VacuFlush System ComponentsSeaLand recommends that theOEM label key sanitation systemcomponents: such as vacuumgenerators, wye valves anddirections, seacocks, etc.VacuFlush toilet systems are not difficult toinstall BUT certain steps are CRITICAL andmust be followed as described. These areasare highlighted throughout this guide in RED.1

VacuFlush Principles of Operation Uses pressure difference betweenatmosphere and vacuum in the tank. The vacuum pump is activated by theloss of vacuum in the vacuum tank. Vacuum is maintained at all times. The “leak-down” time period should beapproximately three hours. (Thepump should not come on within athree hour window of non-use.) Recharging vacuum takes less than aminute.2

Solvent Bonding For Rigid Pipe & Fittings1Cleaner2Cement3TwistThe most important steps:1.2.3.4.Use a PVC cleaner on both bonding surfaces.Use a PVC cement (must containTetraheyrofuran) on both bonding surfaces.Connect parts using a twist and hold motion untilthe glue is set.Let joint cure for at least four hours or perinstructions on the container. (Cold temperaturesrequire longer cure times.)11

Incoming Water SupplyThe incoming water line MUST Be cold water ONLY Be ½” (13mm) MINIMUM ID Provide a MINIMUM flow of 2gallons/min (7.6 liters/min) at thetoilet. This requires a 2.8 GPM(10.6 l/m) demand pump, orgreater depending on linerestrictions. Include a SHUT-OFF valve formaintenance purposesFresh water is highly recommended. If the choice is made to use salt orbrackish flush water, SeaLand requires the use of a primary and secondaryfilter. The secondary filter must be 100 mesh or less.Section I12

Keep Debris Out of the Toilet To prevent leaks, THE BALLSEAL MUST BE PROTECTEDFROM DEBRIS. Keep the toiletbowl covered. Lag bolts and/or T-bolts MUSTbe securely fastened in FOURlocations, or toilet wobble willresult. Should debris collect under theball seal, use the brush andcleaner samples to remove(provided with toilet).Leave thisprotective coverin place untilfinal delivery.Ball seal debris is THE MOSTCOMMON installationproblem!!13

Critical Guidelines – Toilet Installations1.Allow proper clearances from rear and side objects (bulkheads, partitions, etc).2.When installing a funnel, secure the funnel flat against the floorusing 8 fasteners.3.Fasten toilet securely to floor using 4 fasteners.4.When installing a funnel, the bottom of the toilet base and thebottom of the funnel flange must be mounted on the same surface.5.Follow proper solvent bonding procedure for rigid PVC on page 11when required.6.Assure minimum incoming water supply of 2 gallons per minute(7.6 liters/min) at the toilet.7.Keep debris out of the toilet bowl/funnel DURING INSTALLATION toavoid vacuum or water leakage through the ball seal.Section I14

Section II: Vacuum SourcesLow-Profile VacuumGeneratorVacuum Tank andPumpVacuum Generator15

Locating the Vacuum SourceEach toilet musthave a separatevacuum source(vacuumgenerator ortank/pump).A. Maximum height of vacuum piping from toilet outlet to vacuum source inlet is6 feet (1.8 meters).B. Maximum length of vacuum piping from toilet outlet to vacuum source inlet is30 feet (9.1 meters).Section II16

Supporting the Vacuum HoseThe inlet hose of the vacuumgenerator must not have a sideload (see picture below).Support the hose, as necessary.Do not let the hose gounsupported (up or down). Itwill pull the fitting out of theseal, creating a leak.X17

Vacuum Tanks Do’s & Don’ts The outlet of thevacuum tank must beat the lowest level. The vacuum switchmust be on the topwhen mountedvertically. Proper clearancemust be allowed foraccess to thevacuum switch.Section IINever tamperwith thevacuumswitch!Vacuum levelscan ONLY beadjusted atfactory!20

Accessibility is Critical!Do NOT do this!! Insufficientaccess. EASY access is needed to service Pumps Vacuum Switches Tank inlet and outlet fittings Vent Filters All pumps and tanks must have access toreplace if necessary.XVacuum Generator is located behind anappliance, difficult to access and entire unit cannot be replaced.21

VG Critical Access Areas23

Avoid locating pumps under sleeping areasXSection IIAvoid placing vacuum pumpsunder sleeping areas24

Critical Guidelines – Vacuum Sources1. Do not exceed the maximum length between toilet outlet and vacuumsource of 30 feet (9.1 meters) or the maximum height of 6 feet (1.8 meters).2. There must be a separate vacuum source (vacuum generator) for eachtoilet.3. Support the hose coming from the vacuum generator.4. Mount pumps horizontally.5. Vacuum tanks–Locate the outlet of the vacuum tank at the lowest level.–When mounted vertically, the vacuum switch must be at the top.–Never tamper with the vacuum switch settings.6. All fittings and connections, pumps, vacuum switches, tank inlet and outletfittings and vent filters must be readily accessible.7. Avoid locating vacuum pumps under berths.25

III. Hose and Piping LayoutProblems to be AvoidedCrushed, pinched, kinkedhoses found on newboats. This could be avoided byusing a quick turn funnel.Hose is routed improperly.Section IIIHose forced beyond bend radius, routed too tightly.26

Piping Runs to the Vacuum Source27

Hose Run SimplificationBEFORE One-head system with 40 gallon holdingtank Excessive hose runs Difficult to reach wye valve Discharge hose from holding tank alwaysfilled with sewageAFTER Now a two-head system with 40-gallonholding tank on same footprint. Createdby matching a SeaLand holding tank withrigid pipe fittings.Section III30

Avoid Heat SourcesDo not locate in or around hot waterheater relief valves (they may leak).31

Avoid Binding Corners & Sharp BendsEXCELLENTDo not restrict the ability to pull the hose or pipe.Do not use wire ties to secure the hose or pipe.Support flexible hose every 1 foot (0.3 m) and rigid pipe every 5 feet (1.5 m).Section III32

Do Not Risk Affecting Structural Integrity33

Making Hose ConnectionsHow To Use The SeaLand Hose Heater1. Insert hose into pre-heated hose heater for1.5 - 2.0 minutes. Do not leave the hose inthe hose heater for longer than 10 minutes, hose degradation will occur.2. Remove hose from heater. Using liquiddishwashing soap, quickly lubricate fittingand inside hose end, then push hose ontofitting. For second end, twist hosecounterclockwise before placing onto fitting. This will ease installation due to natural twist(helix) of the hose.Never use an open flameor overheat hose end!XSection III3. Allow hose to cool to room temperature, then clamp hose to fitting with twoclamps. Make sure clamp mechanismsare 180º from each other when tightened.34

Making Hose Connections (cont’d)WHEN DOING THIS USE ONLY THIS AND REMEMBER THIS LITHIUM-BASEDGREASE has led tosmall cracks inadapters due tochemical reaction withcertain PVCformulations.SILICONE-BASEDLUBRICANThas resulted inhoses slipping off ofadapters.RTV (ROOMTEMPERATUREVULCANIZING)SEALANT inhibitsability to servicesystem easily at alater time if needed.PVC CEMENTprevents ability toservice system easilyat a later time ifneeded.35

Making Hose Connections - TIPS All hose connections should be doubleclamped with screw mechanisms 180º apartand reversed. Use ONLY liquid soap and SeaLand hoseheaters as aids for installing sanitationhoses. Connect hose only to barbless fittings sized ata diameter of 1.53 .015” (39 .4mm).Clamps180apart Do not useundersizedfittings Do not useoversizedfittings Fully insert hose to the positive stop. Ifthere is no stop, minimum hose insertionis 1 1/8” (29mm)Section III T-bolt clamps willcause leaks at thehose connection36

Avoid Common Hose/Piping Problems inConventional LayoutsAcceptable material for rigid piping is PVC.Wye valves create odor permeation problems by trapping waste inunused hose runs.To avoid odor permeation problems, eliminate unnecessaryruns that can trap liquids.Use RIGID pipe for any locations of standing sewage.37
