Dear Campers (and parents), We invite you to participate in a UNI STEM Camp this summer. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are all around us, a part of every day life. The camp sessions presented in this brochure are designed with your interests in STEM in mind. Our goals are to provide Cedar Valley students with unique, fun, and exciting experiences in STEM, and an opportunity to explore the UNI Campus, make new friends, and build and discover your their STEM strengths. Please check out the opportunities in this brochure and see the UNI Summer Camps website (www.uni.edu/camps) to register for an EPSCoR funded STEM camp and explore the other summer opportunities at UNI. -UNI STEM and the 2015 EPSCoR STEM Camp Directors The NSF EPSCoR (Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research) grant provides Iowa Regent’s Universities funding to enhance our state’s research capacity and broaden the STEM workforce in Iowa. At UNI, we are building the next generation of Iowa’s STEM workforce by increasing access and interest in STEM through the Summer STEM Camps within this guide. 2015 Camp offerings Digital Storytelling June 8th-12th, 2015, 12:30 pm – 4:30 pm daily Ages: entering 8th through 12th grades Fee: 75.00 Director: Andrew McCormick, andrew.mccormick@cfschools.org Logistics: Camp is located in 115 & 116 Communication Arts Center (CAC), UNI Campus. Fee includes camp programming and computer lab access. Explore the power of technology to communicate and tell stories. Digital storytelling requires mastery of technical design skills and the development of interesting narratives. The camp begins with sessions on Adobe Photoshop and iMovie basics then transitions into time to create, at your own pace, your own original narrative story master project. Previous campers have created comic books, animated shorts, card games and more. Fashion & Interior Design STEM Lab – For Girls June 8th-12th, 2015, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm daily Ages: entering 7th through 10th grades Fee: 100.00 Director: Annette Lynch, annette.lynch@uni.edu Logistics: Camp is located in 251 Latham Hall (LAT), UNI Campus. Fee includes programming and individual camper supplies. Lunch and a snack are provided daily. Have you ever dreamed of being a fashion or interior designer? We’ll start with your fantasy fashion design and bring it to life using computer-aided design software. You’ll discover the STEM in design as you learn how to develop a ‘spec sheet’, design your own print fabric, test fabric in the materials testing lab and create a backpack from your own print. The second half of the week will focus on interior design. You’ll learn how to transform you dream room into a professional interior design plan and share your creations with family and friends during a final day open house.

Solar and Wind Powered Fun Tuesdays June 9th, 16th, 23th and 30th, 2015, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm Ages: entering 4th through 6th grades Fee: 80.00 Director: Pat Higby, higby@uni.edu Logistics: Camp is located in 12 Center for Energy and Environmental Education (CEEE), UNI Campus. Fee includes programming and individual camper supplies. Four Tuesdays of Wind and Solar fun. Explore engineering as you build and test your own model solar vehicle and design a wind turbine. Investigate which materials work best in the design of passive solar buildings. Get your hands on some of the tools used to maintain wind turbines and explore energy related STEM Careers. Exploring the Tallgrass Prairie June 22nd-26th, 2015, 9:00 am – 12:00 noon daily Ages: entering 2nd through 6th grades Fee: 35.00 Director: Wendy Miller, wendy.miller@uni.edu Logistics: Camp is located in 211 Kamerick Art Building (KAB), UNI Campus. Fee includes programming and camp art supplies. Come explore the tallgrass prairie through art, science, and technology! We will visit UNI’s prairie preserves to learn about the plants and animals that live on the prairie and then create photographs, sketches, and other art inspired by our exploration. If you love being outdoors and learning about nature and art this camp is for you! Renewable Energy June 22th-26th, 2015, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm daily Ages: entering 7th through 9th grades Fee: 100.00 Director: Sadik Kucuksari, sadik.kucuksari@uni.edu Logistics: Camp is located in 10 & 13 Industiral Technology Center (ITC), UNI Campus. Fee includes programming and use of LEGO Renewable Energy kits. Lunch and a snack are provided daily. Campers must wear jeans or other long pants and tennis shoes or other close-toed shoes in the ITC labs. Spend the week at the UNI Electrical Engineering Technology (EET) facility exploring energy sources, especially renewable energy. Get your hands on EET lab equipment (including solar panels, wind tunnel, and turbine) to investigate circuits, generators, and motors. Once you’ve got the basics of energy down you’ll work in teams with LEGO Renewable Energy Kits to solve a series of challenges.

Ultimate Sumo Robots June 22nd-26th, 2015, 9:00 am – 3:30 pm daily Ages: entering 9th through 12th grades Fee: 345.00 Director: Dale Olson, dale.olson@uni.edu Logistics: Camp takes place in 214 Begeman Hall (PHY), UNI Campus. Fee includes programming, use of lab tools and supplies, and camper’s own sumo robot kit to take home. Campers should bring a sack lunch and snacks daily and wear comfortable clothing. Build your own fighting sumo robot in just one week! Design, build, program, and test your own mini-sumo robot then challenge fellow campers to a match of power and wits in the sumo ring (like Japanese Sumo wrestlers). Can your robot expel all challengers while holding its ground? Everyone will exit the ring and the week with new design and programming skills, knowledge of autonomous vehicle robotics and their own robot to take home. Special Note: This camp is open to beginner through advanced robotics levels and may be repeated for more advanced experiences. Repeat campers who return with their robot receive a half-price discount on registration. Energy Factions – Are you divergent? June 29th- July 3rd, 2015, 9:00 am – 3:30 pm daily Ages: entering 8th through 12th grades Fee: 100.00 Director: Chad Heinzel, chad.heinzel@uni.edu Logistics: Camp takes place in 111 Latham Hall (LAT), Fee includes programming, supplies, and field trips. Lunch and a snack is provided daily. Discover how conventional and alternative energies impact our daily lives. This course will build your knowledge and skills with respect to addressing some of our societies’ ‘Wicked Problems’. Participate in role-playing games to determine the role energy will play in the US Economy in 2040. Field trips will investigate local limestone quarries, the UNI Tallgrass Prairie Center, and a Hydroelectric Dam (near Maquoketa). These experiences will enable you and your fellow campers to explore Iowa’s energy issues. You’ll also complete your own personal energy audit.

Introduction to Robotics — For Girls July 6th-10th, 2015, 8:30 am – 3:00 pm daily Ages: entering 5th through 9th grades Fee: 100.00 Director: Sarah Diesburg, diesburg@cs.uni.edu Logistics: Camp takes place in 322 and 328 Innovative Teaching and Technology Center (ITTC), UNI Campus. Fee includes use of robot kit and programming software during camp. Campers should bring a sack lunch and snacks daily. Campers will form teams to design and build Lego EV3 robots. Team members will work together to program their robots to solve a variety of simulated problems. For girls with no previous through beginner level robotics and programming experience, this camp will build programming, design, and problem solving skills in an exciting and fun environment. Fun with Drones, Plants, and Power July 7th-10th, 2015, see description Ages: entering 4th through 7th grades Fee: 85.00 Director: Cindy Hall, chall@iowaagliteracy.org Logistics: Camp takes place at the TallGrass Prairie Center (NRV), Fee includes programming, supplies, and field trip. This camp meets from noon to 4:00 pm on Tuesday, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Wednesday and Thursday, and 9:00 am – noon on Friday. A snack is provided daily and lunch is provided on Wednesday and Thursday. Innovations in agriculture are amazing! In this hands-on camp you will conduct your own water quality and plant science investigations. You’ll also visit a local farm, equipment dealership and renewable energy site to discover the role of drones, GPS, biofuels, and other technology across Iowa today.

Language and Logic of Algebra – For Girls July 13th-17th, 2015, 9:00 am – 12:00 pm daily Ages: entering 7th through 8th grades Fee: 125.00 Director: Matt Webb, matthew.webb@uni.edu Logistics: Camp takes place in 205 Wright Hall (WRT), UNI Campus. Fee includes programming, transitions to algebra materials, and a daily snack. Introducing the language and logic of algebra in an all-girl environment, you will build your mathematical reasoning and communication skills. Work cooperatively with your peers to become better prepared for high school mathematics courses and be ready for STEM opportunities beyond high school.

Mastering Multiplayers July 13th-17th, 2015, 9:00 am – 4:00 pm daily Ages: entering 6th through 12th grades Fee: 175.00 Director: Paul Gray, gray@cs.uni.edu Logistics: Camp takes place in 328 Innovative Teaching and Technology Center (ITTC), UNI Campus. Fee includes programming and server access. Lunch and a snack are provided daily. Get your game on! Campers will explore the server side of online gaming with Minecraft and Steam-based games. Deploy and manage (and play!) a multiplayer game server on a cloud-based service. Tackle network setup, server configuration, security constraints, and game customization through plugins and extensions. Moving Through Math July 30th-31th, 2015, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm daily Ages: entering 1st through 2nd grades Fee: 50.00 Director: Amy Hunzelman, amy.hunzelman@uni.edu Logistics: Camp takes place at Gallagher Bluedorn, UNI Campus. Fee includes programming and supplies. Campers should bring a sack lunch each day and wear comfortable clothing. A snack is provided daily. Move math concepts off the page and into your children’s mind and body when math is integrated with rhythm, movement, storytelling, and the imagination. When integrating music and movement with math, students move past rote memorizing and toward conceptual thinking. Students will learn to create, perform, and describe a deeper understanding of mathematics. Campers will draw pictures, create rhythm and movement patterns, and accurately use the language of mathematics to deepen their comprehension.
