That is often a difficult, laboriousprocess in which the individual man,using his free will, has to test the newideas, and then must incorporate theminto his own mentality.Moreover, for some spiritual conceptions we simply lack the appropriatewords in our languages. If you live ina tropical country and have never seensnow, it would cost me a lot of effort toexplain to you what snow is. For thatreason, very often symbols were usedinstead of words.We find these symbols for instance incountless myths. But those myths didnot come directly from the Masters.Their followers gave the – in their viewhighly abstract – teachings a form, andwrote them down. Later generationsoften added all kinds of fantasies toit. Yes, sometimes they made up somany things, that the real messagewas totally lost sight of. It is generallyknown that a message may becomegreatly distorted when it passes orallyfrom man to man. In other words: theoriginal message is very often anthropomorphized. People are inclined totake only that part as true, that theycould understand themselves. In thisway, over time the knowledge shrinksaway. And finally other views are nottolerated any more.Yet if you brush the dust from thesemyths, you will discover a universalmessage. That is what H.P. Blavatskydid in her books. She showed that allthese myths and legends, all thesesymbols, are based on a universal system of ideas.QuestionBut why does the symbology of countries often differ greatly?30 Lucifer no. 1 January 2017AnswerThat is not the case. The greatest symbols are always universal, like the circle, the snake, the tree of life, et cetera.Differences only arise when peopleinterpret these symbols on the basisof their limited views.QuestionAre these differences not due to thefact that everyone understands thissymbology in a different way?AnswerTrue, but that is the responsibility of theperson who interprets these symbols, andnot of the person who gives the teaching. People start to wonder whatis behind that strange story, or behindthat glyph. In this way they discovercertain truths by themselves: truthswhich, when given directly, probablywould have been understood wronglyor partly wrong.We wish to add this: when truths areformulated in lofty language, peoplewill not understand them withoutexplanations. The Stanza’s from TheSecret Doctrine are very abstract ideasfor most of us. If you ‘translate’ thesetexts into more common language,you would impair them greatly. Thebest thing to do is to keep the original words, and – if you are able to – toadd comments. That is what madameBlavatsky did.QuestionWhy did the Masters need H.P.Blavatsky? Couldn’t they fulfill thetask themselves?AnswerThat is a good question. We think thatthey could have done it themselves,but that would have prevented themto do many other things that they arenow occupied with. They would havehad to commit themselves to a greatnumber of things which now were donevoluntarily by Mrs. Blavatsky.In The Mahatma Letters to A.P. Sinnettyou read that it sometimes requires greateffort for a Master to enter into a spherewhich is, compared to his own world,so coarse and polluted, that they onlydo that when necessary. They wouldtake upon themselves a great amountof karmic effects that would preventthem from doing other, even more loftywork. Compare this to someone whohad to become active in a criminal environment. That would also take a lotof effort, especially when you do notwant to become soiled by that sphere.Imagine that such a person had manyother tasks to fulfill for the well-beingof humanity. Then he could, if possible,send a somewhat less evolved humanbeing to that sphere to bring some lightand hope there.In short, the Masters would not beable to perform a lot of their duties ontheir own level, if they were obliged tobe directly involved in our world. Andremember: what they are doing in theirworld is much more important for usthan what they possibly could havedone if they would make direct contactwith us. This unseen work also greatlyenhances our spiritual well-being. Justas a king will not occupy himself withfor instance ploughing, because he dealswith things that concern all sectors ofthe country. Besides, a Master couldonly work in our world, if his authoritywould really be accepted.Fortunately, there are always unselfishpeople prepared to take on the task, andbecome a link between the Masters andthe world. And as long as mankind stillindulges in selfishness and materialism,
these links, these messengers, will beneeded. But as mankind develops spiritually, the contacts with the Masterswill become more direct. That hasalso been the case in the past. Look atancient Egypt or ancient China, andprobably this was also the case with native Americans, where god-kings wereaccepted by the masses. That refers toa period in which the Masters were thenatural leaders of nations. Their wisdom was recognized and accepted. Inour days that is no longer the case. Aslong as many people believe in nothingelse than physical matter, they will noteasily accept the authority of someonewho considers matter to be an illusion.And the Masters cannot, and do notwant to use violence or manipulationto force other people to accept theirauthority. So, what else can they dothan withdraw, and inspire and teachonly those individuals who are opento spiritual ideas? Because whereversomeone in the world practices compassion, then there the influence of theMasters is present.Master Koothoomi describes this beautifully. He says: compare our position toa mountaineer high on a mountaintop:one who has a permanent view over thevalley. He will notice each light. In thesame way, the Masters will notice theTathagāta light wherever it is — thatis what he calls the buddhic light ofself-sacrifice, of compassion, of love.(1)And, the Master adds, it is our law tofoster and kindle that Light, whoeverthe person who spreads it is: Christian,Muslim, Jew, Buddhist, Hindu, Humanist, it does not matter. Everywherewhere humans are willing to cooperateto benefit the whole, there is always acertain inspiration from the Order ofWisdom and Compassion.QuestionIs it right to worship the Masters as gods?AnswerQuestionNo, because they are not gods. Theyare men. Yet we think that they deserveall imaginable reverence, because theyare, at least in our perspective, almostdivine. But we do not revere them byworshiping sculptures of Masters. Neither do we direct prayers to them. Weprove our greatest respect for them byour deeds. We should follow the advicethey gave to humanity.The Masters are averse to all kinds ofhero worship. We do not think thatthey would appreciate it if people wouldhang garlands around photos, or thingslike that. If that would happen from afeeling of inner devotion, it would notbe wrong as such, if at the same time– and first and foremost – the laws,instructions, ideas and teachings ofthe Masters are practiced in daily life.Then it would not matter to them atall whether they would be worshipedor not.It is said that Masters and chelas are partof the guardian wall. Is that true? As amatter of fact, they often are victims.QuestionBut such worshiping does take placeon a large scale AnswerIt is a natural reaction of each humanbeing who has not fully learned to control his instincts. If you get to knowa great man, it is a natural reaction toworship him. For instance, if you readabout Mahātma Gandhi’s achievementsin India, then naturally you will admirehis work, as you realize that it is verynoble. So it is quite normal to have acertain respect for it. But the point isto try to incorporate that respect, thatdevotion in your own life. The bestway to honor Gandhi is by followinghis example of Ahimsa. So, never respond to evil with evil, and try to realize your ideals always in a non-violentway. That is the kind of worship thatwill eventually bear fruit.AnswerYou mean that sometimes they arekilled or persecuted?That has to do with the fact that manypeople are not easily willing to acceptother, broader ideas. In his famousallegory, Plato described that the people living in the cave, and holding theshadows on the cave wall for real, triedto kill the person who told them thatthey were looking at mere shadows.Yet, not all messengers, not all chelaswere persecuted or killed. Certainlynot. The Buddha lived eighty years— or according to the esoteric tradition even one hundred years. Otherteachers also taught their whole life,and reached old age.We think that each Master or chelaknows that compassion will connectyou to certain conditions, creatingconsequences that are not agreeable forthe personal consciousness. But if youlive in and from your spiritual nature,this personal suffering is a side-issue,as you are concerned with the totality. You are concerned with the greatorphan, as the Master calls humanity.The Masters, the chelas, yes, eachunselfish human being is part of theguardian wall, that symbolic wall thatprotects mankind.
