March 29Robert was a Lance Corporal at the time and was awardedthe Military Medal for gallantry during the battle, beingpromoted to the rank of Sergeant shortly afterwards.His award was published in the London Gazette of 9December 1916. Robert continued to serve with thebattalion and was taken prisoner during the German SpringOffensive of March 1918. He was taken to Prisoner of WarCamps at Munster and Cassel and was nally repatriated on14 December 1918.As he had enlisted for the duration of the war, Robert wasdemobilised from the Army on 29 March 1919. Ondemobilisation, Robert initially relocated to Glengormley, butlater emigrated to Canada.In January 1920 in the New Year’s Honours List, Robert wasawarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for gallantrythroughout the war, the award being published in theLondon Gazette of 30 January 1920.Remembered with Honour.Belfast Weekly Telegraph 29/03/1941Sandy Row bar man awarded DSM forDunkirkRN. Son of Mrs Graham, Charles St.,South(Sandy Row), Belfast.On this Day - March 29191529th March 1915 Northern Whig (30th)Soldiers' Narrow Escape from Drowning Comrade'stimely RescueSix men from Ballykinlar Camp had a narrow escape onSaturday evening as they were returning to camp fromDundrum to the camp by ferryboat, which was accidentalyoverturned a short distance from the Dundrum leadingstage, with the result that the men were precipitated ontothe water. Fortunately the accident was seen by othersoldiers and shermen on the wharf, and Lance-CorporalArmstrong, No. 3 Company 15th Battalion Royal Irish Ri es,immediately plunged into the water to render assistance tothe struggling men, one of whom was exhausted andunconscious from the effects of the icy-cold water. He wasbrought ashore by Armstrong, and efforts were at oncemade to restore consciousness, the police renderingvaluable assistance. Burials made during 1916, 1917 and 1918 are contained inPlot II and these were made at that time by the ghting unitsor eld ambulances in position near PozièresAll other graves were brought to this cemetery after theArmistice in November 1918. Most of the graves werebrought here from battle eld burials in the vicinity of thiscemetery. Most of these casualties were British andCommonwealth soldiers who were killed in the surroundingelds during the autumn battles of the 1916 Battle of theSomme. Some were casualties discovered in isolated burialplots and small cemeteries from the ghting in August 1918There are now 2,758 Commonwealth servicemen buried orcommemorated in this cemetery. 1,380 of the burials areunidenti ed but there are special memorials to 23 casualtiesknown or believed to be buried among them. Pozieres Memorial, FrancSergeant John Brangam M.M.9th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers K.I.A. 29 March1918 No known gravBallymoney born Sergeant John Brangam was decoratedwith the Military Medal for his bravery on 20 November 1917during the Battle of Cambrai. His battalion had reached thefront line trenches with little opposition, but were then haltedby intense re from German machine guns. SergeantBrangam crept around the right ank of the German line andmanaged to get close enough to bomb a machine gun post,killing two German soldiers and taking two prisoners. Thisaction allowed his company to advance and take theGerman line. On the third day of the battle the Germanslaunched a strong counter-attack. As all the other of cers inthe 9th Battalion were casualties, Sergeant Brangamassumed the command and forced back the Germanoffensive. Sergeant John Brangam was killed in action on29 March 1918. He was an Associate of Institute ofCommerce.He enlisted in the North Irish Horse at Antrim on19/11/1915 and sent to France on 27/07/1916 as areinforcement to the 1st North Irish Horse Regiment, but hewas later transferred to the 9th Battalion, Royal IrishFusiliers and was renumbered as 41453. HUGHES, JameRoyal Irish Fusiliers, 1st Btn. 4517 Company QuartermasterSergeant. MM. 4517. Died 29/03/1918James Hughes MM, a fruit dealer and widower from JohnStreet, Portadown, was a pre-war member of the ArmaghRegiment, Ulster Volunteer Force. He was also a SpecialReservist and on the outbreak of war he had been mobilisedand posted to the 1st Royal Irish Fusiliers, with which hewent to France on 22 August 1914. He was wounded in theface in October 1916 and earned a Military Medal in theghting at the Chemical Works at Roeux in April and May1917Posted to the 9th Royal Irish Fusiliers after he hadrecovered, he was appointed Company QuartermasterSergeant in ‘A’ CompanyAt Ollezy, on the southern bank of the River Somme, on 23March the Battalion fought a gallant rearguard action duringwhich Company Quartermaster Sergeant Hughes ‘wentforward with a Lewis gun and knocked out an enemymachine-gun which was ring on our right ank. When theteam was disabled, although wounded himself, he kept thegun in action until reinforcements came up.’ So recorded thecitation of his Distinguished Conduct MedalHughes, having been wounded in this action, was laterdeclared missing in the period 21-28 March and nallydeclared killed in action on 29 March.
