Heart of Ohio ChapterNewsletterVolume 13 issue 1The Front EndQ1 2016Page 4 December- Holiday Party at Buffalo Wingsand RingsTech Article- Upgrading the 1997-2001TPS System –Tom FetchikThe HoO gang celebrated the holiday season atBuffalo Wings and Rings in Columbus. 20 HoOmembers and spouses were in attendance. Agreat way to end 2015!It’s a long story, but I ended up buying back my 2000Nassau Blue Convertible this year. It had only 4000more miles than when I sold it in 2005! With 14,000miles I was concerned about the condition of theoriginal tires as I planned to run this car on the NCMCaravan in August. The decision to replace tires is always a concern, thistime more so as I did not want to lose the original tiresand wheels. Just maybe, someday, NCRS will want tojudge them on the car! Fortunately I had purchased aset of spare wheels for the 2006 convertible I just soldand now had a replacement choice.Even if I replaced the tires on the original wheels, Iwould need to consider the original Tire PressureSensors. The battery in them is good for about 10years and it doesn’t matter how many miles are on thetires. If new tires are going to be put on the car, Ineeded to replace the TPS in each wheelWhat to do?Reading a number of articles I came to theunderstanding that the 1997-2000 TP sensor wasobsolete and looking around the replacement modulesfor the early C5’s were very expensive (around 150each!). There are more cost effective modules for the2001-2004 Corvette, however, the receiver modulewould need to change as well as the key fobs.Upgrading to the 2001-2004 system, however, did offera better operation as the range of the fobs is greatlyenhanced.I researched the use of the larger wheels on the C52000 Convertible and found that the change is possibleand pretty straight forward. All that is needed is a ¼inch spacer behind the rear wheel to align themproperly with the body due to the offset of the wheelPage 4 of 10

I got in a panic and startingsearching hi and low for others. Eventually, the modulewas shipped and was able to start the installation.(1) #2 Key FOBI had the new tires mounted on the 2006 rims with thenew upgraded TP sensors. When I started to drive, without the module, I always had the warning on theDIC that the module was not receiving data from thewheels.(1) Remote Control Door Lock ReceiverInstalling the new module:(1) Remote Control Door Lock Receiver ConnectorWhen I went to install the module the first item on myagenda was to preserve the harness an connector forthe original module, just in case I needed to put theoriginal wheels and tires back on the car.(1) #1 Key FOB(4) Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensors (TPMS)(4) Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensor Mounting NutsThe TPS and hardware look something like this:The instructions sent with the module are very easy tofollow. The only change I made was to wire the newmodule connector in parallel with the old connector. That way I could easily switch back to the originalmodule when I needed to.Page 5 of 10

Mustangs are in T-2. The plan is to let the C5 into the T-2 class, with a restrictor plate. Another sanctioning body has already heavily restricted the C6 on horsepower. You may remember The General put together a Corvette TV commercial mentioning that fact. It ends with the phrase, “just to make it fair.” The SCCA seems to have a good idea.
