13 iviarch 1990Dear Lorraine:We corresponded last summer, and you ask for Frantz data, well,I finally got around to putting it together. Sorry to be so slow.I would welcome corrections or additions, especially on the last3 generations of Frantz, Adam, Geo Adam, and Baltzer.I have a copy of Adam Frantz's war record/pension application,if you are interGste4IthatIwi11 make you a copy. No wifeor children are named. But it is interesting. So how is your Frantz book coming along? Wish I had more factsand stories to share. I am sending along 2 pages from the ShonkHistory. This was written in 1982. This will give you a littlebackground of Martha Magdalena Frantz and their migration to IN.They came to Owen County in 1855 and Jacob died that fall. Iread the probate records and Magdalena tried to hold all the landbut without a will she got 1/3 and the children 2/3. It was settledin 1858. One brother sold his share to his brothers or sisters andreturned to Ohio.Good Luck with your books and cemetery publication. Let me hearfrom you again.Sincerely,4*1--e- --MRS. GENEALOGY OF MARTHA MAGDALENA FRANCE ( FRANTZ)THE WIFE OF JACOB SI-IONKIn 1732, Ulrich Shirk, with six Sons and two daughters, camefrom Switzerland to find a home in the New World. They landedat Philadelphia, and went to the vicinity of Lancaster, wherethey remained for a year. In 1733 three of the sons, Ulrich,Casper, and John, with their father, Ulrich, settled in thevicinity of Schoeneck, this township, taking up about fifteenhundred acres of land. Of the other three sons - Michael, Joseph, and Peter - one settled near New Holland, one along the Conestoga, and the other near Mount Joy. Of the two daughters nothing isknown.Ulrich Shirk, who came with his father, Ulrich, was bornA.D. 1711, died 1763. He was married to Annie Swar in 1735.(Her mothers maiden name was Adaline Lawrence, and came fromFrance) She was born in 1720 and died in 1810. Ulrich Shirkreared a family of three sons and seven daughters, Ulrich, David,Michael, Elizabeth, Barbara, Annie, Kate, Magdalena, SALLIE,and Maria.Adam Frantz, born September 6, 1755 in Cocalico Township,Lancaster County Pennsylvania. There was a will probated onNovember 17, 1770 at the Lancaster court house of Abram Frantzwho had a wife named Ann Maria and two sons, Abraham and Adam. This could be our Adam.In his pension application, Adam tells of his Revolutionaryservices and that he was at the historic crossing of the Delawarewith George Washington. In 1787 he moved from Cocalico Township to Windsor Township,York County. He lived there for over'thirteen years, thenmoved to Washington County Pennsylvania then to TuscarawasCounty Ohio.He was married to Sallie Shirk about 1781 or 1782 and diedin December of 1834. Sallie was the daughter of the abovenamed Ulrich Shirk.Adam and Sallie reared nine childrent Adam Jr. , John,David, MARTHA MAGDALENA, Sarah, Mary, Hannah, Katie, and Eve.On June 3, 1819 Martha Magdalena married Jacob Shonk. Thisunion was the beginning of our Shonk family.OTE& The name Frantz - France. The original spelling wasFrantz but after moving to Tuscarawas County, Ohio it wasusually spelled France.11

There was a large Shank family that first settled in theLancaster - Dauphin County, Pennsylvania area. There was oneMichael Shank family that some people think could be the forerunner to our Shonk family, but we made several trips to thatarea and did extensive research on his family. We got muchinformation but no evidence that it was cur family. Now, getting back to our Jacob Shonk family. We have noevidence where Jacob and Madalena lived when they were firstmarried but they purchased 80 acres of land on what is nowSugarcreek Township road 363. They made additional purchasesin the next couple of years until they had a large farm.Part of this land is what we remember as the Shank farm whichstayed in the family for three generations.Jacob and Magdalena raised ten children on this farm. Lateron they got the urge to move to Indiana. In the fall of 1854they sold most of their land to a son, Jacob Jr. and the restof the land to a son in law, Jonathan Auman. In the spring of1855, Jacob, his wife and the eight youngest children andtheir families (some were married at that time) headed west.Perhaps there was a wagon train as we have evidence that manyother people moved from the Tuscarawas County, Ohio area toOwen County, Indiana in the 1855 area.Jacob bought a farm near Patricksburg, Owen County and themarried children also purchased land in that area at the sametime. Jacob died in the fall of that same year, 1855, and isburied in the Dutch Bethel Cemetery in Arney, south of Patricksburg. His wife, Magdalena died in 1861 and is buried in theBeech Cemetery, a few miles west of Patricksburg. All the children remained there except Henry, and many oftheir descendants still reside in that area. Henry sold hisfarm in Indiana in 1858 and returned to Ohio and bought landnear the original Shank farm.Susanna, the oldest child of Jacob and Magdalena Shonk wasmarried to Jonathan Auman. They at first owned an 80 acrefarm that joined the south edge of the Shonk farm which theysold to Jacob Shonk Jr. in 1850 and then settled on a largefarm on the Dover-Winfield road where they spent the rest oftheir lives.Jacob Shonk Jr. the second child of Jacob and Magdalena(France) Shank who bought the Shonk farm when the familymoved to Indiana, was married to Nancy Silvius and they spenttheir entire life on that farm. We will give you an accountof the will of Jacob Shonk Jr. It may be a bit dull for manyof you to read this that are not in the direct family ofJacob Jr. but we feel that we must present it in order tofinish the story of what finally happened to the Shonk farm.5
