Simon SaysJesus began with people, not with meetings and services. It comes as ashock! He started where people were and His ministry was built onrelationships, his relationship to the Father and then to others whom theFather led him to Jesus' closest followers echoed this ministry. It's worthnoting the two names given to them.Firstly, disciples which simply means 'lear ner s' . They lear nt by beingclose to Jesus, by being in his company. It would be fascinating to askPeter during Jesus' ministry what his job was. I think he would just pointat Jesus and say, 'I just follow ‘him’ round.'Secondly, apostles which means ‘sent out’. After being with J esus theywere sent out to continue Jesus' ministry. We may not apply these terms to ourselves but I do think they saysomething important about our evangelism; the way in which we speak ofGod to others through the way we speak and act. Firstly, we need to bewith Jesus nourishing our relationship with him both on our own and withothers, but doing that knowing that we are also being sent out into theworld we inhabit to continue Jesus' ministry of seeking and saving the lost(Luke 19:10).Also like Jesus our evangelism, as Churches and individuals, needs to bebased on real relationships with those around us. Think about howmistrustful we are of any 'cold caller' at the door, on the phone or on thestreet. What's the problem? Simply we don't know them. But we willlisten to those we know who we trust and who we feel have integrity. From the TV series, those known as the 'Friends' generation, there is adistrust of authority but a desire for authenticity. They will not believebecause 'the church tells them to' but because of the impact of the lives ofChristians that they come into contact with. I remember the former Bishopof Pontefract, John Finney, showed in his research that people startfollowing Jesus mostly because of relationships they have with Christians.Think of the many relationships you have (not just close friendships) at8

work, socially, in your neighbourhood, through common interests orsports, at the school gate or the community centre. Here surely is the heartof our and the churches evangelistic ministry. It's the places where we arewith people. Finally, there are three simple steps in relational evangelism.1 Prayer. This r eminds us that evangelism ultimately is God's wor knot ours. We are called to be faithful witnesses but the life changer is onlyGod himself. I would encourage you to pray for those around you at work, home, socially, etc. I find it helpful to write names down and pray forthem daily or weekly (see Colossians 4:2-3) Pray for Opportunities tomeet people and to develop relationships.2 Care. People ar ound us ar e cr eated by God and special to Him andhopefully to us. They are not just people we are interested in because theymight join our church. We need to show them God's love often before wecan ever talk about them. Also we need to show that our relationship withthem is not dependent on them coming to church.3 Share. We ar e called to say something of the God we know. God isnot asking us to be the next Billy Graham but to be ourselves and saysimply what we know of Him. It may be at first simply saying we are afollower of Jesus and go to a local church at an appropriate point. It isamazing how saying something about what we believe makes us prayeven more.'Most of those who come into Christian discipleship do so through theeveryday life and witness of friends and not through the visiting celebrity.’Bishop Cohn BennettAgain I pose the questions: “When did you last invite someone to aspecial church service or event where the gospel was being celebrated insome way? Who could you invite next time?”Look at our diary and you will see such opportunity over the next monthto relate to others and to God.Simon9

Christmas JokesAn atheist complained to a Christian friend, "YouChristians have your special holidays, such asChristmas and Easter. Jews celebrate theirnational holidays, such as Passover and YomKippur. But we atheists have no recognizednational holidays. It's unfair discrimination."His friend replied, "Why don't you celebrate Aprilfirst?"A lady lost her handbag in the bustle ofChristmas shopping. It was found by an honestlittle boy and returned to her. Looking in her purse, she commented,"Hmmm. That's funny. When I lost my bag there was a 20 note in it.Now there are twenty 1 coins."The boy quickly replied, "That's right, lady. The last time I found a lady'spurse, she didn't have any change for a reward."12

A Note About the LYCIG ConferenceLYCIG stands for “Leading Your Church into Growth” and was aconference that the two Simons and two wardens attended at the beginningof November at the Church Conference Centre in Swanwick, Derbyshire. We felt that it was important to give feedback about this event to our churchfamily as a starting point to further work which we shall be looking at as achurch over the next few months. This is to build on work that the Stewardshipgroup and PCC had done during Marion’s time with us, but not to cover oldground. The course began on the Monday evening with an introduction and over ninesessions detailed many aspects of “growing the Church”. It concluded on theThursday morning with a Eucharist ending with us taking lighted candles out ofthe chapel and into the world as we were commissioned to help grow the Church. We all enjoyed the course, the fellowship and the many conversations we hadwith other clergy and lay people. The course was led by many inspirationalspeakers, who had been involved in successfully growing their own churchesboth spiritually and in numbers, and who had many ideas and thoughts about theissues involved. It was clear to us all that we have been working along the right lines for sometime and that we felt that there was much to celebrate in this respect at St Peter’s.Examples include our style of worship and music, holding a variety of types ofservice on a Sunday and during the week, our welcome and the fact that ourchurch is open during the weekdays for anyone who wants to come in and spendsome time out of the hurly burly of modern life. Hosting on a Saturday is alsosomething we should be proud of. Those of us who host will be aware of thevariety of conversations we have with our visitors during our hosting sessions. The very successful “pop up shop” has also put the church “on the map” in thetown itself, not to mention the contact we have made with all sorts of people andthe funds raised. Our coffee mornings and fayres are examples of us having apresence in the town centre. One of the sessions was to look at developing a plan for growth and embedded inthis session was a useful aide memoire which is worth sharing. It was describedas the “4 Ps”.Prayer: this suggested that all of us should pr ay for gr owth and ther e is aprayer below which we ask that you use in your own prayers.16

Presence: having a pr esence in the town as a chur ch and as individuals.Proclamation: this concer ns us being able to pr oclaim the Good News at ourservices and other events which we host.Persuasion: this is about becoming mor e committed to a Chr istian life andgrowing spiritually in the church. We would like the whole congregation to think on these points and pray aboutthem. There will be other work being done by the PCC and Stewardship group tosupport this initiative and we ask that you “watch this space”.Mike Bembridge. Our four musketeers at the LYCIG conferenceA Prayer For GrowthO God who alone brings growth to your Church,Send your Holy Spirit to giveVision to our planning,Wisdom to our actions,And power to our witness.Help our church to grow in numbers,Commitment to you,And in service to our local community,Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen17

CrucifixionPietaART EXHIBITIONBetween Wednesday 6 January and Monday 8 February, Huddersfield Parish Churchwill be hosting an exhibition for Emma J. Horsfield. Her paintings are modern, vibrantand draw us into the life of Jesus Christ, his life and ministry. While studying for a BA (Hons) Illustration, academic research into renaissance andmedieval art served as initial inspiration for Emma, to further study the Biblical themesartists of this era often illustrated. She now attends Church and studies the Bible andChristian theology as well as engaging in various community projects. She alsocontinues to work on her degree course, book illustration commissions and fine art whilebringing up a large family.Further, inspiration comes to Emma from Christian iconography, Medieval design, architecture, historic events, illuminated manuscripts and humanitarian affairs. She isparticularly drawn to the ideologies of Morris and Pugin and their valuing of the handrendered and individual as this reflects her own way of working. This exhibition focuses on telling a visual narrative of the life of Jesus withaccompanying books (for children and grown-ups) offering an insight which can appealto all visitors. A recently completed large addition to the exhibition, 'The Last Supper'will also be part of the exhibition at Huddersfield Parish Church. The exhibition has already toured many other venues in the last year, including RiponCathedral, Selby Abbey, Wakefield Cathedral, Beverley Minster amongst others, andwill continue touring in 2016.19

Town Centre Chaplaincy TodayThis is a very stressful time of year if you work in the shops.Planning for the Christmas season was well underway in August andgoods began to arrive in our shops in September. In fact theChristmas decorations are already up in some larger stores becauseit takes so long to put them up! You may well have noticed thatstaffing levels are much lower than they used to be as companiesseek to maximise their profits and staff are the most expensiveresource. So spare a thought for the workers who are doing longerhours over the next few months and who are highly likely to only getone day off over Christmas – Christmas Day! You may also want tobrowse round and encourage the many new businesses which havebeen set up in town some of them in the Byram Arcade, Market Walkand Queensgate Market. In fact a national day has been set aside toencourage this - Small Business Saturday which is on 5th December, when a few events will happen in town.Since our faith has a strong emphasis on social justice, I thought itmight be helpful to clarify some information on the minimum wage.So currently, for those 21 and over, the minimum wage is 6.70 perhour. (For those who are 18-20 it’s 5.30, under 18 is 3.87,apprentices is 3.30). The Joint public issues team of Baptist,Church of Scotland, Methodist and United Reformed churches andthe Living Wage Foundation have been calling for a Living Wage for38

many years now and they are currently calling for 7.85. (All layemployees of the Methodist Church must now be paid a minimum ofthis rate). The Living Wage is calculated according to the basic costof living and requires someone to be able to live on it. A new ‘NationalLiving Wage’ is to be brought in by this government from April 2016.It will be 7.20 an hour for workers aged 25 and older. The minimumwage will still apply for workers aged 24 and under. I hope that thisinformation will help you to understand what is happening moreclearly.Lastly, please could you pray regularly for the work of the towncentre and Marsh chaplaincies – that we might be in the right placeat the right time with the right words to offer a sensitive Christianperspective on life.Deacon GillCoffee Morning PlusFor refreshments and a chat.Don’t forget coffee time at St Peter’s onthe first Saturday every month between10am and 2pm with stalls.Sat 5 December and Sat 2 JanuaryThe October coffee morning raised 280 whichwas donated to the Welcome Centre39
