What wehave learned from them has caused us to build more of acommunity within our agency, making us stronger and betterpositioned to serve the public."Manning also presents to a cohort of new Cianbro leadersfrom all over the country each year. The group spends two orthree days in Portland, and then has eight weeks to apply whatthey’ve learned before coming to Pittsfield for their capstone. This year, Cianbro leadership students will find the traininghas a theme, based on the advice of former UCLA basketballcoach John Wooden. “He always taught his players threelessons,” Manning said. “Show up and do your best; beconsiderate and kind to others; and make your life yourmasterpiece. He ingrained that into their brains because it wasingrained into his brain by his father. So many good sayingslike this get passed down from older to younger. I think forMaine seniors, every one of them can relate to the idea ofmaking their life their masterpiece!”A roundabout path to a “worthy life”Dr. George Manningpresenting on leadershipfor Maine's AssociatedBuilders and Contractors.Manning said he wasn’t alwaysthis focused. “I was your typical collegestudent that would be a lifeguard or abar tender or that kind of guy,” he said.We needShared Living Providers& Direct Support ProfessionalsThroughout all Counties in MaineTraining ProvidedH. Aftergraduation, he was interested in the Peace Corps, but didn’twant to be away for another three years. Thesepeople are role models, whether it’s a grandpa, a CEO, oran older doctor. People are watching them, to learn whatthey need to do.”Dr. George Manning walking and talking withPeter Vigue, chairman of the board and formerCEO of Cianbro, on Cadillac Mountain.Manning advised that we all take a page from a Danishphilosopher who stated that there are two kinds ofpeople in the world – drifters and drivers, i.e. giversand takers.“What the world needs is driving givers, notdrifting takers, so older people need to model that goingforward. They have got to speak up and have their wordsbe known because they are experienced. They knowthings. People may disregard, or say yes or no, but atleast they would be saying what they think, and theyneed to do that.”Robotic AssistedKnee Replacementsfeet ruled that out. Luckily, Manning discovered a peoplecentered psychology program at the University of Cincinnati. And while pondering Karl Marx’s theory that how a societydoes its work determines most other things about that society,Manning became fascinated by workplace psychology andhow that might impact everything.“I thought to myself, if the world of work really is that important, what if we could help morale be higher and productivity behigher in all jobs, from nursing to engineering. That would bea worthy life,” he recalled.“So I bought into the psychology ofthe workplace in my heart.”After graduation, Manning held a labor relations job with FordMotor Company while also studying for his doctorate. In thelate 1960s, cutbacks led to Manning accepting a severancepackage from Ford and finishing his doctorate ASAP.9 MAINE SENIORSDr. Akhil SastryYork Hospital Surgery CenterDr. Tyler WelchROBOTIC ASSISTED KNEE REPLACEMENTSAT Y O R K H O S P I TA LYork Hospital with Dr. Akhil Sastry, Dr. William Sutherland and Dr. Tyler Welchof Atlantic Orthopaedics are pleased to offer Robotic Assisted KneeResurfacing - an innovative treatment option designed to relieve the paincaused by joint degeneration due to osteoarthritis.Dr. Akhil Sastry was the first in Maine & NH to perform a robotic-assistedknee replacement surgery and trains people from all over the country in thiscutting edge procedure. The pair was golfing, as Manning tellsit, and Keith asked Eastwood, who was making a newmovie, how he kept up this pace. Clintwood replied thathe gets up in the morning and “doesn’t let the old manin.” Keith pondered that, and wrote the song, Don’t Letthe Old Man In, which ended up in the soundtrack forEastwood’s movie, The Mule.“This is a good thing for people to know about,” Manningsaid.“Clint Eastwood was being a good role model ofmaking his next act his best act, and this is a great exampleof collaboration between an older and younger person.Any older person can make their next act their best act, whether they’re a school crossing guard, serving lunches, volunteering at a hospital or starting a business – anythingthat’s going to be driving and giving, not drifting and taking.”JUNE 2019 1 0

Gauckler-Manning equation, it is much more commonly known simply as the Manning equation or Manning formula in the United States. This formula gives the relationship among several parameters of interest for uniform flow of water in an open channel. Not only is the Manning equation empirical, it is also a dimensional equation.

The Manning Equation is a widely used empirical equation that relates several uniform open channel flow parameters. This equation was developed in 1889 by the Irish engineer, Robert Manning. In addition to being empirical, the Manning Equation is a dimensional equation, so the units must be specified for a given constant in the equation.

the Manning formulation and of the Colebrook-White equation. In essence, the Manning formula has a limited range of ap-plicability. For instance, they showed that the value of the Manning n varies by more than 10-percent when approximating the smooth flow zone, figure 2. This zone is obviously out-side the range of applicability of Mannings .
