LESSON TENFood for One MoreReferences1 Kings 17:7-24;Prophets and Kings,pp. 129-132Memory Verse“The God of allgrace . . . will himselfrestore you and makeyou strong”(1 Peter 5:10).Monthly ThemeGrace is the gift of life. The Bible Lesson at a GlanceGod tells Elijah to go to Zarephath, where a widow will feedhim. Elijah finds the widow gathering firewood. He asks for foodand tells her not to worry, there will be flour and oil for her tomake a meal, too. He promises her that she will not run out offlour and oil until it rains again. And she doesn’t. When her sondies, she thinks that God is punishing her for past sins. Elijah demonstrates God’s love when he takes the boy and prays for him,and he comes to life. This is a lesson about grace.ObjectivesThe children will:Know that life isprecious to God.Feel reassuredthat God caresabout whathappensto them.Respond bytaking theirproblems straightto God.The MessageEven though badthings may happen, Iknow God loves me.100 LESSON TENGod does not send bad things; they come from the enemy.“An enemy did this.” (See Matthew 13:24-30.) God often uses badsituations as an opportunity to show His grace, love, and power.Sometimes we have to wait for things to be resolved, but God willtake care of them in His time.Teacher EnrichmentIn Elijah’s time Zarephath was in the heart of Phoenicia, the country ruled by kings who worshipped Baal. Ahab wouldnever search for Elijah there. Zarephath is known in the NewTestament as Sarepta. Today it’s a small village on the coast of theMediterranean Sea known as Sarafand. The famine lasted a total of three and a half years. Elijahspent several months beside the Brook Kerith, but even takingthat into consideration, the widow’s oil and flour probably lastedfor at least two and a half years.Room DecorationsSee Lesson 9.www.gracelink.net/primary

2You Need: Bible-timescostumes firewood pita bread mixing bowl flour oil waterBible LessonExperiencing the StoryCharacters: The widow, Elijah, the widow’s sonProps: Bible-times costumes (oversizedT-shirts and bathrobes, etc.), firewood, pita bread, a mixing bowl, flour, oil, waterSetting: Elijah is hiding in the KerithRavine, to one side in front of the room.On the other side, the widow and her sonare picking up firewood.Instruct the children:When you say:They:ElijahPut thumbs up.Water/rain/drink Clap softly like rain.BreadRub tummy.Read or tell the story.Elijah (put thumbs up) is still hidingin Kerith Ravine from wicked King Ahab. And just as Elijah (put thumbs up) predicted, rain (clap softly like rain) has notfallen for months. The water (clap softlylike rain) in Brook Kerith has dried up. ButGod is still caring for Elijah (put thumbsup).“Go to Zarephath,” God says. “I havecommanded a widow there to take careof you.” So Elijah (put thumbs up) beginsa 100-mile journey north into the countryof Sidon. There, at the gate to Zarephath,he finds a widow gathering sticks.“Would you please bring me a littlewater (clap softly like rain) so I may havea drink?” (clap softly like rain) Elijah (putthumbs up) asks her. As she goes to bringwater (clap softly like rain), Elijah (putthumbs up) calls after her: “And wouldyou please bring me a piece of bread(rub tummy) too?”The woman stops. “I don’t have anybread (rub tummy),” she says. “All I have104 LESSON TENare a handful of flour and a little oil. Iwas just gathering some firewood so Icould mix up one last batch of bread(rub tummy) for my son and me. Andafter we eat that, we will die.”“Don’t be afraid,” Elijah (put thumbsup) tells her. “Go home and make me asmall piece of bread (rub tummy), andthen make something for yourself andyour son. For God says the oil and theflour will not be used up until the day theLord sends rain (clap softly like rain) onthe land.” (See 1 Kings 17:14.)Although this woman is not anIsraelite, she believes in God and placesher faith in Him. She takes Elijah (putthumbs up) home and bakes bread (rubtummy) for the three of them. After thatday, whenever she needs to bake bread(rub tummy), there is just enough flourand oil. They never run out. God sentElijah (put thumbs up) to this woman toprotect his life. And God’s grace workingto save Elijah (put thumbs up) also keptthe woman and her son alive. Some time later the widow’s sonbecomes sick and dies. Her first thoughtis that God must be punishing her. “Whatdo You have against me?” she cries outin her sorrow. “Did You come to remindme of my sin and kill my son?”Of course, God has not caused theboy to die. Life is precious to God. God’sgrace has kept all three of them fromstarvation. So Elijah (put thumbs up) takesthe boy upstairs to the room where hestays and cries to God. “O Lord, my God,let this boy’s life return to him!” Godanswers Elijah’s (put thumbs up) prayer, and the boy comes back to life. When Elijah (put thumbs up) givesthe boy back to his mother, she knowsfor sure that her life is precious to God.Because of God’s grace, your life is precious to God too.www.gracelink.net/primary

3You Need: BibleApplying the LessonA. Pleasing GodShare the following information withthe children:People pay special tribute to othergods in different ways around the world.People in other parts of the world pray, give offerings, light incense or candlesand pray or wish for eternal life, a happyfamily, good fortune, good health, andother desirable things. In Thailand, people buy a piece ofgold paper to put on their idol, coveringthe entire idol with gold. They believethis pleases the gods.In India, people throw coins to theidol by the highway so their journey willbe safe.In many countries, people worship their dead ancestors. On a certainday each year, they bring that person’sfavorite food to the cemetery and burna paper model of a house, believing thispleases the dead. Vietnamese families, forinstance, create shrines in their homes inhonor of deceased loved ones, offeringfood and flowers each year at that time.Japanese Buddhists clean theirhomes and prepare special foods.Cemeteries and streets are ablaze withthe light from lanterns and bonfires, which are meant to show the spirits theway. In Mexico the dead are honored witha festive holiday. Families take picnics tothe cemeteries where their relatives areburied.Funerals in Ghana are also happyoccasions. It is believed that the deadlook after the living, which is cause forrejoicing.106 LESSON TENDebriefingAsk: How is our God different fromthese gods? (We don’t have to performrituals or give Him something to makeHim like or love us. We don’t worry thatbad things are caused by angry gods.) Dowe have to earn the favor of our God?(No. The things God gives us are His freegifts to us.) Christianity is the only religion in the world that doesn’t requirepeople to earn their salvation or toearn favor with the gods. Read aloud1 Peter 1:8, 9. Remember our messagefor today:EVEN THOUGH BAD THINGSMAY HAPPEN, I KNOW GODLOVES ME.B. Bad Versus GoodForm two groups. Have one groupcall out bad things that may happen, suchas: “I fell down and cut my leg.” The othergroup calls out something positive, suchas: “Someone cleaned the cut and tookcare of it.” Change groups every fourththing so that each group calls out bothbad and good things that happen to children.DebriefingAsk: Does God want bad things tohappen to us? (No.) Remember lastweek’s lesson? God said that no rainwould fall. Why did the rain stop?(Because the king and the people wereworshipping idols.) Bad things happenbecause sin is in the world. God doesn’twant anything bad to happen, but evenwhen it does, He still loves and cares forus. Let’s say our message together:EVEN THOUGH BAD THINGSMAY HAPPEN, I KNOW GODLOVES ME.www.gracelink.net/primary

His family was hungrytoo. They had not had any food for threedays. Their father had gone to try to findsomething. But he came back with nothing.“I’m sorry,” he said. “There is no rice left in ourvillage. It has not rained for many months.Without rain, things will not grow. We maynot have any food for a long, long time.”Just when they thought they would die,God sent help. A truck with a sign that saidADRA came to their village. “Rice, rice!” thedriver called. “Each family may have onebag of rice!”Soon each family in the village hadenough rice to last for several days. Moretrucks came during the long months untilrain came again.A long time ago God took care of Elijahin a special way too.It hadn’t rained in Israel in months. The fields were brown and dead. Baretrees stood like skeletons against the hotsky. The rivers and streams had dried up.And finally, even the Brook Kerith, whereElijah had been hiding from King Ahab, ran dry. But God was still caring for Elijah.“Go to Zarephath,” God said. “I havetold a widow there to take care of you.”So Elijah left Israel and traveled morethan 100 miles away, to another country. There, at the gate toZarephath, a widowwas gatheringsticks.“Would youplease bring mea little water in ajar?” Elijah askedher. “And wouldyou please bringme some bread, too?”The woman108 LESSON TENhad turned to go get the water. But shestopped when Elijah asked for bread. “Idon’t have any bread,” she said. “All I haveare a handful of flour and a little oil. I’mgathering firewood so I can bake somebread for my son and me. And after weeat that, we will die.”“Don’t be afraid,” said Elijah. “Go homeand make me a small piece of bread. Thenmake something for yourself and yourson. For God says the oil and the flour willnot be used up until He sends rain on theland.” (See 1 Kings 17:14.)This woman was not an Israelite. Butshe believed in God and placed her faith inHim. She decided to trust God to take careof her needs. It happened just as Elijah said itwould. He went home with her, and shemade some bread for him. After that day, whenever she went to bake bread, therewas just enough flour and oil. The flourand oil never ran out. The miracle Godworked to save Elijah also saved the livesof this woman and her son. Some time later this woman’s sonbecame sick and died. Her first thoughtwas that God was punishing her. “What doYou have against me?” she cried out in hersorrow. “Did You come to remind me ofmy sin and kill my son?”Of course God had not caused theboy to die. God’s grace brings the gift oflife. God’s grace had kept all three of themfrom dying during the famine.Elijah had been staying in an upstairsroom at the widow’s house. He took theboy to that room and cried to God, “OLord, my God, let this boy’s life return tohim!” God answered Elijah’s prayer. Atonce the boy came back to life.God cares about the problems in yourlife too. Even though bad things sometimeshappen, God still loves you. He wantsyou to trust Him.
