FALL 2014 NEWSLETTERIron Arrow Honor SocietyTHE HIGHEST HONOR ATTAINED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MIAMIA Message from the ChiefGreetings Tribe Members! On behalf of the officers and myself, welcome back to another action packed academic year atour beloved University! We hope your summer was filled with the happiest of memories, but thatyou are charged and ready for the upcoming semester. In this newsletter, you will find the “official”Fall 2014 schedule, the biography of our phenomenal Fall 2014 Tapping Luncheon speaker, andmany other noteworthy announcements. Be sure to check out the bios of our most recent Spring2014 Tap Class! As I ponder what is in store for our Tribe this upcoming year, I am reminded of one of myfavorite Iron Arrow takeaways: no matter how many accomplishments or accolades we achieve, ourwork as leaders is never done. This duty to lead does not end upon one’s admittance into IronArrow, but is a renewed commitment in our day-to-day lives as students, working professionals, and community activists. Thank you for continuing to represent the Tribe and University as modelexamples of true leadership, scholarship, character, humility, and love of alma mater. Because ofyour tenacity, commitment, and vision, we have proven our resilience and successfully advancedalongside our groundbreaking University. That being said, there is always room for more growth and I hope to continue steering us in theright direction. As a tribe, how can we continue our work as Iron Arrows? This year, I believe oneanswer to that question is to address what it means to BE an Iron Arrow. The first business meetingwill address our plans to better the tribe through a more objective and fair selections process.Ultimately, my goal for selections—one of the most unique and honorable traditions on our campus—is to reinforce the high standards I see represented in each and every one of you. I hopethroughout the upcoming year, you feel this theme of growth in all that we do. From expandingoutreach for outside recommendations to creating a comprehensive education process for newtapping classes, the officers and I promise to work tirelessly in order to propel us forward. In conclusion, I’d like to leave the Tribe with a challenge to continue our work as leaders, starting with the organization itself. Come to our events. Reach out to new members and share oldmemories. Expand the Iron Arrow community through nominating the best and the brightest.Uphold the standards of our five pillars in all that we do. And finally, have fun! We are the keepers oftradition at the University. That is a prettyserious, yet awesome job. As such, this year isgoing to be both highly entertaining andeffectively reformative. I look forward to seeingyou all throughout the upcoming semester(especially you out-of-towners!) and asalways, please email or call me if you have anyquestions or concerns.2014-2015 OFFICERSC. These two wordsperhaps sum up best what it means to know Norm.In May of 2010, after nearly 15 years as Iron Arrow Faculty Advisor, Norm “ended” his long tenure. You may wonderwhy that’s in quotation marks. The answer is simple. While Norm thought he retired from this post, and while he hasnot in title been our Faculty Advisor for the last 4 years, the truth is that we have not given him much choice otherthat to remain in an inextricable advisory capacity to the Tribe, which we jokingly call “Advisor Emeritus.” Norm hasremained busy as always with his position as executive director of the Patti and Allan Herbert Wellness Center andMiller School of Medicine Wellness Center, as well as the Student Affairs Development Officer, perhaps more so thanever before.Norm joined the University of Miami in 1972 and over four decades (43 years to be exact), has mentored scores ofIron Arrow Chiefs, Medicine Men, and Sons of Chief, and a perha
