Wonderland No More“Deluxe” Updateinternally consistent in your owncampaign.“Oh, much better!” cried theQueen, her voice rising into asqueak as she went on. “Muchbe-etter! Be-etter! Be-e-e-etter!Be-e-ehh!” The last word endedin a long bleat, so like a sheepthat Alice quite started.Still, there are a few minor issuesthat we felt could use addressing, and some new powers to expandthe repertoire of spellcasters inWonderland. In our attempt to keep upwith the times, we’ve reviewedWonderland No More in light ofthe several changes and additionsintroduced in the much betteredition of Savage Worlds Deluxe.PowersA few of the powers in SavageWorlds Deluxe are clarified ortweaked in ways that could impacttheir use in Wonderland No More, plus entirely new powers have beenadded. The good news is that there reallyare no big compatibility issues. Afew powers are tweaked, and a fewnew character options are added, but the important thing—whetheryou’re using the Explorer’s Editionor the Deluxe rules—is just to beChanges to ExistingPowersLast updated: May 4th, 2012.Editing, layout, and miscellaneous nonsense byT. Jordan Peacock. Wonderland No More is a creationof Kevin L. Anderson, inspired by the works of LewisCarroll. Additional Targets: Several powers now havethe option of “additional targets,” expandingthe number of characters that can be affected bythe power by spending a like number of PowerPoints. Those changes apply to the appropriateWonderland No More powers if you are usingSavage Worlds Deluxe. Blast: Now considered a Heavy Weapon effect. Bolt: When using the option to fire a 3d6 damagebolt, you can only use that for a single bolt, notfor a “1-2-3” blast of 3d6 bolts in a single casting. Elemental Manipulation: Now offers all fourelements for a single purchase of the power. Light/Obscure: Now merged into a single power—two for the price of one! For any power list thatindicated one power or the other, the caster getsthe use of both effects (but of course must choosewhich one at the time of casting). Healing: Additional clarification has been made inDeluxe on the use of this power upon Extras.

Unsuitable PowersThe following new powers in Savage Worlds Deluxeare not recommended for use with Wonderland NoMore. Banish: Being “native” to any “plane of existence”is not a relevant concept for Wonderland. Divination: Answers are not so convenientlyprovided in Wonderland by a simple spell. Growth/Shrink: The power as defined inWonderland No More is still usable in its currentform. (It won’t break anything, however, if theGM chooses to use the Deluxe version instead forhis own campaign, for the sake of consistency.) Mind Reading: Wonderland’s inhabitants are oftentoo mad for this to work anyway, but the bottomline is just that it’s potentially unbalancing.New Powers and TrappingsThe following are new powers from Savage WorldsDeluxe that are available to various Arcane Backgroundsin Wonderland. Some Arcane Backgrounds get the lion’sshare of the powers, but this is based more on what fitsthe theme rather than “fairly” delivering a comparablenumber of powers to each background.GourmancyAs before, unless noted, Gourmantic powers only affectthe person or creature that consumes the Foodstuff.Random Disguise TableIn the event that a Magic Foodstuff of disguise isfound as an item of treasure, or via foraging, roll 1d20and consult this table to determine the shape of thecookie (and what or who the disguise is of):1234567891011121314151617181920Alice (at age 7 and a half, exactly). The White Rabbit. The Mad Hatter. The March Hare. The Cheshire Cat’s grin. The Queen of Hearts. The Vorpal Sword. The Gryphon. The White Knight. The Red Knight. The Jabberwock.Kitty, the Black Kitten.Snowdrop, the White Kitten. The Sheep Shopkeeper.Humpty Dumpty’s Wall. The Queen’s Executioner. The Caterpillar.Mr. Lewis Carroll. The Wasp in a Wig.The Looking Glass.Don’t forget that a disguise confers only theappearance of the entity, not any powers or abilities. For powers with a detrimental effect (e.g., blind orconfusion), the victim has to be tricked into eating. For powers with variable effects (e.g., light/obscure),the effect must be chosen at the time the Foodstuff iscreated.Blind (N)Confusion(N)Darksight(N)Disguise (S)Drain PowerPoints (H)A dark chocolate cake, tempting anddelicious—but it has the unfortunateside effect of bathing the consumerin a tightly-clinging shadow that blotsout light, temporarily blinding her.A confusing casserole or confectionwith a cacophony of curious contents!Rabbiteye blueberry pie causes theeater’s eyes to glow faintly blue, andto see in darkness.A frosted gingerbread cookie suggeststhe appearance of a particular entity(or object). Whoever consumes it isimmediately disguised convincingly asthat creature or thing. This hollow chocolate candy has amagically draining effect on the eater.Farsight (S)Havoc (S)Slumber (S)Succor (N)A plate of candied carrots improvesthe eater’s eyesight considerably.A jumping bean casserole has aviolent effect on the consumerand anyone standing nearby, as hericochets around.Special: The area of effect is centeredon the consumer. The consumer isalso affected, but resists with Spiritrather than Strength; if he succeeds,he may voluntarily still be affected, but chooses the direction he flies in,and how far (up to 12”).A hot milk posset (enchanted to staywarm) lulls the consumer into apeaceful slumber. This enchanted and invigoratingcup of tea can be served even to anunconscious recipient to wake him.

Wall Walker(N)Warrior’sGift (S)This cupcake has icing on it in aspiderweb design, and grants aspider-like ability to cling to walls. This power is embodied in a widerange of specialized desserts, such asBlocking Brickle, Dodging Drizzle,Frenzied Fruitcake, or MarksmanshipMeringue. It grants the eater theCombat Edge that was “baked in” bythe Gourmancer.HaberdasheryRandom Warrior’s Gift TableConfusion(N)In the event that a Magic Foodstuff of warrior’s giftis found as an item of treasure, or via foraging, roll 1d20and consult this table to determine the dessert type andwhat Edge is granted when the Foodstuff is consumed:1234567891011121314151617181920Blocking Brickle (Block).Brawling Brownie (Brawler).Reflexive Rum Cake (Combat Reflexes).Un-Friendship Bread (Counterattack).Dodging Drizzle (Dodge).Banana Elan Pudding (Elan).First Strike Studel (First Strike).Almond Florentine (Florentine).Fruitcake Frenzy (Frenzy).Tiny Cupcake (Giant Killer).Hard Candy (Hard to Kill).Dessert Casserole (ImprovisationalFighter).Mincemeat Pie (Killer Instinct).Flatcakes (Level Headed).Marksman’s Meringue (Marksman).Steel Shaving Surprise (Nerves of Steel). No Mercy Meringue (No Mercy).Lady’s Fingers (Steady Hands).Broom Bristle Bread (Sweep).Bear Claws (Two-Fisted).Fireworks and music erupt fromthe Haberdasher’s hat, and randomobjects begin dancing and singingalong, in a loud, bright, andconfusing illusory performance.Special: Although the confusioneffect is instantaneous, the attentiongrabbing “trappings” persist forthe remainder of the Scene as amaintained power, or until theHaberdasher chooses to end it. Thishas no combat effect, per se, but it’spopular at parties!Miracles: Church of AliceConfusion(N)The Alician preacher quotes nonsenseverse directed at the victims, prompting an extreme case offlabbergastronomy*.(* Yes, that’s a nonsense word.)Pummel (S)Slumber (S)Succor (N)Special: This counts as a mindaffecting power, and must be heardby the victims in order to work. The caster throws a tantrum, screaming a protest (e.g., “GO AWAY!”or “NO FAIR!”) at the top of herlungs, bowling everyone over in ahurricane gust. The caster sings a lullaby, leadingtargets into dreamy slumber. The caster pulls a vial of smellingsalts out of a convenient pocket. While not as potent as the real thingis in Wonderland, they still stir therecipient to wakefulness.

Miracles: Spirit of ConflictBlind (N)DamageField (N)Farsight (S)Havoc (S)Pummel (S)SummonAlly (N)A blinding beam of holy light shootsfrom the Bishop’s staff.A quartet of tiny winged Pawnsflutters about the recipient, in theBaroque style of “putti” or “cherubs.”The creatures act as little heralds, waving palm branches, drapingbanners, tossing rose petals, etc. They’re harmless until someoneattacks, at which point they smack theoffender. The recipient has a vision of thesurroundings as if from the Hill ofSurveying, and thus gains a superiorvantage point for ranged attacks. The Bishop conjures a glowing chessboard, then violently upends thetable, causing a shock wave that sendsvictims flying like tossed chess pieces.A glowing, ghostly Rook is conjured, who rolls forward from the Bishop’sstaff. It grows in size as its moves, bowling over everyone and everythingin its way.The ally appears in a burst of holylight, and looks like a Chessmanof the same color as the caster. Itsstatistics are identical to the basic allytype, but appearances vary:Blind (N)Confusion(N)DamageField (N)Darksight(N)Disguise (S)Dire Wolf: A Knight’s wooden steed.Drain PowerPoints (H)Farsight (S)Elemental: A Knight, surrounded byan aura of the element (flames, ice, clouds, dust).Havoc (S)Bodyguard: A Pawn.Sentinel: A mighty, very large Rook.Warrior’sGift (S)Witch QueenSpecial (all): Regardless of the allytype, it is considered a “Chessman”for purposes of any powers andabilities that specifically affectChessmen or wooden entities. The Bishop blesses the recipientwith the power of the Eighth Square, imbuing him with a glowing aura.Intangibility(H)Pummel (S)Slumber (S)Succor (N)Creeping vines of magical shadowform a “blindfold” on the victim. The caster composes a “sphinx’sriddle” with no answer.Special: This counts as a mindaffecting and riddle-based power, forpurposes of Edges and Hindrances(e.g. Twisted Mind).Thorny vines sprout from the WitchQueen’s regalia. The recipient’s eyes radiate an auramatching the caster’s regalia color(e.g., red, white, or shadowy black),gaining sight in darkness.A swirl of vines and rose petalsobscures the caster briefly as shechanges into her new appearance.Dark thorny vines launch from thecaster’s scepter, bleeding away magic.Gusts of wind and a flurry of rosepetals guide the recipient’s rangedattacks to their target. An explosion of vines and rose petalssends enemies flying. The recipient transforms into a flurryof rose petals.Special: While the petals can slipthrough very small places, evencracks, passing through solid wallsis not possible with this power. Thisdrawback is offset by the fact that thepetals can fly at the recipient’s Pace.“Kneel before me!” the casterdemands, accompanied by a blastof rose petals from her outstretchedscepter.Using her scepter like a conductor’sbaton, the caster directs an unseenorchestra to perform a lullaby.A soft breeze accompanied by afluttering of rose petals and gardenaromas gently stirs the recipient.

SummonAlly (N)A rose-studded topiary bush springsfrom the ground, in the form of awarrior or beast serving the caster.Bodyguard: Topiary in shape of awarrior.Dire Wolf: Topiary in shape of aregal beast.Elemental:Fire—flaming topiary.Water—frost-covered topiary.Air—whirlwind of leaves and roses.Earth—rock pile sprouting roses.Sentinel: Thick tangle of thorns androses suggesting the form of a largearmored warrior.Wall Walker(N)Warrior’sGift (S)Special (all): All summoned alliesare treated as “animated plants” forpurposes of any powers and abilitiesthat specifically affect plants (orPlants), such as the Green ThumbEdge or the Gardening Shears (itemof wonder).Flowering creeper vines provide therecipient with a temporary walkwayto follow any wall or ceiling (sinceit would be unseemly for the WitchQueen or her champion to stoop toactually climbing anything). The caster gestures with her scepteras if “knighting” the recipient, granting him a new power . or, if sheis the recipient, she first conjures ahand mirror, to which she performsthe honors.Edges & HindrancesMost Edges and Hindrances in Savage Worlds Deluxewill work just fine in Wonderland No More.Hindrances Doubting Thomas: Wonderland natives aren’tDoubting Thomases. (Visitors might be, however.) Outsider: Not applicable to Wonderland natives, but if part of an imported racial package, it’s just apenalty to Charisma for whatever reason.Edges Beast Master, Champion, Gadgeteer, Holy/Unholy Warrior, Mentalist, Mr. Fix It, SoulDrain, and Wizard: As already indicated inWonderland No More, these Edges don’t fit fornatives of the setting. Beast Master is replaced bythe Beast Companion Edge. Adept: This professional Edge doesn’t really fit. Brave: This largely duplicates the Iced Waterfor Blood Edge, but that’s just fine. As a specialcase, if you really, really, most definitely, withouta question want to play the guy who never, ever(hardly ever) gets scared, you can take both Edgesand stack the bonus for 4 against Fear checks. Scavenger: This Edge conflicts with anddiminishes the Haberdashery conjure power, andhence isn’t appropriate for the setting. Thief, Woodsman: As detailed in Wonderland NoMore, both of these Edges are slightly modifieddue to the blurring of urban and wild environs.

New RulesThere are a few changes to the rules in Savage WorldsDeluxe that might or might not apply here. –3 Abilities: Neither one of these “abilities” issuitable for a unique race package. One attribute requires two points per step toraise.: Drop this option. Racial Enemy: This is discouraged, as it doesn’treally fit precedent; if used, it should be limited toone of the common races of Wonderland (Animal,Card, Chessman, Human, Plant, or Tweedle).RacesIn the spirit of “Sure, why not?” the new race templatespresented in Savage Worlds Deluxe could—with a bit ofwork—be shoehorned into Wonderland if you just tweakthe “trappings.” For example: Automaton (Android): Invented by the WhiteKnight on one of his more inspired days, this is aclockwork ballerina or steam-powered man. Mock Mock Turtle (Atlantean): A curious crossbetween bovine and soft-shelled turtle; also verywell educated, since it went to School.Making (Wonderland) RacesAt first glance, the “Making Races” section in SavageWorlds Deluxe might seem like a great tool for a GMtrying to accommodate the peculiar and wacky sorts ofcharacters players might want to play, if they get the ideathat they can play “anything” in Wonderland. However, care should be taken when using thissection to design new races for Wonderland No More, especially “unique” ones, as it lends itself to “gaming thesystem” when tailoring a race to fit a specific characterconcept. For example, a –2 “Ability” (drawback) that makesit more expensive to increase an attribute at charactercreation isn’t really much of a drawback at all if theplayer has already decided this is his “dump stat” thathe’s going to start off at d4.If you want to use Making Races as a guideline fordesigning “custom” Wonderland races for a specificcharacter concept, we would recommend the followingtweaks to the “Abilities” listed. Begin with a d8 in one attribute.: For ourpurposes, this should be a 4 Ability instead of 3. 10 Power Points.: This should be a 4 Abilityinstead of 2. Free Seasoned Edge/Free Novice Edge: Neitherof these are “regardless of requirements.” Thecharacter still has to meet the prerequisites. 5 Power Points.: Drop this option, and just gowith the Power Points Edge instead. Free d6 in a skill.: Drop this bargain option, and buy skills the usual way. Kite (Avion): An animated kite, either yourstandard diamond shape, or an imported silkChinese dragon kite; very wary of trees. Garden Gnome (Dwarf): Short, fond of smokingpipes and fishing (or smoking fish and piping),speaking in a German accent (even if he doesn’tactually speak German), and wears a red hat. Cobbler Elf (Elf): Helpful, dextrous, fond offixing things . and hopelessly accident-prone. Wee Folk (Half-Folk): Prone to dressing in green, smoking pipes, hanging around rainbows, runningaway from people trying to steal their gold, andtalking in outrageously “Irish” accents. Bogey (Half-Orc): Also known as bugaboo, boggelbugge, boogieman, etc.: a mish-mash ofbestial features, gruff disposition and a preferencefor the night (and tendency to sulk in the shadowsif forced to go about during the day). Scissors (Rakashan): Dreaded by Cards andother paper people everywhere! Serpent (Saurian): Nobody much likesss them, leassst of all Birdsss. Dessspite a complete lack ofhandsss, they manage to get by with a prehensssiletail and clever ussse of their coilsss.ChasesFortunately, there are no Chases in any of the releasedWonderland No More adventures (we checked!) so thechanges to the Chase rules don’t impact them at all. Ifthey come up in your own games, use whichever versionof the Chase rules you please.

edition of Savage Worlds Deluxe . The good news is that there really are no big compatibility issues. A few powers are tweaked, and a few new character options are added, but the important thing whether you re using the Explorer s Edition or the Deluxe rules is just to
