Staff Services Analyst (SSA) (General) Transfer ExaminationIn accordance with State Personnel Board (SPB) policy, effective August 1,2007, all individuals transferring into the Staff Services Analyst (SSA)(General) classification must pass a written transfer examination.The transfer examination is designed to test the necessary knowledge, skills,and abilities for appointment to the SSA (General) classification. The transferexamination is scored as pass or fail.Candidates who successfully passed the SSA (General) written examinationadministered by the SPB between January 2000 and July 31, 2007, will not berequired to take the SSA (General) transfer examination. Candidates who aresuccessful in the transfer examination will be added to the master listing ofcandidates who have passed the SSA (General) transfer examination and willbe maintained indefinitely for transfer purposes.The CAL FIRE Examination Unit will be administering the transfer examinationas conditions warrant. The Examination Unit will be accepting the StaffServices Analyst (General) Transfer Examination Request form once a newexamination filing period has opened.Candidates who fail the SSA (General) transfer examination will be allowed toretake the test once every six (6) months. This will afford qualified stateemployees more opportunity to take and pass the SSA transfer examinationin order to pursue their career goals. Please note that if a candidate haspreviously taken and passed the transfer examination, he/she does NOT needto retake the examination to maintain eligibility.Additionally, SPB has ruled that any employee who transferred into the SSAclass, regardless of when, or who has taken and successfully passed the SSA(General) transfer examination, can now obtain a list appointment IF theemployee takes the SSA (General) Life Experience Questionnaire examination,passes and is reachable on the certification list when ordered.For questions regarding the SSA (General) transfer examination, pleasecontact the Exam Unit at (916) 894-9580 or CALFIREexams@fire.ca.gov.REVISED 03/2021

If his/her eligibility is basedon a different classification that allows them to transfer to the SSA,he/she will need to take the transfer examination.Q:When an employee qualifies for movement into an SSA positionvia the transfer examination, what range will he/she go into?A:The transfer examination is only an approval for movement into theSSA class. Range placement continues to depend on the salarydetermination process.Q:If an employee successfully passed the SSA transfer exam andlaterally transferred into a position (A02), can he/she take andpass the SSA (General) Life Experience Questionnaire onlineexamination to be hired off that list for an A01 appointment?A:Yes, any employee who transferred to an SSA position can now obtaina list appointment IF he/she is reachable on the SSA CalHR (General)Life Experience Questionnaire (online examination) certification list atthe time it is ordered.Q:What about employees who have taken the transferexamination at another department, are their resultstransferable?A:Yes, their results may be used by CAL FIRE or the Natural ResourcesAgency.
