Class Size Must have at least two Scouts No more that five Scouts Multiple groups of 3-4 Scouts seem towork wellWhat do we teach? 8 RequirementsField and office tasksFirst AidDiscussions with a Licensed SurveyorDifferent technologies used by SurveyorsBadge Requirements1) Show that you know first aid for the typesof injuries that could occur whilesurveying, including cuts, scratches,snakebite, insect stings, tick bites, heatand cold reactions, and dehydration.Explain to your counselor why a surveyorshould be able to identify the poisonousplants and poisonous animals that arefound in your area.6

Requirement #1 Don’t need to be an expert in First Aid Most Scouts already know these items This task can be accomplished by theScouts prior to you meeting with them Consult the Merit Badge Manual for allnecessary informationBadge Requirements2) Find and mark the corners of a five-sided lot that hasbeen laid out by your counselor to fit the land available.Set an instrument over each of the corners and recordthe angle turned between each line and the distancemeasured between each corner, as directed by yourcounselor. With the assistance of the counselor,compute the error of closure from the recorded notes.The error of closure must not be more than 5 feet.From the corners, take compass readings or turnangles to trees, shrubs, and rocks and measure tothem. All measurements should be made usinginstruments, methods, and accuracies consistent withcurrent technology.Requirement #2 One of the more time consuming requirements Groups of 2-4 Scouts with a Surveyor work well Need lots of guidance in the setup and use ofequipment To conserve time consider having Surveyors setup Equipment and have Scouts assist in theoperation Explain error of closure and do a simplecalculation7

Requirement #3 Need to explain how to draw to scale May need to explain the use of a scaleand a protractor Consider grouping scouts together for thisrequirementBadge Requirements4) Write a metes and bounds description forthe five-sided lot in requirement 2.Requirement #4 Type of description to use Depending on the age and ability of groupazimuths and bearing may be explainedand used For younger less experienced Scouts adescription written by angles anddistances will meet the requirement9

Badge Requirements5) Use one of the corner markers fromrequirement 2 as a benchmark with anassumed elevation of 100 feet. Badge Requirements6) Get a copy of the deed to your property,or a piece of property assigned by yourcounselor, from the local courthouse ortitle agency.Requirement #6 This requirement is best done by theScouts on their own before meeting withyou Deed can be obtained in person or via theinternet When you meet with the Scouts you candiscuss their experiences in obtaining thedeedBadge Requirements7) Tell what GPS is; discuss with yourcounselor the importance of GPS andhow it is changing the field of surveying.11

Requirement #7 Many of the Scouts have already usedGPS for navigation purposes Discuss how survey GPS is different andthe uses of GPS in the Surveying worldBadge Requirements8) Discuss the importance of surveying witha licensed surveyor. Also discuss thevarious types of surveying and mapping,and applications of surveying technologyto other fields. Discuss careeropportunities in surveying and relatedfields. Discuss qualifications andpreparation for such a career.Requirement #8 This is a good time to talk about the manyopportunities that surveyors have Discuss education needed to be asurveyor and what classes they can beginto take in high school Explain the different ways you can be alicensed surveyor in Wisconsin Share you personal experiences12

Past Experiences Two merit badge clinics were held thispast year in the Madison area– The first involved an individual troop, it washeld at the farm of one of the Scout’s parentsand 15 Scouts attended and received theirmerit badges– The second was part of a council merit badgeSaturday held at a local Scout camp, 14Scouts attended this sessionTips and Tricks Don’t expect the local Boy Scout office toplan your event for you Best to plan an event and then invite thescouts Arrange to be part of a larger event Interest has been high in both of ourprograms, the classes were filled tocapacityTips and Tricks Set out course to be Surveyed ahead oftime Have scout leaders or parents on hand toassist with larger groups Have plenty of equipment on hand, andbackups such as batteries Have a good mix of hands on andclassroom time13
