To install batteries,carefully turn it over sothat the top side is facedown on a soft surface,such as a towel or magazine. You’ll find the batterycompartment on the unit’sback.Use a small Phillipsscrewdriver to remove thescrew. Lift off the batterycompartment lid. Installtwo AAA batteries, makingsure to match the polarity( and -) with the diagraminside the battery compartment. Place the tabs of thebattery compartment intheir slots, and snap thecompartment door back on.Replace the screw andtighten it carefully.3

How to Playfunction on or off. When this function is on, the unit will generate allcorrect numbers automaticallywhen you touch the ON/CONFIRMbutton for two seconds.ton. The screen will display theicons G1 and G2. Use the stylusto press G1 to begin a New YorkTimes puzzle, or G2 to create acustom puzzle. If no key ispressed for ten seconds, a demowill appear on the screen. Pressany key to exit the demo.If you choose a NYT puzzle,the first digit of the puzzle number will flash. Input the puzzlenumber you wish to play withthe stylus by pressing on therespective number on the bottom of the touch screen.The New York Times TouchSuDoku includes 835 puzzles.Puzzles 1-265 are for beginners;puzzles 266-460 are for intermediate players; puzzles 461-650are for advanced players; and651-835 are for expert players.After you’ve selected yourdesired puzzle, press the CONFIRM button to play.The cursor will flash on thefirst empty square of the firstrow. Thebutton is located on the backof the unit.RESETSuDokuThe object of the game is toplace numbers in the emptysquares so that each row, eachcolumn and each three by threegrid contains the numbers onethrough nine once.How to Play The New YorkTimes Touch SuDokuAfter you’ve installed newbatteries, press the RESET but-6to scroll through numbers onethrough nine.If you input an incorrect number, you will see a circled-Xicon flash and you will hearbeeping sounds. You can turnoff this function by selectingMENU and FALSE FLASH ON. Youhave to return to that square andinput a new entry to proceed ifthe FALSE FLASH function is on.The maximum time allowedto complete a puzzle is 999 minutes. The timer will be begin tocount from 0 to 999.After you’ve completed apuzzle, press the CONFIRM button. The unit will play a winningmelody and the WIN icon willappear on the side of the screen.The screen will show yourscore as shown in the followingexample:1102320The first number (1) represents the number of the puzzlein the list. The second number(102) represents the time ofcompletion. The third number(320) represents your finalscore.Touch any button to displaythe following puzzle. Then pressthe CONFIRM button to play.Your New York Times TouchSuDoku can store up to ninepuzzle records. You can viewyour score records by pressingthe CONFIRM button after completing a puzzle. If you select apage number that you’vealready completed, the WIN iconwill appear on the side of thescreen.Custom PuzzlesTo enter and play a custompuzzle from a book, newspaper,or magazine, choose the G2flashing icon and press theON/CONFIRM button after selecting NEW GAME. Use the stylus tochoose the desired square in thepuzzle, then choose the corresponding number at the bottomof the LCD. Continue thisprocess until you have enteredall the “givens” from your puzzle, then press the ON/CONFIRMtwice, once to confirm yourentries, and once to begin playing. When you are ready todelete your puzzle, press andhold the HINT button for twoseconds.7

Additional FeaturesScoringThe New York Times SuDokuincludes several additional gamefeatures.The Self Play feature is like ananswer key at the back of aSuDoku book. If this feature ison, you can view all of the correct entries for the puzzle bytouching the CONFIRM button fortwo seconds. If you’re stumpedand just want to see the correctanswer for a single square, pressthe HINT button.The FALSE FLASH functionenables you to complete a puzzlewith or without knowingwhether an entry is incorrect. Ifyou input an incorrect entrywhen the function is on, you willknow because the incorrect entrywill flash. This function is greatfor beginners.If you are more advanced anddo not want to know if yourentry is incorrect, turn this function off.In addition, you can even playagainst your friends by playingthe same puzzle. At the end ofeach puzzle, you get a finalscore. Challenge a friend to thesame puzzle and see who getsthe top SuDoku score!Scores are computed bytotalling the following:10 POINTS: Filling in an emptysquare correctly.10 POINTS: Completing a threeby-three grid correctly.90 POINTS: Completing an entirepuzzle correctly.TipsUse the following tips in yourgame and you’ll be a SuDokumaster in no time.If you get stuck during agame, try one of the followingsuggestions.If you can’t figure out a correct number for a square, pressthe HINT button for an answer.If you believe you have incorrectly inputted a number, youcan delete it by pressing theUNDO/NEW GAME button.Sometimes when you getstuck, it’s best to take a breakand return to the puzzle laterwith a clearer mind. Press theLOAD/SAVE button to save yourpuzzle. When you are ready togive it another shot, press theLOAD/SAVE button to return toyour saved puzzle.8Special Care and Handling Avoid rough handling such as bumping or dropping. Avoid moisture and extreme temperatures. For best results, usebetween the temperatures of 39º F and 100º F (4º C and 38º C). Clean using only a slightly damp cloth. Do not use cleaners withchemical agents.Battery Information Your New York Times Touch SuDoku uses two AAA batteries,not included. Do not mix alkaline, standard (carbon-zinc) or rechargeable(nickel-cadmium) batteries. Do not mix old and new batteries. Do not use rechargeable batteries. Remove exhausted batteries from the unit.If no button is pressed for about three minutes, the unit will entersleep mode to conserve battery life. Press the ON/CONFIRM button towake the unit up. Your unit may lock up due to static discharge orother electrical disturbances. If this should happen, use a slim,pointed object to press the RESET button on the back of the unit.9
