All Souls Catholic Church 220th Sunday in Ordinary Time"O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as youwish." This woman was an outsider. She was a Canaanite, not anIsraelite, and as such she would have been considered rituallyunclean. But she approached Jesus nonetheless and asked for hishelp. And Jesus used this opportunity to teach his disciples animportant lesson. In the verses directly before today's passage, Jesus had toldPeter that what defiles a person comes from the heart, not fromignoring external purity practices. Then, Jesus traveled with hisdisciples from Galilee to the region of Tyre and Sidon where theywere much more likely to encounter someone considered to beunclean. At first it appeared that Jesus wasn't going to acknowledge thewoman who begged for help. His comment, "It is not right to takethe food of the children and throw it to the dogs," was a commoncomparison between Jews (the children) and Canaanites (thedogs). But, in fact, Jesus said this only to go right ahead and breakthis social code! He showed by his actions that it did not matterwhether someone was Jewish or not, what mattered was the faithin a person's heart. And this woman proved to Jesus and thedoubting disciples that she had great faith. How many otherswould have even approached Jesus to ask for his help? How manyothers would have persevered when he appeared unresponsive?By pausing in his response, and first mentioning the standard reply,Jesus gave this woman the opportunity to demonstrate her greatfaith. And then, he answered her request and praised herextraordinary faith. What a lesson for his prejudiced disciples! Andwhat a lesson for us, both to persevere in faith, and never to judgeothers on mere appearances.LPI, Inc.T h e S a c r a me n t sThe Sacrament of Reconciliation: Confessions are heard each week onSaturday at the Church (SR #46) from 3:45pm to 4:45pm Learn moreabout this beautiful sacrament by visiting our website:www.allsoulssanford.org/reconciliationThe Sacrament of Baptism: Call the parish office to learn the necessaryrequirements and make an appointment with Father Kenneth Metz tohave your child baptized. Those who have never been baptized look forward tothe sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. TheBaptism of those from other Christian traditions is deeplyrespected. In their case, preparation leads to Confirmation andEucharist as they enter into full communion with the CatholicChurch. Baptized Catholics who have not yet receivedconfirmation and First Communion may also prepare for thesacraments through this process.Father Ken Metz will soon begin classes for those interestedin becoming Catholic or completing their sacraments onTuesday, August 22nd at 7:00pm in the TRC classroom of AllSouls Catholic School. I don't approve of what he did, but he is a great neighborand a nice person. How should I treat someone like him?Answer: There is a litany of expressions that fit this situation:Everyone makes mistakes. Hate the sin, love the sinner. Judge not, lestyou be judged. All of these proverbs and sayings highlight the fact thatwe are here to help each other on the way to salvation. Our hope andgoal is that everyone grows in grace, drawing closer to God and to thepromise of eternal life. Part of that process is our struggle, collectivelyand individually, with sin. And that is the ugly part. Sin is not nice, pretty,or inviting when laid out for all to see. Nor is it easy for the personcaught in the spotlight.Kindness and support are not the same thing as approval. Werecognize that good people can do bad things and in their struggle, theyneed the help of others. Our kindness is often the flicker of hope thatallows someone to face the consequences of sin while focusing on thepromise of redemption. Your desire to help and support your neighbor isthe response of grace to sin, and the same response of Jesus to us.LPI, Inc .The Sanctuary Light in our Historic Chapel burns this week in lovingmemory of Armando Perez-Leefmans, as requested by the PerezKoeneke Family.
