Summer Camp 2018Welcome to Winchester Thurston’s Summer Camp 2018!We offer camps and programs for children entering pre-school (three-years-old) through grade 5. Choose froman array of options in adventure and play, sports and physical fitness, creative arts, and academics. WT’s skilledfaculty members develop and teach many of these outstanding programs.Half and Full Day Programs Available:Check program description for details.Lunch: Students may opt to bring a bag lunch orpurchase a lunch for a flat weekly fee. Mid-morning andafternoon snacks will be provided at no extra charge.You will receive a lunch menu with your registrationconfirmation; the menu can also be found on ourwebsite at www.winchesterthurston.org/summercamp.Lunch fee: 35 per week. Pre-registration is required.Transportation: Two-way transportation is availablebetween the City Campus and the North Hills Campus.A bus will leave the City Campus promptly at 8:15a.m., arriving at the North Hills Campus by 9:00 a.m.A return trip will be made at the end of the day, leavingthe North Hills Campus at 4:00 p.m. and returning tothe City Campus around 4:30 p.m. For families withcampers attending our grade 6-12 camps at the CityCampus, we offer transportation to our City Campusfrom the North Hills Campus – the van will leave theNorth Hills Campus at 8:15 a.m. and return by 4:30p.m. every day. Early birds can arrive at 7:30 a.m. andare welcome to stay until pick up at 5:30 p.m. We willalso offer van service from Aspinwall.Need an early morning solution? Families can drop offcampers as early as 7:30 a.m. at the North Hills Campus for just 10 per day. Pre-registration is required.Don’t want to stop the fun? Extend the day from 4:00to 5:30 p.m. with after camp care at the North HillsCampus for only 10 per day. Or, ride the bus to theCity Campus and take advantage of the complimentaryafter care included in the transportation fee. Preregistration required.Registration deadline: May 1, 2018.Space is limited. Please register early.Tuition: Half day program: 185 per week. Two halfday programs (morning and afternoon sessions): 350per week. Full day program: 375 per week.Cancellation Policy: All summer camp offeringsare subject to minimum and maximum enrlment. Inthe event of a cancellation, Winchester Thurstonwill attempt to notify families in advance and refundthe entire course fee. If a camper must cancel andcancellation is received 21 days prior to the class startdate, you will receive a full refund. If cancellation isreceived less than 21 days, but at least seven days priorto the camp start date you will receive a 50% refundof the camp cost. There is no refund for cancellationreceived less than seven days before the camp start date.Change Policy: We understand that family schedulescan be complex and that sometimes changes need to bemade to an original plan. WEEK TWO: JUNE 11-15Magic Treehouse: Dolphins at DaybreakFencing Clinic Jr.Jack Annie and YOU! Campers will experience magic, myth,history, and mystery every day! This camp experience will takeus deep into the sea, where we will meet upwith dolphins, sharks, squid, and other seacreatures while searching for the answerto an ancient riddle. Each day willinvolve unique projects, challenges, andclues as we work to help Jack and Annienavigate the wonderful and mysteriousunderwater world!En garde! This basic level camp will introduce students to thesport of fencing. Each day, we will engage in warm-up exercisesand stretching, basic footwork and blade work exercises, andessential tactics and strategies. Young athletes will learn to fenceand develop an understanding of fencing’s strategy, rules, andconduct related to the history of swordsmanship. Skills will bereinforced through practice and drills. Manychildren joined us for an enchanted week of camp to help solvefamiliar problems of our favorite characters. Children workedtogether to conquer the unexpected challenges that occurredwithin the stories they heard. Campers used their imaginationsand scientific minds to help design a house that couldn’t be blowndown, build a chair that was just right for Goldilocks, constructa bridge that helped to protect three billy goats from one old,angry troll, and so much more! This week, campers will transform their worldsas they learn the five elements of storytelling.They will create new characters, adventureto faraway places, transform currentspaces, explore conflict, and developexciting plot twists. We will alsospend time constructing our personalnarratives and original stories. Ourweek will close with WT Summer Camp’svery first Story Slam where storytellers willbe invited to share their original pieces andget some tips from one of Pittsburgh’s Moth Story Slam winners.Storytellers will come home with a recorded copy of their story.Grades: 3, 4, 59:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.AFTERNOON SESSIONSGnome and Fairy AdventureJoin us for a magical discovery of the gnomes and fairies who livein the wild sections of WT’s Nature Playground. Have a blast playing and learning about sports from all overthe world. Sports will include rugby, team handball, World Cupsoccer, and ultimate Frisbee. Looking at axles, ramps,wheels, and bodies, engineers will spendthe week designing their best racecar.The week will end in our own Dakar Rallywhere cars are tested over different kinds ofterrain on our very own track. Theresults will be put to the test as we workto keep the North Hills Campus safefrom Week 2 dangers and “villains.”These Super Heroes will learn to thinklike a hero and discover that bad ideasdo not always mean bad people. Each day will have hands on activitiesusing gears, levels, hinges, action andreaction, and simple hand tools. Thesescientists will take what they havelearned to sketch, design, and createtheir very own “Do Nothing Machine.”This camp is all about exploring and discovering nature! Camperswill hike, climb, dig, and observe as they learn about the plants,animals, habitats, trails, and nature on WT’ssprawling wooded campus. Campers willcreate plastic casts of animal prints,fish with hand lines, and experiencethe “underworld” like never before. We will use our artistic visionand imaginations to create miniaturecookies, bread, ice cream cones,cupcakes, emoji’s, cartoon characters,unicorns, pizzas, puppies, and more! Campers should be ready for a full day of horseloving fun! Our mornings will be spent on campus working onprojects, learning about horses, and enjoyinggames and activities linked to our loveof horses! We will research and studythe characteristics of different breedsof horses, prepare special snacks forhorses, paint horseshoes, meet a farrier,play games, and explore additionalhorse-themed activities and projects.Our afternoons will be spent at the CedarRun Farms (only a five-minute van ride fromWT’s campus). While at the barn, the teacher/counselor/horse tocamper ratio will be 1:3. Under the watchful eye of knowledgeableinstructors and counselors, campers will enjoy a 45-minutehorseback riding lesson on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday,and campers will practice the constant respect and understandingfor safety when working with horses. Wednesdays will be our poolday at the barn. Each camper will assume shared responsibility for“their horse” for the week, helping with the daily stable choresfor grooming, tacking, mucking, untacking, and riding. Amid thedaily horse activities, riding instructors maintain the camp spiritof fun, new friendships, and the discovery and celebration of newabilities. Guided by knowledgeable, passionate Cedar Run RidingInstructors, riding lessons will be adapted to meet rider comfortlevel, experience, and ability. This nature immersion camp is designed to foster physical,emotional, and mental balance through anauthentic connection with the naturalworld. Activities may include plant andanimal awareness, nature games andcrafts, creating secret hideouts in theforest, making forest decorations, naturejournaling, and storytelling. This campis held completely outdoors. Bring yourwellies and your raincoat if it looks like theweather will be wet. We also ask that campersbring an extra set of clothes – just in case!
