearto 11,323,468. That is up an enormous 80 %on the 6,294,798 total of the first Basketof Ten in 2009. The two lower totals are byminimal amounts; the number of depots, down by two, and the total capacity of thelargest cranes, down by just 278 tonnes.»CRANES FROM 10-5000TMAN TGX 33.540Sennebogen 5500 Star-LifterMercedes-Benz 3355 S E5 6x4(more units available)(more units available)(more units available)Grove GMK3055Liebherr LR1300 SXLiebherr LR1200 SXLiebherr MK80(more units available)Terex Demag CC2800(more units available)www.mammoetusedequipment.comTerex Demag AC500-2Grove GMK 6250 LMammoet Equipment B.V.Van Deventerlaan 30-403528 AE UtrechtThe Netherlands 31 (0)88 ipment.comINTERNATIONAL CRANES AND SPECIALIZED TRANSPORT JUNE 201821

IC50 201810 % in the last year. It has moved up nineplaces since 2016. Fagioli has climbed animpressive 20 places by heading towardsdoubling its IC Index as a result of addingto its lattice crane fleet. Aertssen Kranen inBelgium has made up four places to 40, evenwithout including its acquisition of Michielsens(133rd place) earlier in 2018, which for now,Aertssen says, will continue to be run as aseparate business. The overall total number of entries is upfor this year, to 213, as against 195 in 2017.The 2018 total combined IC Index for all 213companies is 27,876,281, up 6.2 % on 2017’stotal of 26,251,109. It is good to see 25 newentries in the total table, three of which arereturning entries. Most of them are fromthe USA and appear here as a result of hardwork by ICST sister title American Cranesand Transport for its ACT 100 listing. Notable, however, is that one is from Myanmar, another from Kuwait, one from Brazil, another from Turkey and Canada. The highestnew entry, at 74, is Mr Crane from the USA,followed by Jassim Transport and Stevedoringfrom Kuwait at 82. Close are Joyce Crane at90 and Laramie, a returning entry, at 97, bothfrom the USA. So that is four in the top 100. All companies in the list, plus other prospectiveones, have the opportunity to supply fleet information and other data for inclusion in theranking. Where companies supply the full data the figure used is calculated by them. In somecases, where no data is submitted, or is incomplete, we have based a company’s equipmentfleet figure on an ICST estimate. In cases of insolvency, acquisition or lack of information, companies are withdrawn from the table. While we make great effort to ensure the accuracy of information provided, it cannot beguaranteed and ICST accepts no liability for inaccuracies or omissions. The IC50 Index will next be updated in the first quarter of 2019. If you think your companyshould be included please contact ICST for an application form. Note that tower cranes arenot in the main IC50 table here because they appear separately in the special IC Tower Indexpublished in the September issue of ICST. Similarly, specialized transport equipment is alsofeatured in a separate ranking, the IC Transport50, in the August issue of the magazine.1968196822018OF BUILDING@MorrowEquipment:22INTERNATIONAL CRANES AND SPECIALIZED TRANSPORT JUNE 2018
