ApplicationInstructionsApply Online: admissions.rit.eduApplicant StatusYou should apply to RIT as a freshman if you are currently insecondary school or have graduated from secondary school buthave not yet at tended college. Special information re gardingadmission as an Early Decision freshman, NTID, or HEOPcandidate is provided below. Students who have attended anycollege after graduating from secondary school should applyusing RIT’s Application for Transfer Admission.Early Decision PlansIf you’re applying to RIT as a freshman and have identifiedRIT as your first-choice college, you may want to apply foran early review of your ap plication through one of our EarlyDecision Plans.To apply for Early Decision, you should check the appropriatebox in the Applicant Status section of your application andreturn your completed form along with all supporting credentials (in cluding transcripts, SAT or ACT scores, andrecommendation) by November 1 for Early Decision I orJanuary 1 for Early Decision II.Under either Early Decision Plan, if you are admitted to RITin your first-choice major and choose to enroll at RIT, you mustsubmit a 300 acceptance of admission deposit by January 15for Early Decision I or February 15 for Early Decision II andwithdraw your applications with all other colleges/universitiesat that time.Early Decision candidates who are not accepted will, in mostcases, be asked to submit midyear senior grades and will bereviewed a second time as part of the Regular Decision groupof applicants. Candidates who are accepted to an alternate(second- or third-choice) major may request to be released fromthe conditions of the Early Decision Plan.Early Decision candidates should submit a FAFSA byDecember 1.Regular Decision PlanMost applications for admission to RIT are re viewed under ourRegular Decision Plan.Under this plan, freshman applicants for fall semester (August)entry who have provided all re quired application materials byJanuary 15 will have their admission notification mailed by midMarch. Fresh men who apply for fall semester admission afterFebruary 1 are notified of admission decisions on a space-available basis four to six weeks after their application is complete.Candidates who submit their applications and academicrecords by January 15 will be considered for RIT’s meritbased scholarship programs and the RIT Honors program.All freshman applications for spring semester or summer termentry are reviewed on a rolling basis, with notification lettersmailed four to six weeks after the application is complete. Allapplications filed by international students are also reviewed andnotified on a rolling basis.Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing ApplicantsDeaf and hard-of-hearing students may apply for admission toprograms offered at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf(NTID) or to any other college of RIT. Whether you are applying to an NTID program or a program in any other RITcollege, you should check the appropriate box in the ApplicantStatus section of the application and submit the RITAudiological Form or an unaided audiogram completed withinthe last three years from a certified audiologist in order toreceive the federally supported tuition rate for deaf and hardof-hearing students.New York State Arthur O. EveHigher Education Opportunity ProgramThe Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) provideseducationally and financially disadvantaged residents of NewYork state with access to independent colleges and universitiesthroughout the state by providing special academic supportservices and financial assistance.New York state residents who wish to be considered foradmission through HEOP should check the box for HEOPadmission in the Applicant Status section. HEOP candidates must submit a FAFSA by Janurary 15 to determineHEOP eligibility. Please contact our HEOP Office at585-475-2506 to discuss HEOP financial eligibility guidelines.HEOP admission is available only to students who have notpreviously attended college, or to transfer students who were partof their previous college’s EOP or HEOP program. Candidatesare en couraged to request a waiver of the normally required 65application fee if needed.International ApplicantsInternational students may apply using any of the EarlyDecision or Regular Decision plans.International students may apply online, use this application form, or use RIT’s International Student Ap pli ca tion.Students whose native language is not English must submitresults of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL),the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)examination, or an equivalent to be reviewed by the Office ofUndergraduate Admissions.International applicants who are deaf or hard-of-hearing shouldcheck the appropriate box in the Applicant Status section ofthe application and submit an audiological record in order toqualify for educational access and support services providedthrough NTID.1

Program SelectionWhen applying for admission to RIT, you are asked to select aspecific major as part of our ad mission process. This is importantbe cause we of fer a variety of majors, and admission requirements may differ from one program to an other. In this section,you will select the major you want to study at RIT. The majorsare listed on pages 3 and 4. Please refer to this list when indicating your program choice.If you do not meet the requirements for admission to your firstchoice major, or if this major has filled all available spaces, youwill not be offered admission to your first choice major. Youmay, however, be offered admission to a second- or third-choicealternate major if you have selected one. Applicants who choosealternate majors from different colleges within RIT are morelikely to be admitted to one of their chosen majors.Undecided?If you do not feel ready to select a specific major, you may applyfor admission to one of the “undeclared option” programs offeredby several RIT colleges, or choose the University Explorationprogram if your interests span more than one RIT college.University Exploration OptionIf you have interests that span two or more of our colleges, ourbroadest and most flexible option, the University Explorationoption (offered by the University Studies Division), allows youup to one year of course work to explore and focus youracademic and career interests.Undeclared OptionsIf your primary interests fall within a specific college, but you areunsure of your specific major, many colleges offer UndeclaredOptions. These college-based options help you discover moreabout your specific interests within the majors offered bythe college.Portfolio RequirementsAll students applying for admission to the School of Art, theSchool for American Crafts, the School of Design , and the Schoolof Film and Animation must submit a portfolio for consideration. Please review the portfolio instructions available rtfolio-guide.Students who wish to make special arrangements to show theirportfolio while visiting campus should contact the UndergraduateAdmissions Office. Applicants who are deaf or hard of hearingshould contact NTID Admissions.Required Admission Tests(RIT SAT Code #2760, RIT ACT Code #2870)All freshman applicants must submit results from the SAT(SAT-I) or ACT. Applicants should have the testing agency sendSAT or ACT scores directly to RIT or have scores included ontheir high school transcript. RIT will accept results from anytest date, and ACT or SAT examinations are equally acceptablefor admission consideration. The ACT’s optional writing test isrecommended but not required for those students who choosethe ACT. International students whose native language is notEnglish must submit results of the TOEFL or IELTS and areencouraged to also submit SAT or ACT results if available.Honors Program AdmissionProspective students begin the Honors program admissionprocess by submitting RIT’s Application for UndergraduateAdmission along with secondary school transcripts and SAT orACT scores. These materials must be submitted by the deadlinesassociated with the Early and Regular Decision timetables.Applications postmarked by those dates are reviewed by theUndergraduate Admissions Office to select a limited number ofcandidates who are then admitted to the Honors program.
