Section 1: General introductionAbout this Qualification SpecificationThis Qualification Specification contains details of all the units you will be required tocomplete to gain the qualification.How the qualification worksThis qualification is made up of units each representing a small step of learning. This allowsthe qualification to be completed at your own pace.All of the units achieved can be ‘banked’. This means that if you want to take anotherqualification which includes the same units you do not have to take them again.Each unit has: a level – shows how difficult it is a credit value – one credit represents about 10 hours' work a unit aim – explains what is covered in the unit learning outcomes – cover what you need to do (skills) or what you need to understand(knowledge) assessment criteria – what you need to show (evidence).Each learning outcome is linked to a number ofassessment criteria. Evidence must be provided for allthe assessment criteria to gain the unit.Version 4.4p8

Section 1: General introductionUnderstanding learning outcomesThere are two main types of learning outcome: Skills that can be performed Knowledge that can be learnt.Sometimes they can cover a combination of the two.Competence/Skills-based learning outcomes: Begin with ‘Be able to’. The assessment criteria usually show that the evidencecould be observable within a real work environment. Other methods may beapplied, please see chart in Assessment Guidance section. All evidence must bebased on the learner’s experience in a real work environment.Knowledge based learning outcomes: Begin with ‘Know’, ‘Understand’ or ‘Know how to.’For your convenience, Knowledge-only units are indicated by a lightbulb inboth the Unit List and at the top of the units.If a unit is not marked with a lightbulb, it is a skills unit or contains a mix ofknowledge and skills.Assessing competenceLearners will need to meet all of the assessment criteria for knowledge, skills andcompetence included in the qualification using assessment methods selected at Assessordiscretion.To aid Assessors with discretionary decisions concerning individual experience in real workenvironments across the age range from 0-5 years: direct observations must continue to beused to assess competence with the age range the learner is working with but can becomplemented with expert witness testimonies, reflective accounts including prior knowledgeand professional discussions to assess knowledge, skills and competence outside of thisage range.Version 4.4p9

The many links to useful websites within this document are allaccessible at the time of going to print.Qualification purposeThe NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma for the Early Years Workforce (Early Years Educator)(QRN: 601/2629/2) prepares learners to become Early Years Educators, enabling them towork with children from birth to 5 years and gain knowledge of children aged 5 to 7 years.Upon achievement of this qualification it is intended that learners will be able to enter theworkforce as Early Years Educators.In response to the Department for Education and National College for Teaching andLeadership Policy, Improving the quality and range of education and childcare frombirth to 5 years, we have built a qualification to meet the Criteria required for those wishingto become Early Years Educators.We have surpassed the minimum requirements set out in the Full and Relevant Criteria todevelop a qualification which reflects the priorities of practitioners and employers to meet theneeds of young children.Entry requirementsLearners must be at least 16 years old. We do not set any other entry requirements butCentres may have their own guidelines.Early Years Educator: GSCE English and Maths requirementThe requirement for Level 3 Early Years Educators (EYE) to hold GCSE English and mathsA*-C, has been broadened to Level 2 qualifications, including Functional Skills. This will alsoapply to an apprenticeship route.This will enable staff with an EYE qualification and Level 2 English and mathematicsqualifications to count in the Level 3 staff: child ratios in childcare settings. Units will be internally assessed. Wehave created innovative non-mandatory tasks for all units, with the exception ofUnit 3.15 (see Longitudinal Study below). These can be found in the LearnerHandbook and Tutor Guidance documents on our secure site. Longitudinal Study (Unit 3.15)This will be a mandatory task set by us. It will be internally assessed.
