201N3 Diabetes Foundation nowknown as the Lions Australia DiabetesFoundationMD (Multiple District 201) has adoptedthe policy of acknowledging thetraditional owners of the land whenconducting its meetings. Clubs andDistricts are free to consider their ownpolicy on this matter. The MD Insurance Committee isdeveloping a Risk Management andClub Safety Manual for release later inthe year.Distribution of the Lion Magazine, fromnext edition, will no longer be mailed tothe Lions’ member’s address.Apackage of magazines will be shipped tothe individual Clubs for distribution tomembers at club meetings.Currently, we receive the Lion Magazinethree times per year. As from 1 July2020 its frequency will reduce to biannually. This will mean that MD willneed to focus on other communicationmethods. The main method forcommunication with members will bethrough a monthly e-newsletter.Iencourage individual members tosubscribe to the e-newsletter via theLions Australia websiteA “licence-to-seek-funds” has beengranted to ‘Operation Smile’ (effective 1July 2020) and the ‘Follow Your DreamFoundation’.There are particular legal implicationsfor clubs operating programs for Under12 year olds such as the Cubs Program. The Legal Officer will provide advice toclubs under separate cover regardingthese implications.Following the review of the MDConvention Survey and analysis by theLong Range Development Committee, anumberofinitiativeswillbeimplemented to improve Conventionplanning and delivery. This includes:o Trialling a 3 ½ Convention inAdelaideo Providing an opportunity forlunchtime‘soapbox’presentationso Providing an extended uingThe Child Safe Policy will be reviewedwith a view to simplifying some of theprovisions with respect to YouthExchange. An amended Youth of the Year Manualhas been adopted.Zone Chairs will also communicate informationfrom the November Cabinet Meeting to Clubs attheir next Zone Meetings.Last month, Kevin and I travelled to Charlevillefor a DG club visit. On talking with members,we learned that Charleville will be celebrating in2020 the “1990 Floods - 30 Years On”. TheMurweh Shire is wanting to contact people whohad significant involvement with the evacuationand clean up during those floods and also anymemorabilia that people may have from then. Please contact Moniquemonique johnson@murweh.qld.gov.au.I know that a number of Lions from this Districttravelled to Charleville to assist with clean up.Wouldn’t it be great if we could organise a groupof Lions to travel out to Charleville when thecelebrations are on next year to support theCharleville Club – 19th to 25th April 2020.Drought and Bushfires Relief FundingMore than ever, we are being called on toraise/donate funds to support communitiesimpacted by the long drought and more recentlythe bushfires in New South Wales andQueensland. We are very grateful to the Q3Clubs who have been raising funds for thispurpose.Although Clubs are entitled todistribute those funds as they wish, whether itbe to our own Lions Foundations’ Appeals or thelocal Rural Fire Brigades or outsideorganisations, I do encourage you most stronglyto consider donating at least some of yourdrought monies to one or all of the followingappeals:(a)(b)(c)LCIF Disaster Relief FundALF Disaster Relief AppealQ3 District Drought ReliefAll donations, irrespective of which fund thecheque is made out to, are to be forwarded toDistrict Treasurer Arthur who will then bankthe monies into the respective accounts.Remember 100% of donations to LCIF and ALFgo into Grants to support Disaster Reliefprojects of Lions in their communities.Lions Clubs are not eligible for tax deductibilityas they do not pay income tax.But ifindividuals or businesses wish to support theLCIF or ALF Appeals, they are able to claim taxdeductibility.4“SHAPING OUR FUTURE TOGETHER – WE SERVE”

I realise not everyone has email addresses, butcan you please check to make sure as many ofyour officers as possible have their correctemail address recorded on my MyLCI.While we are talking about reporting, mythanks to the fifty-three clubs who got theirmembership report in by 26 November. Whatbetter way to spend Boxing Day this month? We are at the halfway point of this Lions year.It is a good time, wherever you sit in ourorganisation, to take a step and ask yourself In a few weeks, when we will have sold all thecakes, attended the last carols evening, openedour secret Santa presents and survived theshopping centres, Please take a fewmoments/days/weeks to rest, recharge andreconnect with those who mean the most to you.We hope you have a wonderful Christmas, andwish you health, happiness and laughter in2020.Debbie and Richard What have I achieved so far this year?(This about celebrating successes, notbeating yourself up about what youdidn’t get done?)In whose lives have you made adifference. What have you learned about yourselfthis year? What are you doing differently now? Then, after you have sung Auld Lang Syne andput the Christmas tree away, think about yourpriorities for the next six months. What isimportant, where can I get best impact, andwhat can I let go?This will be the last bulletin you receive aspart of a mail out to all clubs. I realise someclubs may print out a copy, but hopefullymany of you will read it online (you cansubscribe to Newsdirect, check the DistrictWebsite or ask your Secretary to forward thelink to all members. You can see the papersaving if we don’t print out a copy of thenewsletter in the photo.Happy Christmas allOne can never have enough socks," saidDumbledore. "Another Christmas has come andgone, and I didn't get a single pair. People willinsistongivingmebooks.”― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and theSorcerer's StoneThen the Grinch thought of something he hadn'tbefore! What if Christmas, he thought, s a little bit more!― Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch StoleChristmas! Each month, LCI produce for our district aclub health assessment, which showsmembership, membershipchanges, reporting history and other data. One of thefields shows the number of club officers whodo not have a valid email address. In thelatest report, sixty-six clubs have at least oneofficer without an email address.6“SHAPING OUR FUTURE TOGETHER – WE SERVE”

This Lions half year has flown and for my teampart the scheduled club visits have finished.Club visits are certainly the most rewardingaspect of this role. My wife Cheryl and I havemet many friendly, dedicated Lions from awide range of geographically diverse regionsand backgrounds. Apart from delivering our InternationalPresident’s and District Governor’s messagethe visits give us the opportunity to learnabout your club, your projects, activities andclub challenges. Irrespective of your club sizethe selfless serving generosity of our Lionsmembers is always apparent. Some of the visible Club challenges I observedduring these visits include: The ageing profile of most of our clubs. The challenge for us all is to find newmembers with that want or desire tomake a difference in this world andwithin our communities. The number of active Lions within ourclubs. As our age profile changes or isweighted towards the more mature endof the scale we have an increasingnumber of members needing to curtailtheir active roles within the clubs.Along with age we must remember theless active Lions whose years of serviceto the community, guidance andwisdom within the club helped ourclubs’ weather all past challenges andenhanced the reputation of our Lionsclubs.Lower member numbers often leadingto the same people standing for ClubOfficer leadership roles. In communities where populations aresmaller, membership is an ongoingchallenge. This leads to an increasedworkload on the remaining members.I would like to see neighbouring clubsshare more service activities. It is notonly an opportunity to bolster numbersbut to meet new friends in Lions. Iencourage our newer members to injectnew ideas into clubs and take on moreleadership roles. Share the workloadwithin clubs. The need to put social activities and funback into the calendar versus clubreoccurring project demands. Duringmy visits it is refreshing to meet clubswho have placed social activities andfun high on their program. It is throughhealthy social activities we develop morefriendly cohesive teams. To find members prepared to log theirmember’s hours of service using newertechnologies.MyLion has been anenormous challenge to some but it isnecessary to log our Lions service hours. These hours have a District and Globalsignificance within our organization andour Lions organizational profile inseeking project partnerships. To take advantage of the opportunity tovisit other clubs and expand ourknowledge of neighbouring clubs.Widen your knowledge of other Clubs, meeting formats, projects and above allmeet new Lions friends. To embrace the opportunity to share inprojects involving clubs other than yourown.Lastly, succession planning withinclubs and major projects. We alwaystalk about succession planning, but dowe introduce measures to address this?Too often large projects are left to a fewleaving the intimate project knowledgeinside a few heads and not on paper orin procedural documents. These comments are more observational thansolution based.7“SHAPING OUR FUTURE TOGETHER – WE SERVE”

I encourage all our Lions members to sharenew ideas or revisit ideas of the past thatworked, in addressing some of theseobservations. In reading the latest November 2019 editionof Readers Digest in an article titled ‘How toMaintain a Purpose in Life’ David G Allen, Iwould like to highlight a few inspirationalquotations. Leo Tolstoy “The sole meaning of life isto serve humanity” Albert Einstein “Only a life lived forothers is a life worthwhile” Nelson Henderson (Rugby player) “Thetrue meaning of life is to plant treesunder whose shade you do not expectto sit”MOONLIGHTINGLastly on behalf of Cheryl and I, thank youfor your friendliness and support this year.We wish you and your clubs and families avery merry Christmas and all the very bestfor the new year ahead.Yours in Lionism,David.Caught “Moonlighting at the Q1 Convention” JohnBroad won a prize for his Halloween outfit.
