From a small shop onCleveland Ohio’s west side to our high-techfactory in Gainesville, Georgia, Harris Historyis as impressive as the products we produce.HARRIS CALORIFIC CO., a pioneer in theproduction of gas welding and cuttingapparatus was founded by John Harris, whodiscovered the oxy-acetylene method ofcutting in 1899 while conducting research onthe manufacture of synthetic rubies. Hisdiscovery led to the manufacture of thenation's first flame-cutting torch.After exhibiting his cutting torch at the 1904St. Louis World's Fair, he established thecompany in 1905. Harris continued to refineits gas torches and began to produce relatedaccessories, such as gas pressureregulators. The U.S. Welding Co. ofMinnesota purchased Harris in 1926. U.S.2Welding's founder, Lorne Campbell, Jr.,served as President until the 1950's whenClarence Taylor assumed the position.After World War II, the company found newmarkets for its products in rs. Under Clarence Taylor,Harris expanded national distribution,developed new equipment, stepped upadvertising, and established subsidiariesand distributorships abroad.By 1963 the company began to diversify intothe area of anesthesia equipment formedical purposes at its new plant on CassAvenue in Cleveland, Ohio.Harris Calorific was acquired by theEmerson Electric Co. of St. Louis, Missouri in1973 and expanded its domestic andEuropean facilities and markets. The Model 18-5 automatic torch handle features an exclusive gas controlsystem to reduce operating costs and to improve safety and convenience.The thumb operated on/off gas control and adjustable pilot light eliminaterelighting and flame readjustment each time the torch is used. The 18-5on/off feature can be used for cutting, welding and brazing with all fuelgases. The pilot light feature is only recommended for oxy-acetylene welding and brazing.
