University DayResolutionWHEREAS, the Board of Visitors of George Mason University desires to commem orate the history of George Mason University, from its establishment by theUniversity of Virginia as an extension for higher education in Northern Virginia toits present status as a comprehensive university; andWHEREAS, the town of Fairfax purchased and donated a permanent site for theschool, which was formally presented to the University of Virginia by Fairfax MayorJohn C. Wood in 1959; andWHEREUPON, the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia selected GeorgeMason College of the University of Virginia to be the permanent name of thecollege; andWHEREAS, the new campus, located at its present site, was dedicated in 1964 byGovernor Albertis S. Harrison Jr.; andWHEREAS, in 1972, House Bill 210, enacted by the General Assembly, amendedthe Code of Virginia to separate George Mason University from its parent institutionand to grant it university status; andWHEREAS, Governor Linwood A. Holton signed House Bill 210 into law on April 7,1972, thereby granting George Mason University its present stature;NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Visitors that, in recognition ofthese events, henceforth, April the Seventh shall be celebrated as UNIVERSITY DAY.—Board of Visitors, 1980

Forty-Five-YearService RecipientsJames BennettEconomicsJames T. Bennett is an Eminent Scholar at George MasonUniversity. He holds the William P. Snavely Chair of PoliticalEconomy and Public Policy in the Department of Economicsand is director of the John M. Olin Institute for EmploymentPractice and Policy. Bennett received his PhD from CaseWestern Reserve University in 1970 and has specialized inresearch related to public policy issues, the economics ofgovernment and bureaucracy, labor unions, and healthcharities. He is founder and editor of the Journal of LaborResearch and has published more than 60 articles inprofessional journals such as the American Economic Review,The Review of Economics and Statistics, Policy Review, PublicChoice, and Cato Journal.Stuart MalawerSchar School of Policy and GovernmentStuart Malawer joined the Mason Law School faculty in 1977, afterteaching at other universities for nine years. He has been teachingglobal trade relations and international law at the Schar School ofPolicy and Government for the past 20 years. While Malawer has hadnumerous professional accomplishments over his more than 50-yearcareer, his focus has always been on teaching and interacting withstudents and keeping in touch with them wherever they are located.As a result of his dedication, the Mason Alumni Association namedMalawer the Faculty of the Year in 2000.Stuart Malawer holds a PhD from the department of internationalrelations at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. He has aJD from the Cornell Law School and a diploma from The HagueAcademy of International Law. Fifty-Year Service RecipientJames TrefilPhysics, Robinson ProfessorsJames Trefil was born in Chicago and educated in public schools.After receiving a BS in physics from the University of Illinois, he won aMarshall Scholarship to Oxford University, where he read theoreticalphysics and the philosophy of science and received a BA and MA. Hefinished his studies as a National Science Foundation Fellow atStanford University, where he received an MS and PhD in theoreticalphysics.He held postdoctoral, visiting, and junior faculty appointments atseveral laboratories around the world before joining the faculty ofthe University of Virginia, where he eventually became universityprofessor and professor of physics. He has held several appointmentsas Visiting Scholar at the Department of Geophysical Sciences at theUniversity of Chicago. In 1987, he joined the faculty of George MasonUniversity as Clarence J. Robinson Professor of Physics.He has published more than 100 papers in professional journals andhas made contributions to research in elementary particle physics,fluid mechanics, medical physics (including cancer research), and theearth sciences.14GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY
