PRELUDE(We stand and face the Baptismal font)CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESSPBlessed be the holy Trinity,† one God,the God of manna, the God of miracles, the God of mercy.CAmen.PDrawn to Christ and seeking God’s abundance, let us confess our sin.(Silence for reflection)PCGod, our provider, help us.It is hard to believe there is enough to share. We question your ways when they differ from the waysof the world in which we live.We turn to our own understandingrather than trusting in you.We take offense at your teachings and your ways.Turn us again to you.Where else can we turn?Share with us the words of eternal lifeand feed us for life in the world.Amen.PBeloved people of God:in Jesus, the manna from heaven, you are fed and nourished.By Jesus, the worker of miracles, there is always more than enough.Through Jesus, † the bread of life, you are shown God’s mercy:you are forgiven and loved into abundant life.Amen.C2

PRAYER OF THE DAYPThe Lord be with you.CAnd also with you.PLet us pray.Gracious God,your blessed Son came down from heavento be the true bread that gives life to the world.Give us this bread always, that he may live in us and we in him,and that, strengthened by this food,we may live as his body in the world, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.CAmen.(We sit)After every reading:THE WORDA: The Word of the Lord.C: Thanks be to God.FIRST LESSON: 1 Kings 19:4-8First Kings chapter 18 describes the contest between Elijah and the prophets of Baal. The contestproves that the Lord is God, and afterward Elijah orders the killing of the Baal prophets. Angeredby the deaths of her prophets, Queen Jezebel threatens to kill Elijah. This reading finds Elijahfleeing, fatigued, and in utter despair.4Elijah went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a solitary broomtree. He asked that he might die: “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am nobetter than my ancestors.”5Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Suddenly anangel touched him and said to him, “Get up and eat.” 6He looked, and there at his head was acake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. 7The angelof the Lord came a second time, touched him, and said, “Get up and eat, otherwise the journeywill be too much for you.” 8He got up, and ate and drank; then he went in the strength of thatfood forty days and forty nights to Horeb the mount of God.6

PSALMODY: Psalm 34:1-8sung by Luci HughesTaste and see that the Lord is good. (Ps. 34:8)1I will bless the Lord at all times;the praise of God shall ever be in my mouth.2I will glory in the Lord;let the lowly hear and rejoice.3Proclaim with me the greatness of the Lord;let us exalt God’s name together.4I sought the Lord, who answered meand delivered me from all my terrors. R5Look upon the Lord and be radiant, and let not your faces be ashamed.6I called in my affliction, and the Lord heard meand saved me from all my troubles.7The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear the Lordand de- livers them.8Taste and see that the Lord is good;happy are they who take ref- uge in God! R7

SECOND LESSON: Ephesians 4:25--5:2Christians are called to be imitators of God. This does not mean Christians are perfect. Rather, the Spirit is at work in our lives so that our actions and attitudes genuinely reflect the love andforgiveness we have received through Christ and his death.25So then, putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our neighbors, for we aremembers of one another. 26Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger,27and do not make room for the devil. 28Thieves must give up stealing; rather let them laborand work honestly with their own hands, so as to have something to share with the needy.29Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as there isneed, so that your words may give grace to those who hear. 30And do not grieve the HolySpirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption. 31Put awayfrom you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with allmalice, 32and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christhas forgiven you. 5:1Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, 2and live in love, asChrist loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.(We stand)GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Congregation singsBefore the reading:PThe Holy Gospel, according to Saint John, the sixth chapter.CGlory to you, O Lord.8

GOSPEL: John 6:35, 41-51After feeding more than five thousand people in the wilderness, Jesus teaches them regarding thetrue significance of this remarkable sign.35Jesus said to the crowd, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.41Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, “I am the bread that camedown from heaven.” 42They were saying, “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose fatherand mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven’?” 43Jesusanswered them, “Do not complain among yourselves. 44No one can come to me unless drawnby the Father who sent me; and I will raise that person up on the last day. 45It is written in theprophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Everyone who has heard and learned from theFather comes to me. 46Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God;he has seen the Father. 47Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. 48I am thebread of life. 49Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. 50This is thebread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. 51I am the livingbread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever; and thebread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”After the reading:P The Gospel of the Lord.C Praise to you, O Christ.(We sit)CHOIR ANTHEM, “O Taste and See” by Marty HaugenHOMILY(Silence for reflection)9

Ushers: Ushers are those persons in the congregation who are trained to welcomeand serve worshipers, provide them with needed materials (worship books, servicebooks, bulletins, etc.) and enable the liturgy to be celebrated without interruptionand disturbance. From Judaism, Christians inherited the custom of providing ushers to facilitateworship. In the Jerusalem Temple, ushers had the title “gatekeeper” or Keeper ofthe threshold” and were expected to make preparations for the daily sacrifices andto serve as guards. Eventually, they were given the title of “Temple Guard: andwere expected to function militarily (John 18). In the early Church, ushers wereknown as “porters.” They had the task of opening the church doors and ofprotecting the liturgy from desecrators and persecutors. When the persecutionsended in A.D. 313, their “policing” roles ended and ushers were able to give theirattention to the liturgical needs of the worshipers.Ushers tasks include: readying the narthex and nave for worshipers; greetingarriving worshipers; providing service books and bulletins; assisting those withphysical impairments; gathering and presenting the money offerings; recordingattendance; and making adjustments to lighting, ventilation and audio system.Chanting: Chanting is Latin for “to sing.” It is the recitation of a biblical orliturgical text according to a melodic formula in free rhythm. The Church mostlikely inherited chanting from the synagogue, where prayers and psalms had beensung by the people of God since ancient times.Coming from Judaism, the early Christians were familiar with chanting and desiredto preserve its use in the Church’s liturgy. To this tradition were added Greek andEastern musical styles, giving Christians a variety of musical resources. During thesixth century, an attempt was made to consolidate and coordinate all the Church’sliturgical music. The result came to be known as plainsong. Subsequent chantforms have been based on that sixth-century effort.Direct Recitation: Direct Recitation is the chanting or reading of a Psalm, orportion thereof, in unison.Collect: Collect is Latin for “to bring together.” It is a brief liturgical prayer ofpetition and it follows a distinctive form. Collects have been used in the Eucharisticliturgy since about the fourth century, and most continue to follow a classicstructure: address to God; desired result of the petition; conclusion; and “Amen”spoken or sung by the congregation.Elevation: Elevation is the lifting of the sacramental bread and chalice by thepresiding minister during the doxology at the conclusion of the Eucharistic prayer. The elevation is a gesture of praise to accompany words of praise to God for thegift of Christ’s real presence in the Eucharist.26
