ForewordForewordPublic statements of ourstewardship and our progress, are asked of us as part of ouraccountability for the work wedo and the resources entrustedto our care. They remind usboth of what we have achievedand of the challenges we face, especially at a time of challengeand opportunity. The period under review is apreface to another milestone inthe history of the Institute, our40th anniversary. It is markedby inexorable change, in thecommunity we serve, in widersociety and in the economy thatprovides opportunities for ourstudents and dictates the levelof funding we are given to helpachieve the ambitious objectivesof our Strategic Plan, ‘A Strategyfor Change 2009 – 2012’.This Report records some ofour achievements during theperiod autumn 2008 – autumn2010. Towards the end of theperiod, we said goodbye to ourlong serving Chairman of theGoverning Body, Councillor JoeQueenan. In paying tribute to ouroutgoing Chairman and warmlywelcoming our new Chairman,Mr Ray MacSharry, I would liketo place on the formal recordthe gratitude of our staff andstudents for the wise counseland spirit of community servicethat each member of ourGoverning Body brings to thegovernance of the Institute. This is not a chronicle ofprogress during these twoyears; it is merely a series ofsnapshots. However, it doesillustrate both the changes inour physical environment and inour new operating environment.4IT Sligo Annual Report 2008-2009 & 2009-2010A proud achievement was thecompletion in late 2010 ofour 12 million DevelopmentPlan. Included in the CapitalProgramme were the newtechnology building, the threestorey Yeats Library, the newStudent Services Centre andgreatly enhanced teaching, research and sports facilities. This was a significant stepforward in providing our staff andstudents with a working, learningand recreational environmentfitting for the demands we askof them in the second decadeof the 21st century. Anothermilestone took place in October2010 when the President, MaryMcAleese, came to the campusto officially inaugurate theYeats Library.Members of staff and studentshave brought distinction toIT Sligo in many fields ofachievement during the pasttwo years and the number ofnational accolades given tothem continues to increase.Space permits only a flavour ofthese good news stories, but theReport provides a sense of thenational and international profilethat their work has brought tothe Institute and the region. At the heart of our mission isthe role of the Institute in theNorth West as a regional hubfor higher education, research, technology and knowledgetransfer and innovation. In2009, we re-launched ourInnovation Centre and it is nowamongst the foremost agents ofgrowth and regeneration in thearea, providing support to startup businesses and brokering acrucial and creative relationshipbetween higher education, industry and commerce.of change is without the meansof its own conservation”.In conclusion, I speak withconfidence for the future incommending the record thatappears in the pages thatfollow. It is testament to thespirit of renewal and communityempowerment that is at theheart of our regional andnational mission. The economic backdrop tothe period has resulted in asurge of people, of all agesand backgrounds, entering andreturning to higher educationto acquire internationallyrecognised qualifications andupdate their skills in the lightof emerging knowledge. It wasparticularly gratifying that weexperienced our highest everintake of full time studentsin 2010.On behalf of the Governing Body,I would like to pay public tributeto each member of the IT Sligoacademic community, membersTheCentrerelaunchedinof staffand ts and graduates and ouraddressby leadingmany partnersfrom entrepreneurindustrialmentorLarryFarrell.and professional life who investour work with knowledge andTheHarvardBusinessSchoolideasand makeit relevantto thetrainedCEOoftheFarrellrealities of today.Company, who represent manyblueclientsincluding,It haschipbeensaid thatanIBM,AMEXandCocaCola.Heinstitution “without themeansenthralled attendees with several‘one-on-one’ discussions andby offering invaluable advicethroughout the proceedings.Mr Farrell reminded theassembled mix of businesspeople, graduates and studentsof the real value of buddingentrepreneurs, especially duringrecessionary times:from his father he emphasisedthat it can take very little to starta company as long as the personhas belief and commitment inthemselves and their productor service.“It’s during a recession, assome fine peopleare laid off,ProfessorTerri ScottthatmoreentrepreneursPresidentemerge to ‘give it a go ontheir own’”, he said.
