Monroe County Marriage Records Index, 1906-1960PrefaceMarriage Application BooksThis index is based on the Monroe County, Indiana, Marriage Application Books 11through 44 (book 41 does not exist; it was skipped by the Clerk’s Office), covering theyears 1906-1960. Applications contain much more information about grooms, brides, andparents, than appears in the index. The extra information is valuable for familyresearchers, and includes:“Color”Place of BirthPlace of ResidenceOccupationPrior Marriage (groom and bride only)Children by Prior Marriage (groom only)Communicable Diseases and Mental Disabilities (groom and bride only)Name of Marrying OfficialGroom & Bride SectionsThis index is divided into two sections separated by a colored sheet, the firstalphabetically by bride’s surname, and the second by the groom’s surname.Column DescriptionsColumns 1 and 4: Names of the groom or bride, surname first.Columns 2 and 5: Birthdate of the groom or bride, in Month/Day/Year format. Yearsfrom 1800’s show up as 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s.Columns 3 and 6: Names of parents of groom or bride. Father’s first and middle (ifrecorded) names only are given if his surname is the same as the groom or bride. If thenames are different, father’s first, middle (if recorded), and last names are given.However, if a middle name is given in the record, there are instances where it mightappear to be a last name in the index. (For example, “John Alexander” might be a firstand middle name, or first and last name with no middle name recorded.) The actualmarriage record must be consulted to clarify this ambiguity.Column 7: Date of marriage in Month/Day/Year format. In cases where there is norecord that the marriage actually took place, the notation “NR” (not recorded) follows theapplication date. This means either that the marriage did not occur, or the marryingofficial failed to come to the county clerk’s office to verify it. In most cases it is notpossible to know which.Column 8: Marriage Book number, 32 through 44, followed by page number.Spelling Variations & Handwriting ProblemsThe entries usually involve at least two different persons, the clerk and the officialperforming the marriage. Sometimes there are two or more clerks entering different partsof the application. Therefore, there are variations in spelling and handwriting. The indexincludes some double entries, with two different spellings of surnames, when the twoi

different persons disagreed on the name, or when the handwriting is difficult to interpret.For example, a surname might be “Lee” or “See,” depending on one’s interpretation.Both names have been entered. Similarly, the clerk might write “Coons” and themarrying official “Koons.” Again, both are entered. When there is a difference in firstnames or middle names or initials, the alternative is put in parens with a question mark.EditionsThis edition was created by checking the revised first edition indexes against the entriesin each original marriage application book, and making necessary corrections. The reindexing was done by Lee Ehman in January, 2017 through December, 2018. The revisedfirst edition was computerized and indexed by Rachel Rice and coordinated andassembled by Claude F. Rice and Betty L. Rice, and was published by the MonroeCounty Historical Society in 1997.CopiesEach page of the original marriage application books has been digitized. Copies are notmade from the original books in order to prevent damage. Copies from the digital filescan be made by Research Library staff for a fee.ii
