THE PROGRAM:FROM CLASSROOMS TOCOUNSELING SESSIONSThe UCLA Extension Alcohol and Drug AbuseCounseling Certificate is one of the mostcomprehensive programs of its kind. Not onlydoes it provide students with a thorougheducation and fundamental skillset, it alsoapplies these tools in a real world setting.CourseworkThe 11-course curriculum is designed to givestudents the skills and knowledge to becomehighly effective counselors. Subject to courseavailability, students can complete thecertificate in as little as a year and a half, or inthree years by taking a less intense scheduleof one course per quarter. This gives studentsthe opportunity to build a program schedulethat fits their life plan.Coursework covers counseling skills,emphasizing theory and application. TheUCLA Extension Alcohol and Drug AbuseCounseling Certificate is approved by theCalifornia Consortium of Addiction Programsand Professionals Education Institute(CCAPP-EI). This certificate meets theeducational requirements for those seekingprofessional certification from CCAPP and itscertification board, CCAPP Credentialing.THE BEST WAYTO LEARN IS TO DOInternship OpportunitiesPractical training is offered through fieldworkexperience—including an opportunity toparticipate in a two-quarter Supervised FieldWork Practicum course.Supervised Field Work Practicum(255 internship hours)This course is designed for students whohave completed the following prerequisitecourses in the Alcohol and Drug AbuseCounseling Certificate:R Com Hlt X 470.5: Introduction toCounseling and the 12 Core FunctionsR Com Hlt X 470.7: Individual CounselingSkillsR Com Hlt X 470.9: Group Counseling SkillsR Com Hlt X 470.10 Family Counseling SkillsStudents are assigned a minimum of 255hours of on-site agency internship and attend18 classroom meetings to gain supervisionand process case studies.Classroom meetings are a combination oflecture, supervision, and experientialprocesses. It is an environment wherestudents can take “safe risks” in expandingtheir counseling repertoire, while receivingsupport from their instructor and peers.Exercises include supervised groups to practicecounseling techniques, where studentsincrease confidence and knowledge byapplying their experience in the field.Students are encouraged to research facilitiesof interest to them at the beginning of theircoursework, and must secure their field workpracticum site and complete paperwork prior toenrolling in the Supervised Field WorkPracticum course.33
