EditorialOne of the most important things in life is having a place where we really feel athome. It makes no difference whether it we own it or rent it or whether it is an apartment or a house: what matters is the sense of security and wellbeing we feel withinits walls. The right lighting concept plays a crucial role here.Science defines light as the band of electromagnetic radiation that is perceptibleby the human eye. The designer sees it as a tool offering innumerable possibilitiesfor crafting living space to suit personal needs and preferences. Our aim in publishing this licht.wissen 14 is to highlight those possibilities and to provide a guide thatwill help you translate them successfully into good lighting – because correct lighting not only promotes a sense of wellbeing; it is also good for health. What the sun does outdoors needs to be performed indoors by artificial lighting. Innature, the soft diffuse light of the sky combines with the dynamic, directional lightof the sun to present a spectacular ever-changing show of light and shadow. Magical moments are created, for example, when sunbeams dance in the forest or whenshafts of light suddenly burst through the clouds on an overcast day. In the home, background brightness is provided by general room lighting, while lighting accentsare set by supplementary zone lighting. A balanced lighting design is a primerequirement for an optimal room atmosphere, which has positive physiological andpsychological impacts both above and below the conscious threshold. This booklet contains a range of design ideas and tips for lighting in the variousparts of the home. It also covers aspects such as quality criteria, standards andregulations. If you require more in-depth information on any of the topics featuredhere, we recommend that you check out the knowledge database at www.licht.de,which bundles impartial expertise from more than 120 licht.de members. licht.de(formerly Fördergemeinschaft Gutes Licht looks back more than 30 years as yourcompetent contact for all questions relating to light and lighting. From entrance to bedroom, bathroom to nursery, living room to kitchen – everyroom in the home needs a lighting concept that is tailored to the function or functions it performs. While reading this booklet, simply imagine walking through therooms of your planned or present home, bringing each one to life with good lighting. In that spirit, on behalf of licht.de, I wish you lots of fun and lots of good ideas forbetter lighting in your home.Dipl. Entrance lightingThe entrance to a home merits special attention where lighting is concerned. It is the first thing a visitor sees.So it is important to select bright and cheerful – but also practical – lighting that reflects the style andpersonality of the occupants.Good exterior lighting is not just decoration; it also helps provide security for residents and guests. Driveway and entrancelighting is the calling card of any home. Itindicates the safe route to front door, garage or carport. It also extends a welcometo guests and facilitates the identificationof visitors.02-04] Outdoor lighting should suit the styleof the house and underline the architecture.Luminaires should be designed and positioned so that no one is dazzled by their light[08] Recessed ground luminaires leadguests to the house and cast the entrancein a special light. In the driveway, recessedground luminaires with safety glass enclosures for loads up to 3,000 kg and with a highdegree of protection (IP 65 or IP 67) are asuitable option.ensures that key and keyhole can easilybe found and names beside doorbells areclearly legible.Lighting all around the building offers comfort and security. It also provides protectionagainst uninvited guests. Motion detectorsallow no one to approach under cover ofdarkness. An illuminated house number ensures thatnot only guests but also taxi drivers, delivery services and, in an emergency, medicsfind the house quickly.Photoelectric lighting controllers permitcomfortable and economical lighting. Suitably compatible energy-saving lamps arerecommended here.To ensure easy orientation, the route to thefront door needs to be sufficiently bright.Where there are stairs or steps on it, safetyis ensured by supplementary plinth, bollard or orientation lights.Wall luminaires and downlights set in canopies or overhanging roofs can strikinglyunderline the architecture of a house. Recessed ground luminaires cast buildingsand surrounding vegetation in a dramaticlight. It is important that there should be a wellilluminated area at the front door. ThisLighting tips:House entranceFront door lighting [03-05] Wall luminaires ordownlights recessed in canopies are particularly suitable for front door lighting. To ensurethat they withstand all weathers, only qual-05ity luminaires with rating plate and mark ofconformity should be used. IP44 (protectionagainst solid bodies larger than 1mm andsplashwater) is a minimum requirement foroutdoor applications.Step and obstacle lighting [06] Bright lighting for obstacles and steps makes for safety.Appropriate lighting options include step lights06and bollard/post-top luminaires.House number lighting [07] Permanently illuminated, sufficiently large house numbers areneeded to ensure that visitors find the housequickly. To ensure that a house number can beread easily from a distance, self-illuminatingnumerals should be at least 10 cm and externally illuminated numerals at least 20 cm high.0507087

Hall and stairway lightingBright, good lighting is essential for the most important circulation areas of a house or apartment. The primerequirement in a hallway is safety and sufficient light at the coatstand and mirror. However, lighting should alsoset accents and ensure that a guest‘s first impression of the home is a positive one.[09] Special architectural features can beemphasized to very good effect with a tracksystem. It also offers lots of opportunities tohighlight different functional zones.[10] Step lights make staircases safer andprovide eye-catching illumination. They alsoemphasize and positively accentuate themateriality of the stairs.Whether visitors are going to feel at homein a house is decided the moment theystep through the door. In many cases, hallways have no window. So bright, invigorating lighting is also required there duringthe day.light before stepping outside. Hallwayslook larger and more attractive where roomlighting bounces off ceiling and walls. Thisis best realised with ceiling or wall luminaires that emit as much light as possibleupwards or sideways. In addition to the general room lighting required for background brightness, spots can be effectively used to highlightfurniture and pictures. Mood lights on asideboard or chest of drawers can helpcreate an inviting atmosphere. Attentionshould also be paid to good mirror lighting. This enables anyone leaving the house torun a quick eye over their clothing in goodTrack systems – which allow a number ofluminaires to be deployed regardless ofwhere the ceiling outlet is located – area good solution for a hallway. Combining room lighting with zone lighting, theymake for a balanced but dynamic lightingdesign.109

that distinguishes it from the next. This isbest achieved with a luminaire installedat the top landing or by step lights thatare integrated in the wall and illuminateeach step separately. Staircase and hallarea should also be uniformly and brightlyilluminated by the general lighting.Safety in the stairway[11-14] The optimal complement for generallighting, wall luminaires set design accents inthe room.[14] The eye tends to be drawn to bright areas. Where pictures or objects are illuminated, they attract attention and help make for agreeable and interesting hallway lighting.[15-16] Recessed wall luminaires and steplights with LED or halogen lamps make foradded safety. However, provision needs to bemade for the necessary power outlets at anearly construction stage.Sadly, staircases are a frequent scene ofaccidents. The cause, in many cases, ispoor lighting: either it is not bright enoughor the light of incorrectly positioned luminaires dazzles or generates confusingshadows that can lead to errors of judgement with serious consequences.Wall luminaires make for a more informallighting atmosphere and set positive accents. Care must be taken, however, toensure that the light does not dazzle anyone walking up or down the stairs anddoes not give rise to confusing castshadows. Most accidents happen on the way downstairs. So it is particularly important thatlighting should make the individual treadsclearly discernible from above.Stair treads are well lit when each individual tread casts a short, soft shadow1718Lighting tips:Hall and stairwayMirror lighting [17] The best way to illuminatea person at a mirror is to position luminaireswith warm-white lamps at the right and left ofthe mirror for shadow-free lighting.Hall stand lighting [18] It is advisable to installsupplementary luminaires to ensure uniformillumination of a cupboard or coat stand.Important note: luminaires recessed in ormounted on wood surfaces need to displaythe fire protection symbol “F“, “M“ or “MM“and should be VDE, ENEC or GS certified.Avoid glare on stairs The lamps in wallluminaires for stairways need to be shieldedfrom above and below and definitely mustnot cause glare.1611

licht.wissen 14 Ideas for Good Home LightingLighting Special: Lighting design and planningA single luminaire is not enough to provide perfect lighting for a room. Good lighting design depends on a sensitivecomposition of diverse light sources at different locations. This creates atmosphere and defines different zones forreading, work or relaxation. At the heart of a successful lighting designis knowledge of the different functions oflighting.differences in brightness, it facilitates adaptation between different lighting zonesand thus helps prevent early visual fatigue. In nature, the soft diffuse light of the skycombines with the dynamic, directionallight of the sun to present a spectacularever-changing show of light and shadow.Magical moments are created, for example, when sunbeams dance in the forest orshafts of light suddenly burst through theclouds on an overcast day.Without general room lighting – e.g. in aliving room in which the only light is provided by a reading light beside the sofa– we find our surroundings dark and disturbing. Balanced room lighting creates acomfortable atmosphere and promotes asense of wellbeing.Zone lighting [21]In the home, background illuinance isprovided by general room lighting, whileindividual areas are visually accentuatedby supplementary lighting for specificzones. These two components are essential for lighting that is not just functional butalso promotes a sense of wellbeing and isgood for health.[19] Orientation lights set into the floor, e.g. ina hallway or stairwell, give walls or individualelements a sculptural, almost architecturalquality. LEDs are particularly suitable for thisbecause of their small dimensions and longlife.Room and zone lighting is supplementedby mood lighting. This is not primarily forillumination; like a fire, it acts as an eyecatching design feature and adds a special note to the atmosphere of the home.Room lighting [20]Room lighting is general, backgroundlighting. It spreads illumination evenlythroughout the room.1912Zone lighting provides light where it isneeded for specific activities, such asreading, eating, working, studying images. At the same time, it sets stimulatinglighting accents that are as important forharmony in the room as uniform generalroom lighting.21This accentuating light is provided byspots directed downwards or at a wall. Themore flexible the positioning of the luminaire, the better the light can be directedto where it is needed. Where a dining tableis illuminated by general room lightingalone, the atmosphere tends to feel sterile.Zone lighting underlines the cosy intimacyof family mealtimes.20Mood lighting [22]Room lighting is realised with light directedup towards the ceiling or with luminairesthat radiate light uniformly in all directions. This provides the background illuminanceneeded for orientation. Reducing markedMood lighting creates a special atmosphere. It emits light but provides little illumination. Instead, it conjures up comfort, romance, fascination, passion. Its solepurpose is to soothe heart and soul.

22Mood lighting is most effective in theevening, when the surroundings are dark. The only important thing is that it shouldnot be too bright; this is essential for arelaxing atmosphere. So mood lightsshould glow rather than shine. They canbe positioned wherever they will have animpact, e.g. on a windowsill, dresser, shelfor the floor.Electrics – planning aheadIn a new building, early electrical planningis the key to good lighting design. As amatter of principle, it is better to plan toomany wall or ceiling outlets than too few.If a room is rearranged later or put to adifferent use, the lighting can then still beflexibly adapted to suit the new situation.dry-lined, power outlets are easier to deploy than in concrete ceilings. Even here, however, early light source planning is stillthe better option. The cavity available offers lots of possibilities for lighting design. For one thing, it can be used to accommodate transformers or ballasts; for another,it permits the use of recessed spots orminiature plug-in lights.A lighting plan is essential for precise, sophisticated planning of home lightinginstallations. It should be drawn to scale, define the lighting characteristics requiredin the room and show furnishings andfunctional zones. The types and numbersof all luminaires should be identified andtheir assignment to furniture and electricalcircuits indicated. The lighting plan canalso show general installation requirementsfor switches, dimmers, sockets or remotecontrols (see also page 16).Luminous flux, measured in lumen (lm), isthe power or quantity of light emitted by alamp.Luminous intensity, measured in candela(cd), is the amount of luminous flux radiating in a particular direction.Luminance, measured in candela persquare metre (cd/m²), is the brightnessof a surface as perceived by the humaneye and is highly dependent on its colour, structure and reflectance.Illuminance, measured in lux (lx), is theluminous flux falling on a given surface.Light colourSpecialist lighting retailers and lighting orelectrical designers can provide a veryuseful service here based on modern lighting design and calculation software.Lighting level and glareWhere power outlets are not availableat the right place, track or wire systemscan help. Supplied with electricity at anypoint, they bridge the gap to where thelight is needed. For example, they are anelegant solution for providing light over adining table where there is no power outletavailable. They eliminate the need for anextension cord looping across the room. Some manufacturers also offer cable ductsspecially designed to suit luminaires.Where ceilings are suspended or wallsBasic lighting variablesLighting planMounting optionsMost residential interiors have plasteredconcrete ceilings with or without recessedceiling outlet boxes. These boxes offer theadvantage of a larger connection compartment, in which small transformers, ballasts or even recessed luminaires can beaccommodated. In the case of luminaireswith a small ceiling base, one disadvantage may be found if the mounting holespacing of the luminaire differs from that ofthe outlet box or if the luminaire base is toosmall to cover the cavity.i.e. the fitment that emits light inside aluminaire. Strictly speaking, any referenceto a lamp should really be a reference to a“light bulb“.Lighting level is an important variable forgood vision. Older people need considerably more light than young people because visual acuity decreases with age.On average, a 60-year-old requires twiceas high much illuminance (lux) as a childor teenager. This should be taken into account in any lighting design for a dwellingfor older people.Glare is generally caused by the presenceof highly luminant surfaces in the field ofvision and comparatively weak ambientlighting. Visual performance is impairedand prolonged exposure may result infatigue, stress and poor concentration.Light colour is the intrinsic colour of thelight emitted by an artificial light source. It is measured in degrees Kelvin (K). As ageneral rule, light colours are divided intothree groups: warm white (below 3,300 K),neutral white (3,300-5,300 K) and daylightwhite (above 5,300 K).Colour renderingColour rendering determines how naturallywe see colours under the light of an artificial lamp. The yardstick used to measureit is the colour rendering index Ra. Underthe light of a lamp with a Ra rating of 100(optimal), all colours look natural. Halogenlamps have the best Ra index (100), fluorescent lamps and energy-saving lampsare normally in the region of Ra 80-90.Colour rendering properties range fromRa20 - Ra100 and depend crucially on thequality of the light source.Lamp or light? The words lamp and light are often confused. Lights are what the industry todaycalls luminaires but they are frequently referred to in common parlance as “lamps“.A lamp is actually only the light source,13

Living room lightingReading, chatting, watching TV, playing games. no room in the home is used for as many different activitiesas the living room. So it is all the more important that lighting should be variable and designed to cater todifferent moods and requirements. A single luminaire in the middle of the ceiling is not enough.Lighting is crucial for the atmosphere ofa room. Harmonious lighting providesgood visual conditions and creates asense of homeliness. For those who prefer even cosier surroundings, the atmosphere can be furtherenhanced by mood lights.General lighting for the living roomGiven the multifunctional nature of a living room, the light sources in it need tobe flexible to meet diverse requirements. The central meeting-point in a livingroom is often the seating group. In thisarea, lighting should be positioned to suitpersonal needs.Decentralised luminaire arrangement[23] Ceiling spots set accents on the walland make the room look larger.[24,26] Standalone luminaires beside thesofa provide light for reading and strike ahomely note in the room. To enable the lighting to cater to different moods, it should bedimmable. To enable the specific requirements ofthe various zones of a living room to bemet, a “decentralised“ arrangement ofdifferent luminaires is recommended. Thiszone lighting is combined with indirectroom lighting that illuminates the ceiling. The general lighting in a living room shouldprovide the background illuminancerequired – preferably with dimming control – and deliver indirect, diffuse light thatsubtly supports the accent lighting. Helpingto reduce marked lighting contrasts in theroom, it guards against visual fatigue. Wideangled and general-diffuse wall, ceilingor standalone luminaires offer appropriatelighting solutions. In museums or hotels, luminous ceilings orcove luminaires (see lighting tip) are oftenused for indirect lighting. This type of lighting can also enhance a private living room.25Lighting tip:Indirect room lightingCove lighting [25]: Coving is the curvingtransition between wall and ceiling. Luminaires installed here deliver an indirect, diffuse light. This creates the impression thatthe ceiling is floating in the air. To achieveuniform light distribution with no dark zones, coving is fitted with linear fluorescent lampsoverlapping at the ends or with LEDs. Forrooms without coving, luminaires are available with housings which form the covingthemselves.2615

licht.wissen 14 Ideas for Good Home LightingLuminous ceilings bathe a room in diffuselight and create the impression of a kind ofcourtyard with open sky overhead. As analternative for the home, the market offersindividual large-area luminaires, whichcreate a similar effect. With RGB-controlledLEDs or fluorescent lamps, there is alsothe possibility of introducing coloured orcolour-changing light.[27] Clip-on luminaires can cast shelves ormirrors in a dramatic light and draw attentionto interesting details.[28] Wall luminaires set accents and createdecorative patterns of reflected light on thewall.[29] A variety of light sources enables lighting levels in the kitchen, dining table andlounge area to be adjusted as required.[31] A high-intensity uplight provides softindirect room lighting and makes for goodbackground illuminance.2716Controls and switchesIntelligent positioning of control elements, such as switches, is crucial for ensuringthat correct lighting is quickly, flexibly andeasily accessible. They should always belocated where they are needed: 1) at theside of the door and 2) in the zone in whichthe luminaire is used, e.g. at the sofa, inthe work corner or at the TV set.Accent and zone lighting for the living roomZone lighting is provided by free-standing, table or pendant luminaires, e.g. overthe coffee table. The brighter lightingzones thus produced lend structure to theroom and enliven the atmosphere. The general rule is: to optimise the impactof lighting accents, it is important to ensure that they stand out clearly from thegeneral lighting.28But how can switches and other controlelements be positioned where they areneeded? That is very easy: thanks tomodern wireless technology they can beglued or screwed in place at any pointin the room without the need for cabling. For maximum flexibility, a mobile remotecontrol system can be added. Lights canthen be conveniently operated without getting up, e.g. from reading in an armchair orworking at a table.

2930Lighting tip:TelevisionTV lighting [30]: At and around the televisionset, lighting should be variable. For readingor for working at a PC, the area around thescreen should be illuminated by low-luminance diffuse light. This reduces the brightness contrast between screen and background and prevents early fatigue.Wall or table luminaires providing diffuse lightbehind or beside the television set create a relaxing, agreeable lighting atmosphere. Thereare also TV sets on the market with integratedbackground lighting.Important note: To rule out annoying reflections, care should be taken to ensure thatlight, e.g. from ceiling spots, is not directed atthe screen.3117

Reading lightAny part of a living room used for readinghas special lighting requirements. First ofall, directional light is important for illuminating the reading area; secondly, attention needs to be paid to the ambient lighting. It is not advisable to bathe the bookin bright light and leave the background indarkness. This would present the eye witha constant need to compensate for markeddifferences in brightness. Which invariablyresults in early visual fatigue.Good background illuminance in the room– and thus comfortable reading light - isachieved with uplights or wallwashers forindirect lighting. Bright wall surfaces reflectthe light softly and evenly into the room. Toenable the lighting to be adjusted to different personal needs, all luminaires shouldbe dimmable.reading area. Uplights and wall or clampluminaires with an adjustable armmounted luminaire head are also wellsuited for the purpose. The luminaire canthus be flexibly re-positioned if the seatedor reclining reader moves.Good colour rendering – and thus a genuinely good read – is achieved, in particular, through the use of halogen lamps with acolour rendering index of Ra 100.Simultaneous room use with differentlighting requirementsLiving rooms are often used by differentpersons for different activities at the sametime. To ensure that one person‘s readinglight does not interfere with another person‘s work at a laptop by creating disturbing reflections on the screen, all luminairesin the room should be appropriatelypositioned, angled and shielded. The best place for a light source is alongside or behind the reader. This ensures thatthe eye is not dazzled by either direct lightfrom the front or reflected light on the paper. As a general rule, an older person needstwice as much light as a youngster toexperience the same sense of brightnessfor good visual performance. Sensitivity toglare also increases significantly with age.[32-34] A comfortable chair and free-standing luminaire make for a snug reading area.[33] Shade luminaires lend themselves wellto the use of energy-saving compact fluorescent lamps.Free-standing side lights with adjustableshades provide sufficient brightness for the35Lighting tip:Reading lightCombined room and reading light [35]Uplights with an integrated, adjustable armprovide bright room lighting and accentuated reading light. Ideally, both light sourcesshould be separately dimmable. Ensure thatthe arm-mounted luminaire head permitsflexible adjustment. To avoid glare, the lightshould fall on the book from above andbehind or from above and at the side of thereader. Good specialist lighting shops offera large selection of combined luminaires – indesigns ranging from traditional to modernand with a wide variety of lamp types.333419

licht.wissen 14 Ideas for Good Home Lighting36[36-38] ] A track system delivers light towhere it is needed – regardless of where thepower outlet is located. The freely positionablespots on the track set accents and highlightselected objects in the room.20[37] Many track systems can be used vertically as well as horizontally. They thus enablelight to be harnessed to underline and accentuate special architectural features.

Track systems are effective lighting toolsand problem-solversTrack systems are ideal lighting tools, offering innumerable possibilities for customised lighting design throughout the home. They can be used both for general roomlighting with wide-angle room or ceilingfloods and for accent lighting with spots onfurniture, pictures or plants.Because spots, floods and pendantluminaires are easy to reposition on thetrack, they can be placed wherever theyare needed at any time. For a party, forexample, where the table is extended fora buffet, the light sources can simply berepositioned to meet the new, temporaryrequirements. An even better lighting solution for such occasions could be achievedby providing additional luminaires or spotsand adjusting the system accordingly.Care must be taken, however, to ensurethat the maximum capacity of the system37is not exceeded. In the case of low-voltagesystems, it is particularly important tocheck that the sum of the watt ratings ofthe spots is no greater than the „VA rating“of the transformer. A 300VA transformer, for example, has the capacity to operate amaximum of 15 spots with a 20W rating orsix spots with a 50W rating. Many track systems have more than oneelectrical circuit. This makes it possible, forexample, for the lights that illuminate thetable to be switched off while others continue to highlight pictures on the wall. Foroptimum convenience, wireless systemscan be used to permit every single light tobe individually switched and/or dimmed.Track systems are also a good solutionwhere – as is unfortunately often thecase – only a single ceiling outlet is available in the middle of the room. A tracksystem can deliver light in straight lines, around corners or in curving arrange-ments to wherever it is needed. To makethe room appear larger, systems shouldbe wall-oriented and follow the contoursof the room. However, a converse arrangement can also be used to achievea specific effect. Track lighting that runsacross a long, narrow room, for example, makes the room look shorter. And lighting suspended well below a high ceilingmakes the ceiling seem lower. The geometrical - and thus interiordesign - possibilities of track systemsare endless. Installable in linear, L orT-shaped, cruciform, oval or undulatingarrangements, they allow the imagination full rein. A specialist lighting retailer, electrical engineer or lighting designercan help you select and assemble theright lighting system. For safety, the installation work shouldalways be done by a professional.3821
